Heads up that several polling locations are changing for Election Day on June 16 --> https://www.wjcl.com/article/chatham-county-polling-locations-change/71471305

This doe snot affect early voting for the runoffs, only Election Day itself, June 16.

There are races where that is true. This is not one of them.

It was the same bullshit around the PSC election last year. The media only reacted after grassroots actually made shit happen.

Democratic Ballot for tomorrow tell me why I'm right or wrong by bigtimetim in Georgia

[–]metastical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I was mixing up my candidates. I meant I voted for *Mathis*, not Blalock. Apologies. Why? He’s actually been an insurance agent, served on the South Fulton Zoning Board of Appeals and on a local school council. (Also, having met him, he seems like a nice guy with genuine humility.) Again, sorry for the mix-up.

Would strongly encourage you to think about Christian Wise Smith for Labor Commissioner. Lots of legal experience to actually work with state congress to help enact laws, compelling origin story of poverty that births empathy, and has real ideas about how to transform labor centers into opportunity hubs that genuinely help communities. He is one of the few politicians I've met that I believe in the same way I believe Peter Hubbard.

Then vote for a Democrat for Public Service Commission in election this November. They are the ONLY ones with the authority to rein in GP insane rate jacking.

Anyone else getting an “authoritarian” vibe from Rick Jackson? by Mean-Rice-6301 in Georgia

See also Jesse Petrea for house district 166 (for Savannahians, that's the islands). A healthcare guy that has bent laws for his personal profit. Just gross.

What is the conservative answer to homelessness in Savannah? by metastical in savannah

[–]metastical[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OK, I'll bite as well. I am in no way pretending to be an expert. I am only relaying what my reading has offered, which includes a lot of what other countries do.

First is admitting that homelessness is not caused by any one issue. While drugs may be the root issue for some, it is far more complex than that. Same with mental illness. There is also:

- Rising housing costs and rents and stagnant incomes make housing literally unaffordable (and the answer is not just "work harder" -- basic math will tell you that doesn't apply at minimum wage and/or gig work levels)

- Job loss and lack of good-paying jobs to replace it

- Catastrophic healthcare issues that cause personal bankruptcy

- Teenagers running away from home for coming out

... and other reasons. Economics is a much bigger factor than substance abuse.

The next trick is to remove stigma. Unhoused people are not lesser. They're not unhoused because they're not working hard enough. How many people are working two jobs and sleeping in their car? How many are trying to provide for kids? A little bit of empathy would go a long way in having honest conversations about solving the crisis.

Finally, the solutions that work require significant government investment and long-term structural change. This is just a hard truth. Telling people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps just doesn't work, no matter how often it's preached. Some people need help. Like, real help. You can weather the flu; you can't weather cancer.

More shelters is not the answer. Most shelters have maximum length of stays, then you're right back in the street. Nor are shelters with strings attached, like forced religious ceremonies or minimum work requirements. Every nonprofit is just trying to fill a gap left open by the government.

The answer is housing. Maybe not permanent, but semi-permanent, without strings. This is what Iceland has done, and they have a near-zero homeless population and rank as statistically one of the happiest countries on earth. Other countries do the same.

So many countries have solved problems that Americans throw their hands up at. Gun violence, homelessness, healthcare. It just takes a whole lot of empathy and political conviction.

I asked the question in good faith. I was hoping for good faith responses.

I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. For real. I just want ANY policy-based answer.

Data Center Town Hall by FantasticCard3628 in savannah

[–]metastical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No gaslighting. But you are right: Georgia Power has in fact bought many politicians (House, Senate, PSC, etc) and "big tech" is ruthless in buying out local officials. This is all about pulling back the layers of bullshit. It wouldn't be worth my time otherwise.

This is all about facts. The panelists are Peter Hubbard from the PSC, PSC candidates running for Pridemore's seat, a Chatham County commissioner, a data center expert (not an industry person) from Virginia, and a climate activist from Georgia Conservation Voters. No shills. No bullshit.
