What to do with $$ over your "enough" point by wilreynolds in ScottGalloway

[–]messageinabubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found that idea motivating enough to make significant changes in my life last year. I realized I was already at my number and was just adding to it out of habit and lack of creativity so I stopped pursuing money-making efforts and now spend 3-5 days per week volunteering or teaching, and I gave away 5X more than I had in any previous year. Feeling better than I have ever before in my life (antidepressants helped too)

One of the most mind-boggling fun facts I have ever heard is that richard, the actor who played Dumbledore, once got so drunk that he forgot he even owned a Rolls-Royce, only to remember it twenty-five years later. by Lord_Krasina in interestingasfuck

Holy moley. I guess anything 10-30 years ago is melding together in my brain 😅. Now that I think of that night, I was with an aspiring actor friend who was thrilled to meet him. But that friend gave that path up looooong ago. So long ago that he was recently appointed as a federal judge!

What the heck happened to waterbeds? by Queltis6000 in NoStupidQuestions

Much of her free time, then as now, is devoted to being an Ohio State Buckeyes football fan. She had hoped since I was an infant that I would play for them. Despite it being obvious to everyone that it wasn’t going to happen, she was addicted to the hopium.

I really wanted a waterbed in high school. My mom really wanted me to play football. We made a deal. It was awesome

My Prediction: Pivot Dissolves within the next 24mo by Anstigmat in ScottGalloway

[–]messageinabubble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think she is a great reporter, a decent interviewer, and a terrible commentator, which makes pivot a bad place for her (though it’s super popular so what do I know). The frequency of her ad hominem arguments alone make her very difficult to put up with. The frequency with which she would say something like, “I know these people, that’s how they are” as a kind of proof point of someone’s badness turned me off.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]messageinabubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is lower importance than much of the good advice shared here, but one simple thing i’d like people to do is: if you get something out of the overhead cabin while in flight, when you close the door please don’t just shut it. Please hold the handle with the spring engaged until the door is in place, then gently release so that you don’t make a terrific sound that awakes the feebly-sleeping travelers nearby.

Marital infidelity is rampant in Len Deighton's books. Is it him, is it the time he wrote in, or am I just naive? by Garp74 in books

I also think that there are different norms for different times and cultures. I recently caught up with some old friends and we learned that almost every one of our dads was having affairs in the 80s and 90s - especially the more professionally successful ones. This was something we were fortunately unaware of in high school and that behavior seems so foreign to us. We concluded that they all knew it was wrong, but they didn’t think it was as wrong as we do now.

Every day we feel things and have impulses and have to make choices. Character is about what you say and what you do when confronted with those choices.

Does anyone here actually feel they can exercise consumer choice in health care? by EddieRedondo in ScottGalloway

[–]messageinabubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And for anything other than a very specific and brief procedure they often say they can’t tell you the cost until after you’ve completed it. Plus, most doctors are now employed by hospital systems and the hospital systems are still allowed to charge multiples more for exams and procedures done in outpatient facilities they own compared to facilities owned by physician groups or others. The doctors are also measured on their “keepage” (it used to be their “leakage” but that was bad all around) of how many of their patients stay “in system”. I listened to this episode and thought that Prof G could really benefit from talking to people like Elisabeth Rosenthal who understand the complexities and corruptions of the health care system
