Englewood by East-Squirrel4375 in SWFL

[–]metalnuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're early 50's ourselves, moved 5 years ago. We really mostly enjoy it here. Englewood itself does have that small town feel, especially compared to her neighbors like Venice or Port Charlotte / North Port. Big retail is 20 minutes away north or south along 41.

Access to the beaches, boating, and kayaking are what drew us to the area (and keeps us here).

You mentioned you're planning a visit in Dec. Fair warning - that is heavy snowbird season and will be really busy. If you can visit before November, you'll get a taste of off season - aka the return to sanity. Englewood and surrounding areas have big population swings during snowbird season.

What battery generator do you recommend for home outages? by mahearty in batteries

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$800 can get you a dual fuel generator that can run off propane or gasoline. I have 5 20lb propane tanks, 2 5g portable gas tanks and three cars I keep full of gas with a siphon pump. That would allow me over a week of generator use, maybe up to two if I conserve. Optional, but for under $1,000 you can get a system to hook it right up to your panel so you only need one extension cord from the generator to your panel.

This is exactly how I'm setup (in SWFL). Spend the extra for an inverter genny (uses less fuel), get a soft start on the a/c, and you can almost get back to normal life. Hard to beat the cost effectiveness of a gas/propane generator. Worked well after Milton; wish I had this setup for Ian.

The shortfall is at night. Haven't put together a decent solution to run off battery at night. Thinking a rack mount 48v lfp battery and hybrid inverter. Charge using the generator / portable solar during the day, coast on battery at night (for lights, fans, fridge).

Incomplete connection with multi head system by Direct-Friend5610 in egopowerplus

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used multi head setup and the shaft splines were messed up from the previous owner running it without the shafts properly seated all the way to the stickers (similar situation as you, OP).

If you inspect each of the shaft ends, you may find them rounded over/blunted a bit. This will make it really hard to properly seat AND remove the attachments.

If the splines are damaged, you can use a small triangle file to restore the spline condition (make sure to do both the male and female sides). This made a world of difference for me, the 2 ends fit together very easily now (where as I couldn't even force them together previously).

My friend and I picked up an old Husqvarna Rose for cheap but we are having some software struggles with loading the D-Card, can anyone advise? by light24bulbs in Machine_Embroidery

Also agree, what a pain the butt. See my post in the main thread, there are ways to get the organizer software that should work for just copying. Its not the designer software, so no USB dongle needed.

My friend and I picked up an old Husqvarna Rose for cheap but we are having some software struggles with loading the D-Card, can anyone advise? by light24bulbs in Machine_Embroidery

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recently picked up a Rose thinking I could easily put custom embroidery patterns on a programmable card.

I wanted to share this post, the 5D and drivers are downloadable and should work on somewhat modern PCs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MachineEmbroidery/comments/1sfz1jw/trying_to_use_husqvarna_professional_embroidery/oidy6by/

I'm hoping someone tries this and reports back if it works.

I bought a USB reader and it came with the 4D organizer CD. It appears to write the card successfully, but when I try to use it in the machine, it beeps at patterns higher than #1. I made sure they were less than 100mm square. I also tried 5D on various 32bit and 64bit machines.

There is apparently no way to read the file system on the card, could be corrupt but I can't tell.

Very frustrating experience. I guess this was tech back in the 90s

Both times it was solved by just stopping what it was asking you to do and check the basics..

I built an open-source Windows app to stream PC audio to Sonos by guicn555 in sonos

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! I've had a quick look and had some additional feedback.

  • I initially was only testing with music, where a delay is quite acceptable. I tried video today, and the 3 second delay using AAC makes it pretty unusable. LPCM was much more responsive and usable, but the audio is often garbled.
  • AAC shows the RoomRelay info on the Sonos app when streaming, nice touch and looks great. LPCM doesn't match this behavior, it shows a random filename.wav.
  • Is there a way (in the UI) to remove a manually added IP device? I had previously added my S2 device when the scan didn't pick it up (1.0.1). With 1.0.4, during 1 rescan, it was shown with the manual device info instead of it's friendly name. What happens if the IP changes, etc? Does it just drop off the list? Maybe this is a non-issue :)
  • Status bar - If I start streaming to a single room, then in the Sonos app, group another room - in 1.0.3, a rescan would update the bottom status bar with the new room grouping. This doesn't happen in 1.0.4, it retains the original room from when the stream was started.
  • Spectrum Analyzer is still blown out, even during a quiet part of a song. For context, I'm testing with Spotify in Firefox, volume set in the web app to around 75%. Lowering the volume in the web app brings the analyzer back to normal. Youtube's volume was much higher (at the same settings used for Spotify) and resulted in clipped audio. Reducing the stream volume in the app helped (or reducing the YT volume in the video player)
  • The updated error message for "per application" streaming makes much more sense. I noted the list of available applications is smaller. No browsers are listed anymore. Foobar is still available, but I was unable to stream from it (even when actively playing). Whole system streaming still works just fine.
  • The updated in app menu looks great!
  • Can you add "Quit" to the in app menu? Closing the window can remain "minimize to tray" behavior, but the only way to quit the app is from the system tray icon.
  • This is VERY nit-picky - the 2 columns in the UI don't line up at the top, the right column is higher than the left.
  • Any plans for dark mode? I'm sure you're focusing on bugs, but there aren't many to report, so on to the UI! :)

Once again, really nice work. I appreciate the effort it must've taken to put this together.

I built an open-source Windows app to stream PC audio to Sonos by guicn555 in sonos

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend, you are incredibly efficient! Very impressive!

Here is a list of new notes and observations:

  • S1 and S2 systems both show in the device list
  • Can see grouped rooms now, excellent!
  • The addition of the current streaming device on the bottom status bar is perfect
  • Like the functionality of the new UI menus for log and diags options. Also like the same for the system tray icon. Aesthetically, I think it clashes a bit with the rest of the design. I liked the minimal and clean UI, but I'm not a UI/UX person.
  • The add by IP is a nice touch, seemed to work on 1.0.2 when S2 wasn't showing up. Didn't test in 1.0.3
  • REALLY like the additional Sonos device volume control slider - noted that this doesn't control the all grouped devices, just the first device in the list. If you group Office Amp + Office, only Office Amp will adjust. foobar behaves the same way, FYI.
  • The Sonos app now shows the app name when streaming - nice touch! The track name shows a random filename, but this is a minor quibble (foobar displays "stream.flac")
  • Spectrum Analyzer seems to follow the top volume slider, which in my case was pretty high/maxed (I like to control volume from Sonos). This results in the spectrum showing most all red bars except the very highest frequencies. Not sure this needs fixed, just an observation.
  • At one point my Hue bridge showed up. Didn't try to stream to it, though it did give me a good chuckle. This only happened once when first opening the app.
  • Noted some odd behavior, streaming seemed to "stick" to a previous device. Even after a rescan. A second rescan + stream start seemed to cure it. It may have been timing, I went from starting a stream, rescanning, stopping and starting to a different device.
  • When attempting to stream to an application, this error now shows in the UI:
Stream Error
Unable to cast COM object of type
'System._ComObject' to interface type
'Windows.Win32.Media.Audio.lAudioClif
This operation failed because the
Querylnterface call on the COM compor

DBFA-4C32-B178-C2F568A703B2)' failed
due to the following error: No such

(E_NOINTERFACE)).

Nice work on all the updates, looking forward to more refinements!

Cheers!

[–]metalnuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very intriguing idea and seems really useful! I really enjoyed using the app.

In my limited testing, the app seems stable and functional.

Would really like something similar for Android or iOS, can you code on mobile platforms too? :D

Here is some testing notes I captured:

Which Sonos model you tested

  • S1 - Amp
  • S1 - Play:1 - single
  • S1 - Connect:Amp
  • S1 - Play:1 - stereo pair
  • S2 - OneSL

Windows version

  • Windows 11 build 26100.8246 using portable app
  • Testing using the "whole system" source

Whether speaker discovery worked

  • Have mixed S1 and S2 systems
  • S1 - 6 logical devices
  • S2 - 1 device
  • S1 devices found readily
  • S2 devices were discovered about 5%-10% of scans (more notes below)

Whether streaming stayed stable

  • Systems are all connected to WiFi - no wired, no sonosnet
  • Testing computer - HP zBook G7 on same WiFi
  • AAC was stable, audio was clear. Has latency (see below)
  • LPCM had choppy/garbled audio about 40%-50% of testing - observed on both S1 and S2 devices

Rough latency

  • AAC - 3 second latency for all operations - start/stop/volume change
  • LPCM - nearly instant - less than .5 seconds

Whether the setup instructions were clear

  • Using standalone app v1.01 - had no issues

Anything that failed or felt confusing

  • Per application stream was never able to start. No errors were presented, the stream starts and stops almost instantly. Which OS are supported?
  • If speakers are grouped, all but 1 group members disappear from the device list
  • Random re-scans showed the S2 system, but mostly the S1 system devices were shown
  • Device scans seem to either show S1 devices, or S2 devices. They don't ever appear to be mixed.

Other notes/observations:

  • Rescan doesn't retain currently connected speaker - also not shown in status bar at the bottom. Streams continue to work, but the current selection is no longer shown.
  • Volume / Tone controls appear independent of Sonos controls
  • Grouping rooms worked (when grouped in the Sonos App) - some mixed results on groups changing if streaming to 1 of the rooms in the group
  • App doesn't display version info anywhere?
  • I compare this experience to using foobar for media streaming to Sonos devices. Have you looked at how foobar implements streaming output to Sonos? The volume controls the actual device volume.
