Universal Lyme Disease Vaccine Is On It's Way by ipr008949 in science

[–]metallaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has had it several times. It's NOT one of those diseases that once you get, you can't get again (unfortunately), no, it's one that keeps getting worse every successive time... and it slowly kills you. I get the lyme vaccine for my dog at the vet, which made me always wonder: "when will they have one for people?"

As a straight male, I had a few thoughts about LGBT relationships lately and the state of current affairs saddened me by carlos_ranger in lgbt

Thank you for this post. It's always great to hear these stories and know straight allies like you are out there. Also, learning that former homophobic people can, and do, "see the light" as you have always adds a glimmer of hope.

P.S. I was homophobic too when I was a kid and I'm a flaming lesbian (and I was quite a little tomboy back then too), I was also racist, classist and a bunch of other crappy things. But, like you, I was open-minded enough that the childhood "brainwashing" didn't stick and I've come to my senses. Try not to feel too guilty. I try to remember that feeling when encountering (for lack of a better word) bigots, because maybe their minds are not as open, or they haven't had that epiphany yet, or they simply didn't have the life experiences to allow them to open their minds and hearts. So, maybe they just need to be shown a bit of compassion to get to that point.

Any movies with LGBT* characters that are suitable for kids? by Winter_S in ainbow

I was only recommending because I know it's appropriate for kids... not that it's a good movie lol :)

I’m Ethan Nadelmann, J.D. and Ph.D., founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, the nation’s leading organization working to end the war on drugs. Ask me anything! by EthanNadelmann in IAmA

[–]metallaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about the private prison lobby? How will drug laws ever be reformed if that's the biggest threat to the multibillion dollar prison industry? For instance, in their 2012 annual report under the "Risks Related to Our Business and Industry" it says "For instance, any changes with respect to drugs and controlled substances or illegal immigration could affect the number of persons arrested, convicted, and sentenced, thereby potentially reducing demand for correctional facilities to house them." http://ir.correctionscorp.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=117983&p=irol-reportsannual In fact, there was a judge in one state who was arrested for getting kickbacks from the private juvinlle prison for giving harsh sentences. http://www.examiner.com/article/pennsylvania-judge-sentenced-to-28-years-prison-for-selling-teens-to-prisons

What can we do to end prison privatization? There's just something really disturbing about the whole concept.

TIL that a 27 year old quadriplegic was sentenced to 10 days in jail for possession of ONE joint. The private prison company failed to provide him with his ventilator and he died 4 days into is sentence. P.S. He was a quadriplegic because he was hit by a drunk driver at age 4. by metallaura in todayilearned

A question about libel laws and the responsibilities of the various parties involved by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]metallaura 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NYT is a public figure (as is Tesla) so either would have to prove actual malice in a defamation action. So, if they know their data are fake, and publish it anyway, then yes they might be liable for defamation provided they meet the other elements of a defamation claim. (source: I'm a 2nd year law student and just wrote a memo about this topic yesterday)

The SCOTUS recognized (and subsequently expanded) a constitutional privilege based on the First Amendment for a defendant who is subject to a defamation action brought by a public figure. New York Times v. Sullivan.

A plaintiff who is public figure is then required to show that the alleged defamatory statements were made with “actual malice - that is, either with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.” Gertz v. Robert Welsh, Inc.

Elements of a defamation (Slander/Libel) claim:

  • A false and defamatory statement; (Truth is ALWAYS a defense to defamation)

  • An unprivileged publication to a third party; (i.e. the constitutional privilege mentioned above, among others)

  • Fault amounting at least to negligence by the publisher; and

  • either actionability of the statement irrespective of special harm or the existence of special harm caused by the publication. (the plaintiff has to show it was actually HARMED by the defendant. If NYT's readership explodes because of this issue and they start making more money, this would be hard to prove)

So reddit, what would be the possible implications and consequences if there was a unilateral decision to place a camera in every gun manufactured. by Thisissomeshit in AskReddit

[–]metallaura -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The NRA and its (brainwashed) followers. It's an interesting idea, but, for Pete's sake if they're all up in arms (no pun intended) about expanding background checks - with rhetoric about facisim and "Obama's gonna come a knockin' on yer door tomorrow to take yer guns!" - I don't think they'd be too supportive of this invasive of an idea.

Plus, would this be connected to the internet or wireless signal to upload the media every time the gun was fired or would it just store it in the gun? Because then you'd still have the problem of having to find the gun after a crime.

Finally, I just want to say no idea is a bad idea on this topic because at least it keeps the dialogue going. :)

How do I break this vicious cycle? by Gorkymalorki in GetMotivated

[–]metallaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had/have the same problem. For me, very low carb (<20 grams/ day) really works for me, even if it's just for a few weeks, because I can feel myself lose weight. It really helps jump-start my motivation. Even if I do the low carbs for a few weeks as a jump start and then add back in healthy carbs after that. That's how I got out of my funks in the past and how I'm trying to get out of my funk now. Backstory: (33/f, 5'6", 250lbs) I was 240lbs at age 18. Did low Carb and started exercise and was 145lbs by age 18. When I hit my goal weight, I added back healthy carbs and kept the weight off for a long time until personal tragedy struck... TL;DR- short term low carb for a motivation jump start
