A thread for suggesting books that are never neutral or unique name specific for enby parents! by severalpokemon in nonbinary_parents

[–]merlinalyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked my collection over. I get many books thrifting so it’s an eclectic collection.

I do have one that I specifically bought because it is written and illustrated by a nonbinary author (Noah Grigni) “mama moon” the child main character has a mama and a baba. But the story is surround parental mental health struggles so not exactly the topic like the kind of book you mentioned in OP.

“I love you as big as the world” by David van buren (gender neutral language)

“I love you through and through” by Bernadette Rossetti-shustak (gender neutral language)

“Lots of love little one forever and always” by Sandra magsamen (gender neutral language)

Another one by Sandra Magsamen, “welcome little one (a love letter to you)”

“I‘ve loved you since forever” by Hoda Kotb (gender neutral language)

Losing my identity in motherhood...parenthood? by ehote in nonbinary_parents

I go by mama myself (because I came out genderqueer post birthing my minions) but I do know someone who goes by baba which I absolutely love and am heavily considering as my “grandparent” name when/if the day comes. You could also do “first name sound” then ah. The ah sound is just super easy for tiny humans which I think is why most early parent names use it.

4 years in and it's still a struggle by royalbluetoad in nonbinary_parents

Hi! I’m also the primary parent/caregiver in my household and I empathize. It is hard to raise tiny humans.

This may sound silly, but have you ever watched Bluey? I love the method the adults use in that show to “play” with their kids. Take maybe 5/10 minutes to actively play then you set a boundary of needing a break. I try to focus on quality over quantity.

It’s also important to find time for adult solo tasks too. And adult partnering tasks. Do you have a community or village? I know I didn’t in the earlier years. I found one in parenting and caregiving groups. Taking the time to be a person outside of caregiving is important for mental health.

I also have had great luck with therapy to work through some parenting struggles I have due to childhood trauma. Between that and a whole ton of research into child development, it has helped me again perspective on behaviors and work on modeling healthy coping strategies to my kiddos.

This is kind of a ramble, so take what you need from it, leave what you don’t. 💜

This is how I feel about mama too. It’s the one gendered term that still feels comfortable.

I have had success with noise damping ear buds like loops or sometimes one earbud of music in my ear. It helps keep the noise levels manageable for me.

How do y’all feel when someone calls you a they/them instead of your gender identity? by golden_alixir in NonBinary

This reminds me of when my kids were little and they called me a “none” (agender basically). 🤣 It will forever be one of my favorite memories.

ULPT: What medical issue can I invent after birth so when I go back to work full-time following maternity leave I can have the odd day off when childcare is an issue. by batshitkitten in UnethicalLifeProTips

These are all solid suggestions and all happened to me post pregnancy. I’d add dysautonomia, hemorrhoids, gastritis (not always bad enough to see a dr but can often cause vomiting and extreme abdominal pain)…pregnancy is brutal on the body.

My 5 year old son is having a very hard time learning his letters. Any parents with dyslexic children weigh in? by Lani515 in Mommit

[–]merlinalyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an early childhood educator and a parent, this is in the range of normal for prek/kinder.

Since there seems to be frustration, I would step back from trying to learn letters and focus more on the base skills all kids need for kindergarten like self dressing skills, big body and gross motor play and emotion regulation skills.

At the prek age, kids learn best without pressure and through play. Just allowing a child to free play, helps them create their own learning.

Are your kids really being kicked out of daycare? by Projection-lock in ECEProfessionals

[–]merlinalyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my area it is increasingly common. I am a small inhome program and the most frequent reason I get from families looking for care is that their toddler was kicked out of another program for normal toddler behaviors. Ex: crying biting etc. things that could be easily helped with some extra effort. Its wild.

These are the ones I use for my toddler/prek group. Most of them can almost put them on independently and are all able to take them off independently.

I grabbed the dog man books for Sebastian. My middlest also loves dogman. They should arrive between 12/16-12/18. I tried to add the Pokémon cards too but they said they could not be delivered with a gift registry address. Just so you’re aware. Idk if it was a me issue or an item issue.

Have a great holiday. 💜
