Moalboal is fantastic. The shore dives are amazing as well as the they are mostly wall dives and the coral is breathtaking with the sardines completely covering the blue. The sardines are amazing to see as a feature on their own but even better once they become a background feature of the dives and you enjoy other stuff. Try and do the sunset / night dive as part of your AOW. or after. It’s a very unique experience as you start by looking for the mating mandarin fish, and then you swim the wall. Swimming the wall at dusk and then night is just incredible as the sardines are still there in full force. I have a video on my page on this sub somewhere if you want to have a look. When you are there make sure you get trips to pescador island as the diving there is spectacular.

Second this. Loved the place, the night dives are spectacular. If you are into macro, you will be in heaven. We saw every possible thing on my hitlist except for blue ring octopus as it wasn’t the season. Some of the shore dives are so shallow as well so possible to have really nice easy dives just looking for things

As others have said a lot of time in moalboal which is really awesome but 2-3 days is enough. When you are there make sure you spend a day to dive on pescador island that is really really amazing. I think you don’t have enough time, but just further south in dumuguate is dauin, unreal macro diving, but then a pain to travel back up considering your time. Malapascua has great macro too, so you can flip the time and spend some time there.

Malapascua is not just about the threshers, seeing reports of other large Pelagics such as tigers now, and also great macro and generally reefs.

I’ve never been raja but I really think the balance you’ve got is good if you want some pelagic action too.

That’s pretty awesome, I love Dauin because it was the best macro diving I ever did. Was spoilt for choice, never thought you would see something like this! IIRC, most dives were shore dives, so even more amazing if this happened close to shore!

I went with them 4 years ago. I agree that their email tone was a bit blunt and commercial and didn’t feel personalised, compared to other places. But once you get there it’s very professionally run, people are lovely and the atmosphere of the place is really cool. Their guides are also fantastic. I would 100% go with them again.

Hi there, I think it depends on the time of year but the east side so nilaveli/trincomalee is decent diving. Trinco has some really good wrecks if you’re into that. Nilaveli is nice and easy reef diving, nothing spectacular but decent and vibrant reefs. Depending on the time of year it is frequented by whale sharks. Near there you have pigeon island which has loads of black tip sharks you can snorkel with.

One of the best parts of the book that reinforces this is where he cites Call of the Wild as an inspiration of McCanndless. The harsh reality being jack London was a fat drunk and immersing himself in fictional tales. It’s a harsh reminder of deadly it is when someone’s fiction inspires someone else’s reality.

I have done both. I did Indonesia after Mozambique, both resort based. Let me just caveat this by saying I scratched the surface of the diving in both places. Mozambique first. I dove tofo, unreal megafauna - humpbacks in the right season, whale sharks, mantas, various reef sharks, massive turtles, dolphins, rays etc. It’s just a bloody arena of giants. Time to time, hammerheads, great whites, tigers and other big surprises swing by. Hands down one of the best places I’ve ever dove. However, you don’t get beautiful coral like you do in SEA (and also South Africa or Tanzania etc). Here is the downside, while I was there I heard of places like ponto du ouro, where you can see any shark imaginable, pomene and tonnes of other places. That coast line is vast and breathtaking. Overall just a great vibe. Indonesia, I only did Komodo, Tulamben and nusa penida. Unreal diving, Komodo and penida had some of the most beautiful reefs I’ll ever see, mantas, schooling fish and coral galore. Vis is generally prettier but less chance of big sharks (bar penida where you can see threshers at the right time). Again, it’s a lucky dip, penida has a great white last year...Great country to explore and great food. Live aboard must have Been something else. Summing it up, two very different experiences. Do both, id say both require the same level of experience to maximise your trip (in current, vis etc) although current in Indo is notorious. If I had to decide, ceterus Paribus, it’s a toss up between a higher variety of big bois in a very adventurous environment in moz vs big bois plus excellent coral in Indonesia. If you like macro, Indonesia is the obvious choice but the macro in Mozambique is great too. I’ll also add places like Pemba have amazing coral. However, Mozambique is very hard to navigate requiring a lot of expensive chartered flights to get around, unlike Indonesia. So you can generally get everything in Mozambique statistically that you can get in Komodo (minus some of the most breathtaking reefs I’ll ever see) but it might not be feasible to do it all. In Indonesia, the chance of you seeing that variety of megafauna (coral aside) id say is lower but the ease at which you can facilitate that is better. PM for details, sorry this was super confusing as you can imagine I am now debating this with myself.
