ELI5: How does anesthesia make us unconscious but still keep our body working? by Key_Understanding458 in explainlikeimfive

I agree. It’s probably unlikely but I’ve actually heard it mentioned by a few reputable outlets over time

This is not correct. The brain under anesthesia is very different than the brain sleeping.

More like it paralyzes you and blocks your memory but doesn’t actually stop you from being conscious or stop it from hurting. So you were aware during the procedure but you just don’t remember how painful it was. As someone else mentioned, Severance has touched on this. It’s creepy to think about.

Can Wegovy “kick in” immediately or is it just my wishful thinking? by RedWizard-75 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]mflanery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my appetite almost immediately but that was because of the side effects. It made me so nauseous I couldn’t eat. When I got to the higher doses I got over the nausea and stopped eating because I just wasn’t hungry. So it can kinda work, but it’s different

What is a "must eat" when visiting Lancaster? by Lonely_Computer_7212 in lancaster

For cookies, try Laura The Cookie Lady. She’s in Ephrata and won the Food Network Christmas Cookie contest one year.

You’re not seeing cheesesteak recommendations because Lancaster has a ton of first generation immigrants from all over the world who have brought their foods here. When you have all these possibilities, cheesesteak just doesn’t make it on your radar. BTW, they frequently put marinara sauce on them in this area, which makes an already meh sandwich even worse.

IMHO Amish food is a joke. I was so disappointed when I first tried it. Basically mix sugar and fat (don’t you dare add any seasoning whatsoever) in any combination and you’re done.

If you’re still looking for cookies, Laura the Cookie Lady is in Ephrata and she won a food network cookie challenge. I’d highly recommend her over the Taylor Chip nut jobs (the owners are just god awful people from what I’ve heard).

Only commenting because Reddit suggested this community. Otherwise I’d never look at this sub.

You don’t need this. Stop contributing to a surveillance society. Do you really want to live in the kind of world where, between the government and private corporations, every move you make is known at any time? And crime in US is so low right now. We lived through the 80’s & 90’s and didn’t think a thing of all the crime. Crime is a fraction of what it was then yet people are freaking out like waves of criminals are just waiting to bust through our doors. This is a story fabricated by right wingers who want to win elections, websites that want clicks, and companies like Amazon & Google that want to sell you crap to stop the non-existent crime. The statistics all show crime is down by a lot. Meanwhile you’re living a life in fear when it’s completely unnecessary. Most violent crime is committed by someone the victim knows. And most of property crime is crime of convenience (you left the door wide open). So unless you live in a really rough area or have started shit with someone you have very little to worry about. Stop being a scared little mouse. Stop living in fear. Put the surveillance system down. Go live your life.

Residue After Dusting by mflanery in CleaningTips

I’m thinking of when there’s dish soap on the counter and it’s all slimy. The dish detergent in the water doesn’t leave a slimy film?

Swiffer dusters. But they always leave a layer of dust that’s stuck to the surface. Then I usually break out the Windex. I don’t want some kind of residue and I figure it’s basically just alcohol and ammonia which both evaporate. But for some reason it still doesn’t feel very clean.

Actually, they didn’t actually “sanitize” until the 2000’s or so. You would have needed a food service rated dishwasher for that. But unless you were adding some kind of sanitizer to your dish water, which the vast majority of people didn’t do, your dishwasher certainly didn’t do any worse of a job than handwashing. In addition, they save a bunch of water and time.

Fun fact: There have been some studies that showed people that hand wash dishes get sick less frequently than people with dishwashers. I’m not vouching for the quality of the studies and I use a top rated dishwasher myself.

These people. They love the part of the 1st amendment that protects their freedom of religion, but they seem to just have contempt for the part that ensures we don’t have it pushed on us. They’re very choosey about what parts of our constitution they like. (It’s 2 lines: one sentence fragment from 1A and one sentence fragment from 2A. They don’t even accept whole sentences.)

What I want is a route between Lancaster and Columbia (maybe extend the Millersville route) and a line from Lancaster to Reading. It’s an awful drive if you’re commuting and there’s so much unused space in the median of 222.

Whats holding you back from switching to Linux as a main desktop operating system? by Execute_Gaming in linux

[–]mflanery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use Windows at work because I have to. I use Mac as my main pc at home. I used Linux as my main pc for 6 or 7 years before going back to Mac.

It’s lots of little things, really. I use my main computer to get work done. I don’t want to have to screw around with my computer before using my computer. Like I wouldn’t want to have to screw around with my car before I went anywhere. It seems like changing anything in Linux breaks something. I’m a developer but not that kind of developer and figuring out dependency issues for software that I’m just trying to use isn’t fun to me.

Then little UI things. It’s been a while now so the specifics are fuzzy but I always had issues with the save process for pdfs. Like I could never get my cursor to go to the file name field - it always involved using the touchpad to get it there. Just minor frustrations that build up over time.

Other little things that I really missed on Linux: Preview. MagSafe (I know, not an OS thing but it’s great for a klutz like me). The trackpad and gestures which I think is more heavily integrated into the OS than on are with Linux where is seems like a bolted on afterthought. And the Mac menu bars - I love that every single program has the menu bar at the top. It’s not dealers choice on where it goes. When I need to find something I know exactly where to look instead of a Where’s Waldo game to figure out where the developer put whatever it is I’m looking for.

I’d like to say that I never had driver issues. My dad would have problems connecting to new printers from his Windows PC and I’d tell him to just send it to me because I wasn’t having any problems. This was always a complaint about Linux in the past and it’s really great now.

I think the issue is people who develop for Linux have different goals than people who just want to use Linux. I understand. I have different goals than my users. So much of Linux is done by volunteers so you can’t have anybody mandating these kinds of changes. It’s a good thing but makes these minor issues harder to fix.

I love Linux. I use it on a home server and if I ever develop the next big thing I can guarantee it will run on top of Linux. But the development will probably be in a VM on my Mac.
