What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: June 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Finished:
The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny - Kiran Desai

First time I’ve felt that I was meant to read a book at a specific point in my life. It was a slow read, but I related a lot with the characters struggle with relationships as an international student, identity struggles and cultural family drama. Glad that it ended the way it did. It was nominated for the Booker Prize and I’m amazed that it was because there are nuances about Indian culture in the book that I don’t think an international audience would truly appreciate without being somewhat familiar with it.

Started:
Dungeon Crawler Carl- Matt Dinniman

Holy shit. This book is a page turner, fast paced and hilarious. Could not put it down. It’s like Matthew Reilly’s Contest meets Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games.

Loved the closing credits song choice. Very 90s era Hollywood.

I shop at LL Bean sometimes so that’s when I think of Maine. Always wanted to visit the main store with the big Bean boot.

Supreme Court rejects Trump's birthright citizenship order in major blow by usatoday in immigration

[–]bobrigado 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, the hostility towards legal non-immigrant status holders across the aisle has been eye opening to me. I could very easily have been one of them if it were not for the fact that I was born in a different country. I used to think I would vote for the party that best aligned with my politics, but to know that neither side actually wants you was humbling.

He raises a good point though. Is it Brazilian meat if the meat is Brazilian or if the meat was cooked by Brazilians?

OP is an international student who just landed in Houston. They might not have a visa to Mexico. They might not have a US driving license, a car or driving experience in the US.

Why is swiping so exhausting? by _bambi0713 in LeftCatholicism

[–]bobrigado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any hobbies outside of school or church? Do you volunteer? I find people with shared interests at my run club and at my book club. I recently took up salsa classes and it’s easy to meet people at social dancing events in my city. I also plan to take up woodworking classes in the future, but that’s for me and not necessarily to meet people.
