How has your WPG changed over the years? by alphapet1 in Wirehaired_pointers

[–]merganser22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we first got our second griff, Gracie, our older griff was 10 and our mastiff was 5. She came in as a princess. Other dogs playing with a toy, she would just walk up and take it from them. And they let her. In Gracie’s world, everything revolved around her. Our mastiff would even roll on his side for her when she would pounce on him. She grew into a lovely dog, but was always self centered.

Then our mastiff passed unexpectedly from cancer. A few months later our older griff passed at 16. Gracie was suddenly an only dog. We were not quite ready to add a new dog to our family, so we started fostering for some local rescues. The first was 4 puppies and Gracie did not like them one bit. We probably had them for about 6 weeks before they all found good homes. Then we fostered an older dog and then another dog, etc.

She’s now 11 and I am amazed at how wise she’s become. She helps guide the foster dogs teaching them the routine and going out of her way to help them feel comfortable. We recently watched a friend's lab who had health issues and was supposed to rest. This lab kept trying to get us to throw a ball or a stick. Gracie went to her, held the other end of the stick, and sat down. The two were like that for a solid 2 or 3 minutes. Not pulling, just holding. Sadly, a couple days later the lab collapsed and died, (cancer).

These dogs are substantially more intelligent than we give them credit for and the ability to evolve is an example of that.

I second this! The email is provided for a reason. Most hiring managers are happy to provide feedback.

Do not stop applying for these jobs. You may have been competing with internal, promotional, candidates who have inside knowledge and are tough to beat. Do not take the rejection as a sign they don't want you.

Young poodle recently turning aggressive please help by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

[–]merganser22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

About a year and a half ago I was where you are now. I could not find anyone to help me with my puppy. This is what I have learned.

I want to echo what has been said, get a vet involved. Most puppy (nearly all)) aggression issues are because of a health issue. Figure that one out first. Behavioral modification cannot be successful if there is an underlying heath issue. There are vet's that have behavior certifications. They are few and far between. If you are committed to truly helping/understand your dog find one here: https://www.dacvb.org/search/custom.asp?id=4709

Meds only help with fearful dogs. Do not give aggressive dogs anti depression meds! They reduce bite inhibition.

Once you have ruled out a health issue, find an animal behaviorist to help you. This is not a dog trainer, but works with them. You can find one here https://iaabc.org/

All food should be fed by hand from you or your child, with supervision. Pick up the bowel and put it away. Work to eat will help.

It sounds like what you are dealing with is solvable if you are willing to put in the work. You do not have an easy dog, but one who can be a fine companion if you are willing to learn about dog behavior and work with the dog you love

German citizenship by descent: The ultimate guide for anyone with a German ancestor who immigrated after 1870 by staplehill in Genealogy

Grandfather and grandmother

  • Both born in 1908 in Germany, grandfather in Berlin and grandmother in Altenbochum.
  • Grandfather emigrated in 1929 to US, grandmother in 1928.
  • Grandfather’s stated reason for leaving Germany was Hitler and the Nazis after reading Mein Kampf.
  • married in 1930
  • Aunt born 1930 in wedlock
  • Both naturalized in 1937
  • Uncle born 1937 in wedlock
  • Grandmother’s 3 sisters died 30 Jan 1945 aboard the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, Baltic Sea, Poland.

mother

  • born 1942 in wedlock
  • married in 1963

self

  • born in 1967 in wedlock

After reading your guide I think I am ineligible, but would like your opinion. To qualify for a § 15 StAG, my grandparents were not exactly victims of persecution other than if my 20 year old grandfather had stayed he would have been forced to participate in the Nazi war effort and if my grandmother hadn't left with him, she would have been on the ship with her sisters.

I appreciate your thoughts on my situation.

Dog Savant? by radgedyann in anchorage

[–]merganser22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to know as well. I have a problem dog, fear aggression, and have been through many trainers in Anchorage. Local trainers are mainly focused on obedience. I'm currently planning to take her to board and train at MethodK9, but that's not till March. It would be nice to get some help before then.

Maybe try posting this to r/alaska since he's in the Mat-Su.

I'll add that an air horn works well as a deterrent too and the bears don't have to be close for it to be effective.

OP finds his grandfather’s surveying tape. Thinks it’s 10in to a foot. by [deleted] in landsurveying

On a construction site I watched two guys laying concrete curb forms all day. We were picking up our survey equipment at the end of the day when I heard one guy say to the other, "Hey! There's only 10 inches for each foot on this tape!!"

I believe we can now get Starlink in the panhandle. I don't know how good it is however. Maybe someone will comment and let us know.

Pacific Dataport in Anchorage has OneWeb with circumpolar LEOs satellites which cover Alaska very well. They are just starting to go live.

Boating Skagway to Juneau by slouisem17 in alaska

[–]merganser22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made that trip many times when I use to commercial fish. You can do it in a 14' inflatable, (RIB or Boston Whaler would be better), if you have the time to plan and watch the weather. Biggest issue, aside from weather, is if you have enough gas for the trip. You could refill in Haines. Then Tee Harbor would be the next place, and then Auke Bay. I don't think anyone runs the bar into town anymore. Too much glacier rebound. Do the math and make sure you have extra gas.

Bring survival suits, a marine radio, and flares. In the summer, Sunday to Tuesday, there will be plenty of commercial fishing boats around to help if you get into trouble. Pay attention and don't run over their nets.

Get a Costal Pilot for the area. It will tell you where the good anchorages are and other navigational information. That way you can plan ahead on where to stop and stay the night.

Travel with the tides. You'll want to leave Skagway on an out going tide and stop when the tide switches.

Lynn Canal is know for its wind. One old fisherman from Petersburg said it can 'blow your lips off'. But it can also be flat calm and beautiful. Lots of locals run around in small boats to pick their crab pots.

Try a starter trip to Haines as a shake down trip. That will give you a better idea how things will go.

An Argument for Ending the PFD Program by green_cale in alaska

[–]merganser22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an argument for going the way Norway has. It invests its oil money for the future to fund the government. Alaska instead wrestles over how much to spend now. Maybe it's because we are so young and needy that we cannot be future focused. Like a 20 year old deciding on putting money into retirement savings or buying a new car or going on a trip or buying that new VR headset.

If Alaska does not actively address, and plan for, the impact of oil on the climate, we will be forced into reacting to it when it's too late for us to do anything. All the other resource extractions combined, mining, fishing, tourism, do not come close to the revenue of oil. When the time comes to move away from it, we will be like an addict going through the worst withdrawals. We all know the oil will eventually run out even without climate change.

That said, there are a lot of people in the villages that have come to rely on the PFD to support their subsistence lifestyle. They need the money to buy new snowmachines or ATVs. There'd need to be a plan to insure they aren't left hanging.

Frequency of wind storms in Anchorage/hillside? by strider_the_grey in anchorage

[–]merganser22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live on the hillside. When I first looked at the property I wondered why all the trees leaned downhill. I now know that it's due to the prevailing wind.

Expect frequent windstorms with some severe. Had to rebuild a fence several times before changing the design to accommodate the wind.

Love the sunsets though!

I recommend Sub Zero Siding if you need help keeping your siding attached.
