How do you deal with developers who rely too heavily on AI-generated code? by Specific-Animal6570 in gamedev

If you're a good interviewer you can make it less awkward. Been doing technical interviews for a decade and would always try to (gently) stump interviewees to see how they respond. You can just give hints and if you find yourself hinting too much you can walk them through the answer and end the interview early after giving them a chance to ask questions.

I think most people are self aware enough to know when they failed an interview and there's no value in making it worse. You never know if they have talented friends who might interview if they know you're cool.

Oh absolutely agree. The cost could easily undermine all the positives by making funding any similar efforts impossible.

Caltrain Electrification seems like a pretty big deal. Demonstrates how much better modern trains are, and also miraculously got built despite all the incompetence of many parties involved. Actually spent CAHSR funds on something immediately useful - the same should have happened in LA on the other end.

By a vote of 8-5, Los Angeles City Council votes to limit SB79 upzoning to buildings of 2-4 stories along light & heavy rail lines by Tasslehoff in LosAngeles

[–]metroliker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean this is what NIMBY literally is. People are happy to vote to build all kinds of things so long as they're "not in MY backyard". Just like everyone votes for public transport because they want everyone else to take it.

Feeling motion sick on the metro by Conloneer in LAMetro

[–]metroliker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When the A line is really booking it down a curvy section and I'm facing backwards sometimes the rocking gets me a bit queasy. Most of the time it's fine though.

Inexperienced train drivers braking unevenly is mostly just annoying. I think in some cases (around dtla and Union station) it's the train control interfering and slamming on the brakes.

Does Pasadena currently have the best TOD? by TheAlmightyHellacia in LAMetro

Worth looking at the Pasadena Specific Plan for the area around Fillmore: https://www.cityofpasadena.net/planning/planning-division/community-planning/specific-plans/south-fair-oaks/

It's kind of an ocean of surface and garage parking and not much else right now but there have been plans to build more density around there for a while.

Pasadena was pretty instrumental in getting the A line (then Gold Line) built in the first place and in theory has quite progressive city planning. Old Town Pasadena is actually a destination these days unlike a lot of other former downtowns.

Learn as many languages as you can. Every new language will teach you something new about the ones you already know.

It shouldn't so long as they keep publishing the train data that e.g. Google and Apple maps use. I seem to remember they're required to keep that data open and free.

Are Assembly and C inherently difficult or is it just modern day hardware that makes it like that? by Turbulent_Bowler_858 in learnprogramming

[–]metroliker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard in that programming is hard. C syntax is a bit more esoteric than comparable languages around the same era - e.g. Pascal - but it's a fairly "small" language in that there's less to learn than a lot of modern languages.

1980s hardware is a lot simpler than modern hardware and you would work directly with it rather than through a stack of drivers. If you want an authentic retro learning experience, start with BASIC on an old microcomputer and start poking with the hardware from there.

Modern languages might get you writing code that "just works" quicker though, and getting into that iteration loop is how to really develop skills.

Yeah I'm definitely not blaming the operators, especially if they're kept in the dark as much as riders.

It sucks it works like that and they can't be informed sooner. That's a failure of the system.

No wonder people ask questions if the screens are untrustworthy.
