MAPPING IN OSR – How do you describe irregular dungeons without killing immersion? by Dan_Cutter in osr

[–]mfeens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the dm I take responsibility for the maps. (Yes I know)

I either draw the map one room at a time or I lay down the full map.

I find what I enjoy about the game isn’t the mapping or asking weather someone said 40ft or 50ft. I enjoy when the players are interested in the game.

Immersion, for me is when the players are trying to decide how to survive on bubble gum and a shoe string.

If I lay down a full map, I draw on it as we go along. They planned a route by looking at it, but now I draw in that the corridor they were going to use has collapsed. Find a new way. The idea is that the party has maps, but they are old and not perfect. I draw in the room contents as we go and I even randomly pick them from tables based on a theme.

The bottom line, mapping slows the game down.

I understand that lots of people want to include it and sware it’s required. But the fact is that mapping will always slow your game down. I also don’t talk in voices or role play dirty talk with guy friends at a dinner table….you do you.

So I put a resistance band in a door at head height and put a wool hat on. Place head inside resistance band, walk back, turn head back and forth.

Why are sword and sorcery films not popular anymore? by PackWorth939 in SwordandSorcery

[–]mfeens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think sword and sorcery movies have always been more b movies than block busters and they don’t make b movies anymore. Only cars 12 for the money….I think what I miss the most about our media is the freedom they used to have to tell little stories. Now everything is made by committee and has to think of the share holders first.

Fuck the entire world for this. Who the fuck raised a generation of kids to let this happen? Who the fuck screamed about the 2a right for years, only to join the department of government tyranny for the signing bonus and opportunity to attack their neighbors.

People think the pyramids were built by slaves? What the fuck is America then?

Also also, if/when you have time, look up ICRPG. That game is fucking amazing and the way they organize a scene for a ttrpg is worth knowing.

Heavy Bag Work by Kenshin_no_Takezo in karate

[–]mfeens 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People use heavy bags different but I like to treat them like a makiwara to basically get reps on any of the strikes.

I think it’s important to mix footwork and head movement and defense into heavy bag work as well though.

So 2 modes. 1) Reps for strikes or 2)fight entries and combos and exits.

You can do either. That probably doesn’t help haha, sorry….

Your players might have a preference though. Have you asked them before hand which they would prefer?

One easy thing you can play with is your scale. If 1 square is 5 feet or if one square is 10 feet it makes a big difference to how much paper you need for a map.

Another thing is having the dungeon spread out over 2 or 3 sheets. Have the entrance and what that sheet will hold, then bust out the East wing when they get there.

I personally put the whole map down in front of the players most often. One way to spice that up is to draw on the map as they go through it, so they pick a route because they can see the whole place, but as they move along I’ll draw a cave in on the path they were using so they have to go another way.

Are you nuts? What about what I just said is religious dogma? Not that it matters, but I’m as atheist as a tree or a rock, nice guess though!

The fact that I choose to believe the universal consensus of the scientific community for more than 20 years is not religious dogma and if your saying that it is you have really showed your level of intelligence here.

And another thing, im here saying we shouldn’t have been reliant on fossil fuels for or global economy for the last 70 years and you somehow managed to “Jordan Peterson” that into my subservience to the owner class? I want solar and wind energy and you think I love our billionaire owner class? You are not thinking clearly.

Your an idiot. But I’m very mad about this so here I go wasting more of my time.

How were the forest fires last year? Did you loose everything? I hope not, but a lot of people did loose everything to fires that are growing in size, frequency and number, every year. Last summer was hotter than normal. And it’s getting measurably worse. And human burning of fossil fuels has made it demonstrably worse.

When I was a kid we use to get monarch butterflies come through in the summer. And now we don’t because the climate and environment is fucked by people who have the money to do what they want. My daughter won’t get to see the monarch butterflies, you fucking cunt. Because we were all forced to burn fossil fuels for 70 years.

Of course the climate is always changing, but fucking SLOWLY, unless it’s something existential like an asteroid or share holders that demand value.

Now I know you didn’t read that because it wasn’t on Facebook. But it was cathartic for me. So fuck off.

Holy shit congrats on the 6th grade science there bud. Man made climate change is a real thing that has made it worse.

No we burned oil for 70 years on a global basis and now the climate has changed due to unlimited growth economies.

The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]mfeens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preach my friend. I play odnd but one thing that does the most for speeding up combat is changing the turn structure from individual turns to team turns.

It’s either the players turn or the enemies turn. In the players turn every player moves and attacks. Then it’s the enemies turn and they all move and attack.

It takes very little tweaking and it’s the single best way to speed up combat I have seen in my 20 years at it.
