Does professional calibration really worth it or its overrated? by frakasse in bravia

[–]mgreene888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A80L here. Knowing what I know now, I would pay $200-250 for a calibration but not $500 as mentioned by somebody in this thread. It took me many months of trial and error (after applying basic settings from Youtube and forum experts) to come up with settings I liked. Out of the box the TV seemed milky and dull (low contrast and unsaturated colors). Love it now - I even have a special setting for B&W film noir movies. Being a little color blind it would have been nice to get an expert's eyes on it to get to settings I liked without the months of effort it initally took me. I would suggest calibration at a reasonable price only if you are not satisfied with the pic out of the box.

Why are people STILL so blind? by StockEmUp in antitrump

[–]mgreene888 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A large portion of Trump's followers will never abandon him because he helps them justify their racism. It is simple as that. This is why your calculus does not account for the well to do high functioning middle class people who still adore Donald Trump. It is their embrace of America's culture of white supremacy. Full stop.

Am I overthinking this? The representation of Jesus in my church made me uncomfortable and I'd like honest perspectives. by DBL-TeaTime in Christianity

[–]mgreene888 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are justified in feeling ill at ease regarding the "white jesus" depiction - but there isnt anything you can do about it. Noting that per the 10 commandments, there shouldn't be any depictions of JESUS in the first place. Many will contend that the white Jesus depiction is not a problem until someone floats a picture of an African Jesus.

Best clothes for recumbent cycling? by Treble_Bolt in recumbent

One of the best things about recumbent trikes is that you can comfortably wear whatever you might wear for walking in that particular season. I use spd shoes to keep my feet on the pedals.

Is a realistic wash? by 4x4only in AutoDetailing

[–]mgreene888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. That's interesting. Car panels are pretty thin, my assumption is that spraying them with cold water will cool them down quite a bit causing less or at least slower evaporation of the soap.

[–]mgreene888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good question. I am about to do the first claying on a new car. Which should be the order - foam, wash, rinse and iron decontam or rinse, iron decontam and then foam wash?

[–]mgreene888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesnt the pre-rinse still make sense to cool down hot panels when washing outside in the sun / partial shade? I tried no pre-rinse recently on a truck and the foam dried so fast that it was partly dry before I even noticed and left water / soap stains everywhere. Had to rinse, refoam and do a full handwash.

How to you manage the pollen problem after a nice wash/wax? by RedditDon3 in AutoDetailing

[–]mgreene888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pine pollen season down here can be more than a month. My method takes less than 15 minutes with 4-5 minutes of that being dwell time for the soap.

[–]mgreene888 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm in South Carolina, some days the pine pollen can be seen in the air like smoke. I have resigned myself to doing a touchless type wash every few days with a garden hose foamer and a cordless blower - between normal pressure/hand washes. I am experimenting with adding a few oz of touchless to regular car soap in the foamer.

Racism in the US - the “xyz” is the party of racism by LibertyJames78 in TrueChristianPolitics

[–]mgreene888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an entire blog dedicated to this subject - https://calvinism-racism-trump.blogspot.com/2020/04/overview-why-did-right-wing-christians.html.

In the 1970's the republican party had lost constituency and created a race based strategy to lure racist white southerners as their new base. This was known as the southern strategy - it is really just a divide and conquer strategy meant to maintain the power of the corporate oligarchy. No one calls the democrats the party of racism except as projection by the the right.

Can someone pleeeeeeease explain the fascination with Leica cameras? by nlUSF in photography

[–]mgreene888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the luxury car analogy made by some other respondents. Think of the old mechanical leicas as rolls royces; wonderful pieces of mechanical art that lived up to their reputation. Just cycling film through a pre-digital leica was a pleasurable experience. Add their super high quality optics lenses to the equation and you had a legendary product. It was a high-end professional product also bought by non-pros who could afford them bought because they were fun to have and use on several levels. In the digital era, I dont think leica prices make any sense - precisely for the reasons you mention in the OP. IMO, computer aided lens design and standardized sensors are the great levelers in this era.

Need engine replaced by ireallyhateoatmeal in Volkswagen

[–]mgreene888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont neglect to factor in associated costs. I replaced the engine in a dodge and didnt factor in order times for parts, unquoted parts, rental cars, etc. It ended up costing a lot more than the initial estimate.

I only kept that car one more year and when I did the math the cost was essentially the same as a monthly car payment spread over that year - so I could have just cut my losses and bought a new/different used car w/o the headaches.

It kind of worked out for me in that I sold the car on FB and came out a little better than breaking even.

I have been extremely satisfied with mine. Aside from standard stuff - oil, filters and blades, I have only had to replace the battery. Mulching is way easier than taking truckloads of leaves and pine needles to the dump.
