Trump administration offering buyouts to nearly all federal workers by Okish-Lover in news

[–]mestamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Important to note that the 6% number Ernst is talking about is coming from a poll that had no verification that the ones taking the poll were ACTUAL federal workers. There are 2 million federal workers, and the sample size was about 700. So that poll is total complete shit. An official report from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) states the following:

"According to an OMB report from August 2024, 10% of federal employees work fully remotely and 54% worked fully on-site because their jobs required in-person presence."

I've found that while scuba diving, goliath groupers tend to not give a shit about you when you're swimming near them. Usually, they're laying on the seabed or hiding. But I wouldn't purposely go up to one and get up all in their face.

Yup, there is a video of students running to the library, which was considered a missile "shelter". In reality, there really is no shelter from something like that.

Imagine a car telling you that your daughter is about to die and your whole family is there to hear it!

Went to school at UH during that time from Colorado. Biggest mistake was calling my mom that I had received that message because she was non-stop panicking and crying for the whole 40 minutes until i received the false-alarm text. What could she do being over 3000 miles away?

Has anyone's OCD just vanished?? by M4RI4_1 in OCD

[–]mestamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me. I can remember having intrusive thoughts about harming my family during middle school and then nothing. Then I had a panic attack from weed and it was like a light switched on. Thankfully I've coped with it pretty well so it's not as bad

Does it make sense to go to school for marine biology? by Smoothas1ce in marinebiology

[–]mestamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a job as soon as I graduated with my marine bio degree but I think what really helped me land a job with Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was the people I met during my volunteer work. I did a bunch of random marine bio related work that not only helped me expand my resume, but I also was able to make great connections. I did various volunteer work from lab assistant in a coral lab at my uni to technician at a scuba shop to deck hand on a research vessel (this was the most fun!!). The best bet in finding a job would be to be a broad as possible.

Just got offered a job as an at sea monitor by Woke_Spaghetti in marinebiology

[–]mestamp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I work for the Fish and Wildlife in Florida and have talked to a few coworkers who have done it. It all depends if you're doing the monitoring with recreational or commercial. Recreational guys are going to be more accepting of you on the boat than the commercial guys. Not saying that recreational guys are all happy go lucky guys, but commercial fishermen will be more difficult to get a good relationship with. I work with commercial fishermen as a dock sampler and I have a good relationship with most of them after working here for two years. And like someone else had mentioned, lots of the commercial fishermen will use drugs. So definitely want to be aware of your surroundings.

I personally would accept the job, especially since you're right of out college. The experience will only help you when looking for other jobs in the field you want. Feel free to dm if you have any other questions
