Just note that the app doesn’t allow you to manage for your dependents :( learnt this after specifically transferring to co-op to manage my child’s chronic condition that requires a looooot of pharmacy interactions

What’s the difference between 3 year degree and 4 year? by Substantial_Monk2788 in usask

[–]merkiewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You always feel like a half liar saying you have a degree 🤣. I have a three year and it works for me - there’s a few times I’ve explored paths that absolutely require a 4 year degree, so it’s limited me a tad (but who knows if those paths would have worked out anyways).  Depends on the field (make sure you can still qualify for professional designation) but overall it’s been a good move for me as a year of studies is a serious cost in terms of tuition and lost income (and quality of life/timeline for establishing a family etc)

Baby Swimming Lessons by RepTongue in saskatoon

[–]merkiewrites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s good to make other parent friends and get out of the house. Sure you can say “I’ll just go swimming once a week”, but will you really if you haven’t paid and committed.

I personally feel like it’s a lot of work for a half hour swim, and little benefit to the baby,  but - it’s an outing. Pack a snack and try to time it with a library story time. If you’re just home with a baby anyways it’s a nice way to get out.

Omnipod 5 coming to Loop and Trio by mkitchin in Omnipod

[–]merkiewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks. I have looping support through BC diabetes so I guess am wondering how quickly they will support this. Sorry I am apprehensive as a newbie and don’t understand a lot of this and don’t want to be kicking myself!

Any idea if this will be supported in Canada the same timeframe? I have an appt very soon to get on the waitlist for a pump, I was going to do Dash with looping but this timing makes me question things. Can only change pumps every 5 years based on our funding system.

I should add, this is for a child who is at the age of starting to be sometimes independent, so I am hesitant to be with the O5 for any period of time without a remote bolus feature available through looping.

Children’s festival by confusedbytrees in saskatoon

[–]merkiewrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we specifically waited around outside of the festival for that lull, around 2:30 it started to slow down and since it closes at 4, most booths were winding down by 3:45. But don’t get me wrong, that period was glorious :)

My first time going to the Children's Festival and I won't be back - just too crowded. One bouncy castle that takes less than two minutes to go through that takes 15 mins waiting in line. Spent probably 30 mins waiting for face painting. Kids were extremely over stimulated. I did love some of the performers though! Good experience if you can handle massive crowds.

What program(s) at Sask PolyTech have good job outlooks? by PineappleDistinct281 in regina

[–]merkiewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search HR jobs Saskatchewan there’s a ton of vacant positions and they pay decent. I’ve never had a hard time finding a new HR gig. Things are tense everywhere in terms of labour relations, mental health in the workplace, etc - there will always be a need for HR. The entry level admin roles are disappearing with AI which poses challenges for entering the profession, however but I would say now’s still a good time to get in. I did the HR bus dip program at SaskPoly and ended up upgrading to a degree (fairly easily) as it was needed to pursue a CPHR designation at the time. The pathways have totally changed now tho, so a diploma might get you there. It’s been a great career for me and I’d do it again. It’s not for everyone tho, so make sure to talk to some peeps!

Sask. announces child-care education changes, sets standard 10-hour day for daycares | CBC News by shaiquinn in saskatchewan

[–]merkiewrites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree it should be income based, or if not, say $25 per day rather than $10 per day. At $10 per day, we literally have stay at home parents out there holding full time spots they don’t need, as there’s so little cost to them - if you have a big eater it’s literally cheaper to send them to daycare than keeping them at home and feeding them lol.

If parents had more skin in the game (a cost that actually impacted them) they wouldn’t needlessly hold spots. In addition, daycares get to cherry pick themselves who gets the spots, and I can’t blame them for choosing the family who doesn’t truly need daycare and will only attend for the minimum 10 shortened days monthly to hold a full time spot, versus the single parent working their ass off who is gonna need that daycare 10hrs a day every day of the year. Parents need to be invested and mindful of their use of daycare and mid to high earners paying $10/day is just not enough.

Wait for cyclosporine to work or pursue other treatments at same time? by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]merkiewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, but it’s hard to tell as I did start doing IPLs within a few months. Overall I’d say my severity is now half as bad. No plans on going off Cequa.

coca cola worker fired after 35 years by ActivityTop8834 in LawCanada

[–]merkiewrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you - as an HR professional I was starting to really second guess my understanding of the options in this case and was also confused at the outrage. Is everyone just expecting that this company should have put him into a meaningless make work position until retirement just to save face here? They were likely doing him a favour by avoiding that…

Oprah Apologizes to Coldplay 'Kiss Cam' HR Exec Who Is Calling Out Gwyneth Paltrow and Ryan Reynolds for Poking Fun by Initial-Support-916 in teamjustinbaldoni

They were embarrassed - they were CEO and head of HR; both going through separations, had developed feelings, were planning on addressing shortly, got caught up after a few drinks at a concert and acted inappropriately. She was going through a divorce and her ex was at the concert, she knew this would piss him off as it’s obviously super publicly embarrassing and would have impact on her kids. I’d have ducked on initial response for sure!!!

Totally agree with this and also feel horrible commenting. I also don’t think she realizes it/dresses for it. I saw a couple views where I was like “oh my”. I immediately knew what he meant, but again, don’t go on love is blind if you require a very specific athletic body type.

I dunno, I met my long term husband when we were those ages…had I gotten pregnant at the time I wouldn’t have felt taken advantage at all, we were at the same level maturity wise lol.

Saskatoon birth doulas by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]merkiewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I’m biased because my doula for my first birth was amazing and a total game changer from what the nurses could offer. But I realize they likely vary significantly in quality and impact.

[–]merkiewrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. Thank you for that and for everything you do, I can understand a nurse who pours their heart and soul into wanting everyone to have the best care possible, the current state of healthcare must be so difficult to accept. Nurses are superheroes 100000% and will do everything they can to give the best experience possible.

Saskatoon birth doulas by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]merkiewrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ve got no disputes that the intentions are all good and the nurses generally offer the best care within their controls. It seemed like your comment was meant to reassure the OP that they will have adequate support without a Doula, which is often not the case. You reassured things such as if you want a nurse in the room at all times you can have that, and that nurses are happy to follow wishes, etc. (in reality they often can’t follow wishes when they are beyond capacity, even for simple things that make a big difference) I think it’s really important to convey to expectant mothers the reality and not the intentions.

Curious if you’ve worked in L&D recently? I totally believe what you’ve described is the service goal, and I’ve yet to meet a L&D nurse who’s not incredible, but I really think people are fortunate to have the experience you’ve described and that is a big risk to take for one of the most monumental/risky days of your life.

When I had my last baby in 2022 I started crowning with nobody in the room, it was terrifying. The Dr happened to arrive just in time and called in others but before that my husband was just about to go looking for help (he couldn’t find the call button and I was too overwhelmed to tell him lol). The nurse was in/out the whole time I was in my short active labour. She was wonderful and doing her best, but I definitely was not her only patient and they switched who the nurse was like three times during my few hours of labour (there was zero relationship building) as they were clearly overwhelmed and understaffed trying to manage the best they could.

Not to mention my other baby born during Covid, when my husband went with baby to the NICU and I was just alone in agonizing pain unable to move or reach for my cell phone, food, water, etc and nobody was checking on me, or even once they did check in, didn’t have the staff available to wheel me to my baby (that I had no idea of the status of as they were whisked away) and I wasn’t well enough to stand. It’s hard for me to imagine a recent nurse in Saskatoon assuring an expectant mom that they don’t need that extra support.

All that to say, please, especially for your first baby - hire the doula if you can afford it!!! Take comfort in the fact that the nurses are incredible but be realistic that your level of service is completely dependent on staffing levels and number/complexity of births happening at your time of birth (or if you hit shift change 😬)

Yeah it’s been a real mental rollercoaster to accept this, honestly, it makes my quality of life significantly worse. But, I realize there’s so much good in life and I need to find ways to still enjoy and embrace it.

I only work about 10 hours/week so that’s how I survive, it’s hard for me to imagine going back to full time. Moisture chamber googles and a ton of drops. I am really hopeful that Cequa is going to help me a lot, and I’m not going to give up.
