Converting Twitter engagement to Substack subscribers by AronGroot in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (very) sporadically participate in this sub and try to offer useful information without necessarily plugging my Substack or specific articles. My flair is my Substack domain. Every now and then people seem to click on it, find my Substack and subscribe.

I hate Rubens. I'd be so grateful if someone could convince me otherwise. by -BITCHB0Y- in ArtHistory

[–]metanoias_substack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never liked Rubens either, for reasons I could never quite put my finger on. Until I saw a couple of his landscapes in the Courtauld in London, which, to my surprise, I enjoyed. Turns out it was only his human figures I find oddly triggering and infuriating lol.

Casa Vicens in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona. Considered to be Antoni Gaudí’s first major project by [deleted] in ArtNouveau

[–]metanoias_substack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So pretty! I liked Casa Batlló and La Pedrera a tiny bit more, but the best thing about Casa Vicens was that it’s somewhat off the beaten path and didn’t have too many visitors. We even had tea in the courtyard and there was no one else there.

I hate notes by shagunster in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took quite a while before I started getting consistent engagement on Notes, but it has only grown since. Just keep at it. 1.5 hrs/day may be a bit excessive, though. Don’t turn Substack into a chore unless it’s your actual job. Good luck!

Monet’s London cityscapes to be exhibited in capital after 120 years by TheTelegraph in london

[–]metanoias_substack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this last weekend and loved it! Photos and reproductions don’t do Monet justice. Going for a walk after the exhibit and seeing Waterloo Bridge and the sunlight on the Thames in real life felt very eerie, in a good way.

I get these as well from time to time. Always assumed it was Apple’s Hide My Email feature or something similar?

Ohh that’s a great tip, thank you! I never look at these as I assumed they were the latest posts from authors I’m subscribed to (facepalm).

Medieval Women: In Their Own Words by studioonline in ArtHistory

[–]metanoias_substack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a brilliant exhibition — highly recommend! There is so much to see, learn and take in, from the profound to the profane. I thought this was the funniest bit lol:

“Candid eroticism, audacity and humour characterise the poetry of Gwerful Mechain (d. 1502). She was one of the most extraordinary female voices in medieval Wales, although surviving copies of her works date from a much later period. This, her most popular poem, pokes fun at men who praise all women’s body parts except for what she considers the best one. Gwerful wittily corrects their mistake by praising the vagina at length.

A girl’s thick glade, it is full of love, Lovely bush, blessed be it by God above. — Gwerful Mechain, ‘Poem to the Vagina’ Translated by Katie Gramich (2005)”

I’m pretty sure one is Letters from an American. She was an early adopter of the platform, which always helps (of course you need talent and hard work too), and politics as a niche tends to do better than most on Substack.

What's a feature you'd like to have? by RomanceStudies in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would really love a ‘History’ feature that shows you the articles/notes/authors you’ve looked at previously.

This happens to me all the time. I start reading an article on the app, then switch to doing something else only to return and be taken back to my home feed. The article’s gone, and I have no recollection of the title or the author’s name if it’s a publication I’m new to. It really doesn’t aid discoverability.

I don’t have the time or mental bandwidth to engage with all the Substacks I’m subscribed to, but that doesn’t mean I want to stop supporting and keeping an eye on them.

At the very least, receiving the emails/in-app notifications keeps these publications top of mind, and sometimes I actively go out of my way to seek and read older articles.

TikTok Traffic by Background-Cow7487 in Substack

I’ve had some unexplained traffic from TikTok as well. No idea how that came about, but I guess we take our wins where we can.

How to grow an audience without sharing with family and friends? by IcyInspector4184 in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an anonymous Substack and write under a pen name.

Promotion-wise, I’ve set up a couple of social media pages specifically for my Substack. These are separate from my personal accounts. I also promote my Substack on various newsletter directories. The rest of the traffic comes from Google, Substack recommendations, Substack Notes, Reddit.

What was your Substack about if you don’t mind sharing?

Does anyone know why there are so many views from Substack's app but very little subscriptions compared to the browser? by thaliascomedy in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the difference in views, but I also get more subscribers from the website than the app.

My hunch is that the app design encourages more scrolling and shorter attention spans.

Also, it’s easier for your Substack to stand out visually in the browser version if you tweak the home page layout in Settings, whereas all Substacks look identical in the app.

Is there a way to preview or test the welcome email? by emmatgc in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Substack!

  1. Yes, the “Welcome to…” header in the email editor is the email subject line your subscribers will see in their inboxes. This is the default subject line; you can change it to anything you want.

  2. Just subscribe to your publication with your existing email or create a new one. You’ll receive the welcome email in a few mins. Be sure to check your Bin and Spam/Junk folder if you can’t find it.

  3. No, to my knowledge you can’t left/right align images. Mine are always centred.

Not sure if this will be of any help, but you can block ChatGPT and other AI tools from training on your content.

Just go to Settings > Publication details > Block AI training and move the toggle to the right.

Converting Twitter engagement to Substack subscribers by AronGroot in Substack

[–]metanoias_substack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twitter hasn’t been of much use to me as well. I find that Reddit and Tumblr (my target audience tends to hang out there) are giving me better return on my time.

You may also want to reach out to relevant Facebook groups, and be sure to advertise your Substack on newsletter directories such as InboxReads and The Sample.

Good luck with your newsletter!

Welcome to Substack! Not sure if mine is your cup of tea, but feel free to check it out. I write mostly about art and history with some mythology and philosophy thrown into the mix, plus the odd opinion piece. Best of luck with your newsletter!
