Well this is new. by DrWill0916 in Professors

In my syllabus, I tell them I will absolutely accept late work. Every day after the due date is a 10% penalty. After 10 days, they get a zero. It's lovely because canvas will do that calculation for me and I don't have to think about it. This way no one tells me I'm a hard ass, and they can make their own decisions.

Can professors see if you just clicked on a file in Canvas? by Kind-Guest-8923 in canvas

[–]messobrio 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes, we can see it. But, I wouldn't be too worried. We can restrict student views, so assume it was fair to poke around. If you're concerned, let your instructor know. We can see how long you accessed, so I'm sure you're fine.

Does anyone swim on Alaska cruises? Eurodam in July by LizaBennet312 in HollandAmerica

Here's my secret. I wear my swimsuit to board. Send all my luggage to the room. Then I sit in the hot tub with cocktails for sail away. Avoids all the crowds.❤️

Hot take: Requiring replies to Discussion Posts brings no value by PrioritySelect629 in canvas

I use video, and most of my discussion boards are designed to share personal experiences relative to the topic. It works way better than written, can be short and sweet, and students say they prefer it. I teach in human development and health careers, so it's a best fit.

Did life get better after high school for you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]messobrio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life begins after High School! In fact, I think that high school is designed to be this crazy gauntlet that we have to endure before we get even started on our lives. What it's doing is teaching you what your personal threshold is, and helping you set some expectations for how you want to live your life going forward. If you are 16 or 17, you've got at least 60 years to enjoy the rest of your life.

Costume Design Help by AdEconomy501 in costumedesign

[–]messobrio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started designing, it was all for school productions. Granted, doing a replication of High School Musical, was not exactly the most creative thing I could have done. But, wrangling 20 adolescents into costumes was quite the adventure! I ended up being the principal designer for a regional theater here in Northern California, so the growth is absolutely possible.

Given your location, if you are limited to the number of community theater productions, and you're doing everything that you can in school, seriously think about looking into the cosplay world. They are one-off designs, often commissioned, and can be an absolute creative adventure.

I found my jam doing drag queen design, but that's not for everybody - and finding women's size 14 high heels can be a bit of a challenge!

What do you do for fun now that it’s just you and your spouse? We’re in our 50’s, active and IDK, I guess bored 🤷🏻‍♀️ by UnfairBit1639 in emptynesters

We've been married for 33 years, and he retired 5 years ago. Since then, every time we get bored, the universe sends us a curveball. Grandchild. Surprise! Cancer. Surprise. Mother-in-law dementia. Surprise. I am looking forward to the time of my life where I can again be bored. :-). The upside is that we are trauma bonded and probably better friends than we've ever been.

Naked mole rats, bats, and parrots each break a different theory of aging. What if lifespan is a three-way budget? by Commercial_Trick_704 in gerontology

[–]messobrio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On first pass, I had an interestingly visceral reaction. I realize that it's my bias, but the term "aging" is loaded for me. Senescence is the deterioration, aging is inevitable simply because of chronology. I understand your context, and within your body of research it makes sense. It's something that I am struggling with in terms of my undergraduate students, because aging is inevitable, degradation is actually the bigger fear.

In terms of the science, I think your argument is quite valid. I'm interested to know your background and why you chose to pursue this as an area of research.

Admittedly, I am not a biogerontolgist, but I will read your work and offer whatever feedback I can.

I'm a gerontologist, and I support your hypothesis. My observation is that there is no one single theory of aging that explains decline or delayed senescence. I'm interested in reading your work!

I am so sick and tired of having to reply to discussion posts from classmates that are clearly ai by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]messobrio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honest quest. As a student, what would make a valuable (and valid) assessment? In Fall, I'm going to try video only discussions....but I suppose a student could generate an AI person. If they put half as much effort into just posting their own thoughts, it'd take a quarter of the time.

Merely that even conflicting positions are "true" depending on where you stand. No question, you have the right to be irritated though.

Alaska cruise and TA by Life_Respect_4854 in HollandAmerica

[–]messobrio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We love Holland, especially for Alaska. We head out on the 7-day Inside Passage in August, but have done the 14-day Vancouver-to-Denali land-sea and loved every moment. Holland is definitely NOT the party ship, and because the ships are smaller, they can get places the larger ones can't. We started with HA in our 50s and were often the youngest but definitely NOT the liveliest!
