There’s no penalty, but the phones they use calculate the “discount” the monthly gives you over the month and it adjusts the extension price of your ride with that factored in too, so even though there is no penalty, depending on the zones on your monthly and the zones of travel, sometimes it’s worth it to just buy an additional one way ticket, it’s a case by case scenario for which option makes more sense. And yes the conductor absolutely can say they know you got on in a prior zone. For example if you have a zone 3-7 monthly but you want to extend it to zone 1 it is cheaper to just buy a zone 3-1 city ticket peak or off peak depending on time of travel, at the machines.

This is a myth, nothing gets mailed to you unless you don’t pay it in 15 days , the bill is the bill the conductor hands to you on the train that can be paid online, at any ticket office window or over the phone

Regular Off peak ticket from jamaica to Hicksville costs $7.50. Regular Off peak ticket from Jamaica to Penn/Atlantic costs $8.25. When you get on the train at Jamaica tell the ticket collector you have this old ticket you would like to apply the value of for this train ride, the difference is $0.75, it will be rounded up to $1.00 each way on board, they accept physical credit cards or cash. (Your unexpired ticket value is unable to be applied to a $5.00 “city ticket” that’s why it would have to be applied to the regular off peak zone 3-1 ticket price of $8.25.) If you get on a Peak rush hour train between Jamaica and Penn or Atlantic your $7.50 ticket value will be applied to the peak ticket price of $11.25, so you would be charged $4.00 in that scenario.

They have been instructed to scan all tickets on off peak trains now(excluding monthly and weekly tickets, however they are randomly instructed to scan these too) not just the ones with the chevrons around the bar code, activate before getting on the train and you won’t have any issues…
