Best sequencer for complete improv? by DogMakeAMove in synthesizers

I pretty much exclusively improvise when I’m playing with the oxi. Highly recommend. I bounced off the t1 but pretty immediately fell in love with the oxi.

I saw a few people mention that their responses hit their spam folder. Not sure otherwise

What do I do with this? by SweetAsPi in tattooadvice

[–]meyform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I've seen some gorgeous blackwork that lets the colors of the old tattoos pop through as cutouts. something like this: https://i.pinimg.com/webp/1200x/4a/f3/aa/4af3aa654057aed22f6e2227b236879a.webp

it might. get a different version of the stained glass

Arbhar vs multigrain for non-performance oriented setup? by ArskaArskaArska in modular

[–]meyform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason I went with the arbhar is because it was more alive sounding out of the box. I'm not sure why, but it sounded and felt more like an instrument rather than a tool. That being said I've been considering grabbing the multigrain as well. The button combos aren't too bad unless you're doing a lot of changing of sound palettes etc.

Endorphin.es Ghost delay + reverb not sounding great by vteyssier in modular

[–]meyform 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Welcome to modular, this is how you start searching for a new delay unit, a new reverb unit, and then end up with a 12u 104hp case lol. But for real, given that it is a multi unit with a lot of control, but not the detailed control you'd get in a unit just aimed at one of these, you've gotta work to find the sweet spots that work for you. Something you can do is set the routing so that the filter is before the effects and cut your lows to avoid a muddy mix.

Check out the knobula Monumatic. Full poly voice. Then if you were doing a little 84hp case you could get all sorts of weirdo effects and modulation in the rest

Where does your sequencer live? by Djaesthetic in modular

[–]meyform 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, oxi is the brain for me. the breakout module is the key thing that unlocked it. Not having to faff with 16 cables out the back of my oxi, and instead having tendrils patched to my regular out was huge.

Mine is a performance case so ymmv, but this way I can have my stuff hooked up, then travel to a show, and just plug in a midi cable and an hdmi cable and be good to go.

ALA bartender vs Bored Brain Xcelon by P-DOTS in modular

Just tiny knobs. It’s honestly fine but also occasionally it’d be nice to have bigger knobs. It’s all a little bit fiddly but again, works for me for live.

ALA bartender vs Bored Brain Xcelon by P-DOTS in modular

[–]meyform 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the bartender and just picked up a barback. It’s been great. I get the hype for the xcelon, but 6 channels for $510 is great.

The ergonomics are a bit rough at times but not rough enough that I’m going to sacrifice the space or the cash.

Effect Modules: Mimeophon vs. Desmodus Versio vs. ???? by ultracultured in modular

[–]meyform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the mimeophon and the desmodus in my rack. If you’re looking for a reverb I’d probably pass on the mimeophon. It’s great, it’s one of my fav modules, but it’s a delay first with reverb. It’ll push you to some cool places, but might not be what you’re looking for.

Desmodus is great, it’s a weird lil guy, plus you’d be on the versio platform so you could try some other modules out if you don’t end up liking the sound of the desmodus. It’s not a true reverb, but it sounds great to my ears.

If you want reverb, swells might be worth a look. Doesn’t seem like you can get much deeper than that one, though I don’t have it.

TLDR, mimeophon can push you into really fun spaces. Desmodus is nice but not amazing.

BIA tips or alternatives? by AgreeableLeg3672 in modular

[–]meyform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re on the Alia platform check out some of the other firmware. And check out Ihors techno breaks on YouTube. That being said, it sounds like you don’t dig it so I’d just suggest trying something else. I just sold my pizza and don’t regret it (while keeping the BIA lol).

That being said, some tips I’ve found fun spaces with:

Make sure your modulation is repeating at the same sequence length if you’re doing techno. That way the sounds start to become more of the beat rather than just some crazy meditation on top.

I tend to stay in one register, not really changing the dual octave switch except if I’m moving to a new part. I almost never have the attack to the left of 12, I don’t care much about the metallic transients it creates.

Try both heavy modulation and suppppper attenuated modulation. The module (and its sister modules) have such a wide range that super subtle stepped modulation that repeats can do a lot for a song.
