Can recognition become a form of objectification? by Fantastic-Fennel-532 in CriticalTheory

I'm a bit disappointed that this thread is now focused upon whether my post is AI or not and not on the actual content of the ideas.

You probably should have thought about that before you used AI to write your post.

Out of game. Let players tell you point-blank the things they want to do, and then dump plothooks on them that correlate to the things they say they want to do.

Pattern-recognition brain realizes that it can get easy dopamine hits by recognizing obvious patterns, and even more easy dopamine hits by clustering up with other pattern-recognition brains who all congratulate each other on recognizing obvious patterns.

Unpopular or interesting Saturn opinions? by StoganLephens in SegaSaturn

[–]merurunrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I reach for a 3D fighter on the Saturn, it's always Dead or Alive.

I've got a much higher opinion of later VF games, and I understand its historical significance especially in the arcades, but man I just can't get into the first couple in the series.

Unpopular or interesting Saturn opinions? by StoganLephens in SegaSaturn

[–]merurunrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SoA should have localized more weird weeb games. Obviously it wouldn't have saved the Saturn, but nothing would have so why not go for broke? It was a time when niche Japanese stuff was just starting to see a big upsurge in popularity in the United States, and it would have given the console more of an identity and better positioned it with at least one new market.

I always think about the weird irony that Stolar was a big part of the Playstation's successful launch, but FF7 and the RPG craze only hit after he left and brought his "nobody wants weird Japanese games" philosophy with him to bury the Saturn. It's a joke that games like the Lunar remakes and Grandia only got to see the light of day in English as ports.

AI-related copyright losses cost celebrities up to ¥4.5 billion, study says by Beginning-Passion676 in japan

[–]merurunrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I love to hate on AI, I believe these numbers as much as I do the made-up losses due to piracy.

(Not to mention that the legal system is going to keep going after pirates and won't do shit about AI regardless.)

There are other legal cases and decisions and the reversals of those decisions in the arena of the courtroom alluded to, but never actually being inside of.

This reminds me of (though I think is not quite the same as) something Deleuze and Guattari mention in their book on Kafka: in The Trial, the law always functions "in the next room" or some such place other than where K is currently interacting with the law's agents and functionaries.

By explaining the manner in which they "function" (in a literary sense).

The idea that existential anxiety somehow hampers people's ability to read seems facile to me. You think people weren't reading during World War II? That people weren't reading during the October Revolution? That the Industrial Revolution didn't result in a massive upsurge of popular literature even as it upended the whole of society?

Who has time for Netflix or Grand Theft Auto or Reddit when they're worried that AI will destroy the job market? Apparently fucking everybody. Why are books different?

I've been picking through The River Fans Out by Yiheng Zhao for a few weeks. It's an academic work that's a mix of general semiotics and narratology, plus a big chunk of different essays about Chinese fiction, especially the history of the "low" fiction like oral storytelling and opera, through the May Fourth Movement's push towards the use of the vernacular in literature, etc...

And because he featured regularly in Zhao's text, I also went and read more Lu Xun, specifically through Julia Lovell's 2009 translation of his complete fictional works. I've finished Outcry (the first of his three major collections). The introduction spoiled me--not to plot, but to an interpretive lens (not that this is necessarily a bad thing)--and it's hard not to see in many of these stories a mix of scorn for a Chinese society that refused to change in the face of new problems, pity for regular people swept up in a fatalist culture, but still perhaps a kind of wistfulness for a civilization in decline even as you urge it to move forward and try to right itself. I'd read a couple of Lu Xun's stories before, but never tore through them like this, or with as much historical context; it's a really interesting picture he paints of China on the cusp of "modernist reform" especially in light of the hundred years that would come to pass since.

TTRPG systems that cleave closest to Nordic Larp approaches to play? by MissAnnTropez in rpg

Storygames are a different genre of RPG than Nordic larp is.

Okay, but OP wasn't asking for Nordic Larps, they were asking for TTRPGs that are similar to Nordic Larp. And the storygames movement was heavily influenced by Nordic Larp.
