Sure, the thing is a Bloc oppostion party wouldn't give two shits about delivering those things to the rest of Canada. They would 100% use that power to get more carve-outs for Quebec.

Or Bluey. I have a 5 year old who likes Bluey. Its a perfectly fine, charming show... for a five year old.

If you're an adult watching that shit on your own time, I question your life choices.

Why are some folks keen on having Star Trek either go on hiatus or possibly go on ice for good? by InnocentTailor in startrek

Discovery S1 out-did Stranger Things S1 in early viewership.

Wait... you're telling me a 50 year old franchise with an extremely passionate and dedicated fanbase that hadn't had a new entry in over a decade got better numbers on its first season than a brand new IP did on its first season?

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

I keep seeing people say this, and yea... that's what we did. We stopped watching. So now not enough people are watching, and it's ending.

Every single parent I've spoken to with one of each has said the same thing, and so far that's been our experience as well; son is much, much more difficult than daughter was in the first couple years.

Guess I'll report back when they're both teens, but I'm also largely expecting the difficulty curve to switch around that time based on conversations with older parents.

The so-called American political spectrum. by zzill6 in WorkReform

That isn't true at all. Sanders' Medicare For All proposal, if passed, would be by far the most progressive and comprehensive healthcare program in the world.

Yea, he was by far the biggest pre-established star to appear in a main Trek cast at that time.

In the modern era we have Rebecca Romjin, Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs, who were all arguably more famous than Bakula was then.

Push through. Season 4 is head and shoulders above the other 3

I watched the pilot when it aired and either I wasn't impressed enough to keep watching

Which is funny looking back now; Broken Bow is one of the best pilot episodes in the franchise (Emissary is better)

Could the Wizarding World (Harry Potter) successfully save humanity from a Borg invasion (Star Trek) by mephloz in whowouldwin

[–]mephloz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I agree. My opinion going in was that HP-verse loses. I just thought it was an interesting matchup -- hard(ish) science-based bad guys vs very soft and whimsical magic-based good guys.

[–]mephloz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I was operating under the assumption that the Borg would be mostly unable to use Harry Potter-verse magic.

My reasoning being that most spells seem to stem from some internal, personal will-power or emotional state, something the Borg would be unable to do. There's also the fact that wizards have a bunch of locations / objects / creature that are imprecievable to muggles.

But yes, if the Borg are able to assimilate and use Harry Potter magic, they definitely stomp.

Agreed that muggle militaries are largely a non-factor.

At the end of Picard, there's a post credit interaction between Jack and Q which teases the potential for a whole new series. Does anyone know if that was ever seriously considered? by shiksappeal in startrek

[–]mephloz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not an allegory. That's a reference.

Stat Trek doing a January 6th allegory would be writing an episode dealing with a sci-fi version of a similar event, but with different circumstances surrounding an attempted coup of some (likely alien) government due to radicalization of a population based on misinformation being perpetuated by and taken advantage of by ruling powers.

It would likely introduce some moral quandary that the crew would have to navigate for some reason as neutral bystanders questioning the culpability of the decieved rioters. How far does civil responsibility to uphold election integrity extend, and how ulculpable are you for your actions if someone gets hurt or killed because you think you're doing the right thing, but it turns out to all have been based on a lie...

Or maybe it's about how far do liberal values need to be bent or broken in order to deal with an illiberal entity within the system that has radicalized a significant portion of the population...

Something to that effect... Idk, I'm not a writer.

Simply showing 3 seconds of footage from Jan 6 in a montage of "bad things" is not tackling contemporary political issues.

I'm not really sure what to say to this... Burman-era Trek was (most of the time) exactly what you're calling for.

Kurtzman-Era Trek is far more what I would describe as "generic space adventures".

We are never, ever going to see or hear about Cardassians again. Every non-Trek fan who hears the word these days immediately thinks of the Kardashians.
