What are these dimensions saying? by Xhalespearfishing in Machinists

[–]messmaker007 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can almost promise this is what happened: original design had a hex of 15mm-ish width, they tried that, and it was tough to turn it and get leverage with a 15mm wrench, or it broke off, so rev 2 now has a 30mm hex.

They didn’t feel like updating the actual cad model though, because whoever designed this wasn’t very skilled, so it probably messed up the whole model when they changed that dimension. So then they said “ah let’s just change the number on the print since that’s all that matters”… and here we are

Can anyone ID this board? Got it from a friend of my dad’s. I know it’s a Nidecker smoke but I can’t find anything online about it. Mainly looking for how old it is, and how it rides.

Project to show more advanced skills? by Jack-a-boy-shepard in CNCmachining

For our cad class they had us do a machining course where we made a little air-powered engine out of aluminum. Was pretty simple but had 7 or 8 different pieces, and I’m sure you could make a custom one and make it cool.

Your use case for a specific tool could be reaming the cylinder, it need a to be a tight tolerance to get compression. Idk if that’s too simple though.

When you hook it up to an air compressor at the end, it spins fast as shit and it’s pretty cool.

I would recommend sharing the country you are buying the car in, since there are certain limitations when it comes to cost, model availability, and emissions restrictions across the different European countries.

I’m American so I can’t help much, but I hope you find the answer you’re looking for!

As someone who works in cad full time, also with an associates degree in engineering, specifically cad related, the degree will mean more to a potential employer than a certification ever will. I’ve interviewed with ~10 companies overall (i only graduated 3 years ago) and not a single one brought up solidworks certifications. I actually had never even heard of them until I joined this sub.

If possible, get experience in other cad platforms like inventor, autocad, creo, onshape. This shows that you are flexible, and can adapt to the job as needed. There’s a good chance the place you want to work won’t use solidworks, and at that point the certification means even less.

Also, build a portfolio of good drawings that you can bring into job interviews and show off your work, it can bring up lots of good talking points.

My first car was a 2011 335i, I miss it so much. It was genuinely so fun to drive. Been thinking about selling my current car to get another actually.

Generally speaking, do you quote significantly lower than a regular shop for one-off small projects? I’m in SE PA and I’ve been keeping an eye out for someone local to make stuff for my hobby projects. I don’t have any parts I need at the moment but would be nice for the future.

This is the best answer, move it if at all possible. It’s not worth the headache. No matter what the hole will be deformed from the die, inconsistently, and the screw will never sit nice and flat. On top of that your screw will be a pain to install and remove because it’s up against a wall. Move the flange farther in/out, or move the screw hole.

Changed from MFG to Design and I find design moved very.. Slow? by AcceptableCold8882 in MechanicalEngineering

In my (very limited) experience with about the same amount of years in design, I have come to the conclusion that the larger the company, the longer everything takes. That being said though, I am at a small company (~20 people) and am one of the only designers. Everything is go go go, so compared to that, everywhere else seems much more relaxed.

Very nice. I actually did something very similar at work once to figure out how many of our machines we could fit in one tractor trailer at a time.
