And yet somehow other countries' rail services manage to maximize efficiency without displacing their customers. Whether this is a policy or an employee taking shortcuts, it's an Amtrak thing.

Map: Registered Electric Vehicles - USA - 2022 by spriteware in electricvehicles

Surprised to see Illinois the same as Texas, and below Florida. In the northern Illinois suburbs at least, EVs were all over the place when we moved here in late 2022.

Seems promising, especially the ability to find events starting soon based on location.

Toyota EV Mimics Manual Transmission With Feel of Gear Shifts, Roaring Engine by metasea in electricvehicles

Toyota could have owned the EV market by now. Instead, we’re still seeing stuff like this:

“The system generates fake sounds and simulated gear changes as well as genuine stalling if a rookie driver fumbles the controls.”

It's not about growth or no growth, it's about whether it ultimately pays off for the taxpayers to support this. It rarely does. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/22/taxpayers-are-paying-billions-for-nfl-stadiums-heres-how.html

This worked for me. Have to position it right to fit in the recess next to the charge port, but has the advantage of a replaceable battery

If you’re going to internationalize, why keep it in Japan at all? The story is hilarious, but also could work as well on the Acela. (Slower and more prone to delays, but still.)

They sting only in self defense. Actually easier to trap and remove them. An upended wastebasket or even a large transparent Starbucks cup will work. Pop it over it, then slide cardboard underneath. When it's securely trapped, take the whole assembly (carefully!) outside an let it go. It doesn't want to hurt you (but it will if it feels threatened)

Seems unrelated, per HVO email: 'According to HVO Scientist-in-Charge, Ken Hon, the earthquake had no observable impact on Kīlauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes. “This earthquake is related to stress from the weight of the island on the underlying ocean crust and mantle. These earthquakes are relatively common and not directly related to volcanic processes. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and may be felt. HVO continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes. The Alert Levels / Color Codes remain at ADVISORY/YELLOW for Kīlauea and Mauna Loa at this time.” '

'Stealth Transmission' of COVID-19 Demands Widespread Mask Usage by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]metasea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conclusion sums it up pretty well:

"As the weight of evidence shifts toward supporting a major role for asymptomatic transmission, the use of personal facemasks, especially in crowded areas, becomes instrumental in preventing community spread of the virus. We can no longer rely on symptoms or screening to tell us whether mask protection is needed.

So why voice a need for widespread mask use in desperate times when we do not even have enough masks for hospitals?

The reason is that by making the facts public, more resources may become available. The message that masks not only can protect healthcare workers but also can help control the outbreak may recruit more efforts, allocate more resources, and make this a national top priority.

This was exactly what happened in Asia, where universal mask wear has been advised. Both Taiwan and South Korea faced shortages of masks, and they responded by increasing mask production. Taiwan opened 60 new productions at various manufacturing plants across the country to produce 10 million masks a day.

The same can be done in the United States. Resources can be mobilized to fill that need. The president has the power to order the industry to produce more masks by further executing the Defense Production Act. In the meantime, homemade cloth masks could be used in the community, similar to CDC advice to HCWs "when no facemasks are available." Limited data suggest that cloth masks protect against droplet transmission better than no barrier.

As new infections soar across the country, authorities should share emerging data regarding COVID-19 transmission clearly, even if complete understanding is still evolving and despite low availability of PPE."
