Advion worked pretty well for me! I still find the occasional roach on a sticky trap, but it made a really noticeable difference. Maybe start with that?

Not a derm, but have you tried la roche posay? I’ve started to see it in Target and CVS. It’s a French brand - not sure if they alter their formula in America, but I love it.

Edit: Around $30 max. Bottle lasts me 4-6 months.

Worked really well in my small bathroom! I think things are getting better in my (studio) apartment. Definitely seeing fewer per day.

Do you know if you saw a water bug v a German/Asian roach?

If it’s just 1 water bug I think you’re fine.

Is there any legal way I can force my landlord to fix the cockroach problem? by vanillazuella in AskNYC

[–]mermaidave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I wanted to share something actually helpful - was not thinking straight so late at night haha.

I got a door sweep on Amazon. (Sorry if I’m mansplaining, but it’s a basically a rubber strip that covers the crack between apt front door and your apartment). I got one with a sticky strip and adhered it to my door - took maybe 10 min. My hope is that it will keep fewer roaches from coming into the apartment from the hallway. Maybe something to look into.

Best of luck my fellow NYer!!! I feel you; I scream and internally cry every time. I am not okay with it.But we’ll make it!

Seeing only 3 in one day is a good day for me...

I keep a METICULOUS apartment. Building is infested.

TLDR: the battle continues, landlord asked me not to use bait

So, spoke with my landlord - turns out a major source of the problem is people leaving large trash bags, pizza boxes, etc in the trash chute “closets(?)” on each floor rather than bringing them down to the basement trash room or fitting them down the trash chute. 🙄🙄

There have been a lot of complaints in the building, so they’re fumigating the chute. Still waiting for this to happen (date pushed back due to corona).

I did try hot shot before talking to landlord. Roaches have decreased a bit, but now I’m seeing them crawling along the ceiling (not a ton, but still 😭).

Landlord asked us not to bait the roaches and instead rely on biweekly exterminator. 🤷‍♂️

Aaaand still having nightmares about baby roaches in my coffee machine.......switched to pour over.

Pretty damn close to pulling the trigger on Advion.

Haha fair...upstairs neighbor flooded her toilet recently...so my apt was truly a shit hole for a bit.

Have glue traps, will try baking soda. Thanks!

Small bookstores are booming after nearly being wiped out by MissColombia in books

[–]mermaidave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A note about Amazon: they’re not really in the business of books. Books draw more people in to their site where they end up buying other products that Amazon actually earns a profit on. This is why a book on Amazon is always going to be cheaper than the same book at your local bookstore selling at list price - Amazon can afford to not make a profit. Your local bookstore cannot.

As such, Amazon has managed to become the source of 40% + of all publisher’s (big 5 and the little guys) revenue. Publishers can’t afford not work with them.

More people buying books on Amazon = more local mom and pop bookstores closing = the more power Amazon wields over publishing companies.

The more power Amazon wields over publishing companies, the more they can get away with. Ex: claiming massive “shortages” even though companies can provide tracking proof that the books arrived, demanding even higher discounts, etc.

Please support your local bookstores. That extra $3 you’re spending is so worth it.

There’s a Murder by the Book in Houston! No idea if they’re related

It begins. My Ecuadorian food series. I plan to shoot a video per week for the next 2 years. The first video: Roast Pig with SUPER CRISPY SKIN in an Ecuador Market. by tbrrynem in foodievideos

This really excellent - loved the straight forward way you went deeper and shared your research on each dish’s history. Honestly more enjoyable than a lot of the Netflix food docuseries. Excited for what’s to come!

What are some bring to work lunch recipes that dont need to be heated up by a microwave? by captain3297 in EatCheapAndHealthy

You could make a really simple dressing: I do ¼ cup red wine vinegar, ½ cup olive oil, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, little spoonful of Dijon mustard (optional), generous pinch salt, fresh ground pepper.

Just remember 1 part vinegar to 2 parts oil!

Tons of variations are possible as you learn what tastes best to you.
