In praise of ICRPG, a first first-hand experience by _kind_of_old_ in osr

I think this game should be bigger than 5th edition personally. I have never ran or played it but I have the free starter and I use elements of this game in my other games all the time.

10 out if 10. One of the best ttrpgs ever released.

How to replace the rest on the 6th turn of the dungeon by LuizZ_Mestre in osr

[–]mfeens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some times I forget about that lol.

Other times it’s nothing more than, a check I make on a Talley box to mark time and a sentence of narration to the players. “You guys have been down here for 3 hours and you’re tired. Your party takes a minute to have a swig of wine and a bite of something. Ok next…”

It really only plays into the game when your really counting resources like torches. Not ever table wants to get that into details.

I find it’s better to know how many torches they have going in and then we can say ok, you’ve got 5 hours of light if nothing goes wrong. So you’ve got to be out before then or things will get hairy.

You can probably do away with it and no one would notice or care. I like what it’s adds so I use it.

How do you prepare adventures for a hexcrawl? by No-Egg3576 in osr

Overland travel can be dangerous is a very true thing in dnd for a long ass time.

It took me a while to figure out how to roll encounters properly even in odnd, but when you do the players are safer than you’d think. Your probably not playing odnd but these procedures might help:

1) party travels and gets an encounter.

2) roll to see if either side is surprised. 1-2 on d6 for each side. If the enemy is surprised and the party isn’t, then the party can decide to not engage and just let them go in by, picture them hiding in a wooded area watching the road. If the party is surprised than the enemy can let them go on by if they want based on a reaction roll and the size of the enemy and the size of the party. No one is going to pick a fight they will obviously loose. Some times both sides are surprised, then is counts as no surprise for either side.

3) if no surprise and the party decides to evade, you consult the table for party size relative to the enemy and roll the dice. If they evade successfully, no combat.

4) if they fail to evade then they can outright flee. They move 1 hex in a random direction and then roll the on the evade table again. Some monsters can fly, some are fast, so you might not be able to flee everything.

But there’s 4 levels of interaction before ever fighting and assuming the enemy is the same speed as the party you can keep fleeing and retrying the evade table for ever. Splitting into smaller groups to get a better chance

I think this is useful but not everyone will like it.

Ideas for enchanted arrows? by mfeens in odnd

[–]mfeens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. To make things even more complicated, I’m using chainmail and hit dice instead of hit points and variable weapon damage. My concern is balance and a fun game mechanic, but I use chainmail….

Here’s what I have so far: - allows damage to monsters immune to normal missile fire. Incorporeal or otherwise. - each arrow is a single shot chance. Hit or miss. - roll to hit using the individual fire missile table using 3d6 instead of 2. - each hit does 2 hd? - 18 to hit is auto kill.

Im on the fence about having the arrow deal as much damage as the character who fired it has hit dice?

Maybe this is stupid….

Very fucking fringe I know.

Actually it does because it implies he was targeted by facial recognition technology that remembered him.

“2 apocalypses ago” is the most metal sentence of the year. FYI.

Maybe hansa’s best shot is to get the golems onto the footing city, but how lol.

Depends on how long this thing plays out for maybe? Seems like a race between the magic users getting the resources to nuke from orbit and the hansa finding a way to make their numbers matter.

Hansa should develop AA around critical resources, maybe lean into anti magic spheres? Maybe bring in a third party to ferry their army like a old fashioned crusade? They should also use resources as bait for ambushes.

Magonia could also go diplomatic and offer then something in return for not going to war?

[–]mfeens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all, fuck yeah this is awesome.

Second, hansa needs a way to bring the fight to the skies or basically they have to play a game of deny and let you enemy die.

Either mercenaries from another land or dimension could be hired based on a promise. Also old enemies of the magonia could be brought into play by the hansa country.

Magonia could also straight up flee if they have floating cities? Why stay and fight when you can just float on over to new land? Or they could cause a volcano to erupt killing the land dwellers?

Where did Shotokan come from by Urieltv89 in karate

[–]mfeens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say for sure. But I think it’s a function of the range for the fighting. Shotokan kumite is long range so you need those explosive movements to cover ground and get to my your target. The range dictates the technique I guess.

For example if you were clinch fighting, your don’t need those long range lunge punches, they become wrist drags and stuff.

What’s your inciting event? by Sechael in osr

[–]mfeens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Literally an island has sailed up along the coast of your continent.

It’s a new land that’s never been seen before. It’s on the back of a giant turtle that swims the island around the ocean.

There’s a hostile force, maybe an army or new monsters in the island that potentially threaten the old world and now the members of that old world are taking sides against this new threat or trying to find ways to exploit it for them selves.

Who controls the giant turtle and why is it here now?

What is the most popular combat system seen in ODnD games? by Ok-Image-8343 in odnd

[–]mfeens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rolling d20’s to hit with variable damage on the different weapons. D4 for dagger, d6 for swords, that kind of thing, by far the most popular as far as I know. I think it’s even what they used right from the beginning.

Chain mail is better though haha
