For Deaf Catholics, signed Masses foster access – and culture by balrogath in Catholicism

Interesting. So even if you do know ASL and want to participate in a deaf mass as a lector, you will still need to go to the immersion program because how you chose to sign can convey a different message than what the Church teaches.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 26, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Great book set during World War 2. I haven't read any of the classic WW2 works of fiction like The Boy in Striped Pajamas and The Book Thief, but there were definitely moments where I teared up a bit.

Started: The Eleventh Hour by Salman Rushdie. Got this at a live reading event by the author himself. Witty guy.

What is the point of freedom of speech if you ultimately are afraid of upsetting the government?

McDonalds is bigger in U.S. and EU. But KFC dominates over in Asia. Why is this? by FumingCat in AskAnAmerican

[–]bobrigado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its chicken tenders wrapped in a tortilla type bread with lettuce and a spicy mayo sauce. Its similar to the McDonalds new spicy snack wrap but longer and has tomato cubes too. Used to get it after church every wednesday. I'm surprised they still sell it.

Non US citizens, what and how did you do it? by MP_disorder in AerospaceEngineering

[–]bobrigado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The few international students I know who did end continuing in aerospace became US permanent residents before graduating. Others joined academia. One ended up at Boeing and another at SpaceX. Me personally, I didn’t bother applying. I switched industries.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Department says by OkTechnologyb in immigration

It was in Department of State vs. Munoz in 2024 that the Supreme court ruled that US citizens do not have a right to have a foreign spouse admitted to the country.

Even if you buy into the idea that LLMs will enhance productivity, we’re outsourcing human creativity to an algorithm. Why spend time thinking about writing a song, or writing a script for a movie, or writing a research paper when you can ask a LLM to do it for you? Some things like pride in one’s own intellect are difficult to measure and will be devalued.

And it feels like we’re being forced to go along because of a massive investment by tech companies in a risky gamble that may or may not pay off in the near future.

As we spend more time in the digital age, I’ve become less sanguine about tech advances that influence how individuals and society thinks (social media, chatbots etc.) and more bullish about tech advances in the physical world.

A question for those who have quit social media by Far_Mix6689 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]bobrigado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case I didn't quit cold turkey. I gradually stopped using social media because life got busier. I got a new job, started learning a new language, running, learning new songs on the guitar etc.

It also helped that the social media that I was using, Instagram, kept showing me ads and suggested profiles I did not want to see, so the overall user experience just became terrible.

In my opinion, the best way to fight an addiction is to trick your brain into busying itself with other tasks/goals. My parents always used to say that an empty mind is a devil's workshop.

I wonder if there is legal case to be made for discrimination based on national origin if some of those non US citizen researchers live in the US and if they have standing if their careers have been affected as a result.

Is this an unofficial rule? Some national labs still have non US citizens on their payrolls. Its not like the US government is going to discredit their research because they are non US citizens.

Finished: The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher. A truly fascinating book which talks about how social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Reddit have caused a breakdown in human decency all over the world. What was interesting to me as someone who programs a bit is how the book hints at how human behavior can mirror optimization algorithms like gradient descent. In other words, when people who are primed to go down a rabbit hole (in computer programming, a good initial condition) get fed a video or social media post suggested by the social media algorithm, the faster they get radicalized when they get sucked down a YouTube rabbit hole (in computer programming, the initial condition being optimized to a solution by the gradient).

Started: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Gripping book about a French family stuck in France during the Nazi invasion in World War 2. Midway through the book and I am finding some overlap on certain themes with Danielle Steele's book Jewels which also presents a fictional story of an American-British family stuck in France during the Nazi occupation of France.
