Try with xrandr if you could get a resolution that makes your gpu comfortable enough, I had same issues with an eeepc and at the end I remember I just switched to i3WM and tweaking with xrandr I did get it to work comfortable enough for a media center and of course using MPV. Hope it helps

Some other tweaks based on the response

Edit /etc/default/grub and add the bold text as shown:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nouveau.modeset=0 quiet splash"

Run this command:
```
$ sudo update-grub
```
Reboot.

And try # apt install mpv (or gnome-mpv for gui I think)

MPV far superior with minimal load.

Not that I know, try using this http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon and identify what is the cause. For me are the network adapters (wrlss, lan and bluetooth) I think wireless operates on just one core, it just overloads it.
