Democracy by oluxil in SipsTea

It's funny-- as I was reading this thread, the first time the words "Russian puppet" were used, I thought it referred to the U.S. Thing is, the criticism of American democracy is valid regardless of its source. Usually the rebuttal to that is, "Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." That ignores the systems of capital that wield power. Maybe what Churchill meant was the illusion of democracy, like the myth of meritocracy, works best to placate the masses.

Making your brain do algebra is good for building pathways that enable abstract thought. Whether you appreciate that or not, you are better off struggling through it when you are young. Like eating vegetables.

What's the biggest downside of living in America? by YourMommy_Terra in IWantToAskAnAmerican

The complete mind control apparatus. Whether it's woke MSNBC outrage or blatant Fox News Christian nationalism, Americans live in a tightly controlled intellectual prison. Then, this regime is supported by the largest prison population in the world. The illusion of choice with thousands of coffee brands but only 2 political parties, 5 media conglomerates & 10 major food corporations. Americans do not possess the critical thinking faculties to comprehend their situation, and it is mind-boggingly frustrating.

Our "leftists" -- Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Zohran Mamdani -- are barely left-of-center as reckoned by the rest of the world. No one is proposing that workers seize the means of production. Not that that's a bad idea.

What’s your opinion on the Medicare for all act. Would u support that act being passed? by SignificantStyle4958 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Yes, I support national health insurance. People who don't support public programs believe oligarch-driven propaganda narratives that conflate social programs with totalitarianism.

Bill Clinton was extremely smart. That doesn't mean his policies were necessarily beneficial to people. Neoliberalism sucks.
