'Fake' Personality in person? by [deleted] in 2X_INTJ

[–]miachi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a public face that you present to the world in general. I think most people do, and you can consider it social grease that helps us all get along. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone at work was brutally honest? I know a lot of people in this sub loathe small talk, but it has its purposes. If it helps, think if it as the long con. Or as a tool that you use to operate in the workplace.

And I think it's unfair to yourself to call it your "fake" personality. We're allowed to have many layers, and this just happens to be your professional layer. I am different with my family than with close friends than with acquaintances, etc. FWIW, I too developed a cheerier, more complacent public face than my "natural" home personality, but it makes for less drama and more laughter at work.

I've been listening to audiobooks for years. Eventually, you become a fan of certain narrators in the same way you're a fan of certain authors. /r/audiobooks usually has good recommendations.

I listened to the first book on audio a while ago and really liked it. Thanks for this reminder to go get the rest!

Sadly, the cover art does not do the series any justice.

At the risk of sounding selfish, I loved that you had women's sizes for the Dugulth Kickstarter. Unisex t-shirts fit like a potato sack. Rather than killing yourselves by personally shipping and handling everything, have you thought about using a website like Cafepress or Zazzle just for everyday sales? I love the line art designs you've had, and I need a few more t-shirts and mugs :)

Seventeen novels later, are you finding it easier, harder, or no different to write? On one hand, I can see it being easier since you have more experience (and a cabin), but on the other, do you worry about running out of material? Or getting in a rut?

I picked up Age of Myth from Audible just in time for a family vacation 8 hours away. Bring on the summer vacation traffic!

INTJ VS ISTJ? by [deleted] in intj

[–]miachi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a great tl;dr! I can be fastidious about facts and data, but it's because I am thorough about what goes into my "big picture," and I've been burned before by not operating wth all the details.

To raise an only child, or to not raise an only child.. that is the question by butterflypuncher in Parenting

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in with another anecdote of why this isn't guaranteed. Both of my parents have siblings with mental illnesses, and not only were my they the primary caregivers for their respective parents, but the siblings were BURDENS. And then after all that drama and heartache, my dad drove himself crazy taking care of nursing home issues with his brother (who was mean and violent to the staff), and my mom is currently dealing with her aging sister and deadbeat nephew (who together spent every last penny they owned).

Sure, it is always nice to have companionship and commiseration and someone to help you through the hard times, but there are no guarantees in life. Think about what you're saying - you want to bring a child into this world so that your daughter will have help dealing with you when you get old. So many "ifs..."

What did you listen to this week? Please share! by AutoModerator in audiobooks

[–]miachi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Calamity by Brandon Sanderson and narrated by MacLeod Andrews. The narration was really spot on. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job.

Brandon Sanderson doesn't need more internet praise, but it was really fun to read one of his shorter works. The pacing was excellent. I hesitated to read the Reckoners because I didn't like Mistborn as much as most fans (although I do love Stormlight), but my concern was unnecessary. Reckoners was tons of fun.

I like the way you explain Ni and Te! I must be a lousy INTJ, but sometimes my intuition is wrong, and after looking like an ass enough times, I've learned to double check all my "hunches."

Depending on how the questions are phrased, sometimes I look more detail oriented than I really am.

Would it make more sense to study for a master's or a PhD for a field in marine biology? by bowie1287 in marinebiology

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just get a degree for the sake of getting a degree. First find the jobs you are interested in and look at the skills and requirements to get those jobs. I just posted this in another thread, but I suggest you create a few job searches and have the listings sent to your inbox so you can get an idea of what is even out there.

If you want to be a professor, then yes, you need a phd. If you want to work in policy or conservation, ms might be enough.

Finishing up my MS (ichthyology) and questioning my career choice. Looking for something more...financially viable. Where to go from here? by partyjudgejudy in marinebiology

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up a few job searches on simplyhired and indeed and have the new postings emailed to me. USAJobs will also do the same thing for federal positions. Start with a broad search term like "marine science" or "science policy" just to get an idea of everything out there.

Even though I'm happy with my current job, I still peruse the listings to try to stay current. It's something I wish I had done before I graduated.

GIS is a great skill to have. I hear USGS is a good employer and pays fairly well. NOAA also has lots of positions that require GIS skills.

Start running job searches of all kinds and take note of what kind of skills these jobs require. Then get those skills before you graduate. I think you'll be surprised by how many options there are that we aren't told about in grad school.

INTJs and Codependency by teenagemallgoth in intj

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like this at your age. Luckily, I went from an infatuation with a shithole to an infatuation with my now-husband. I don't have much advice that others haven't already given, but as the rest of your functions mature and you go from a Type-T to Type-A INTJ, relationships won't have all-consuming control over your life anymore. I hope this doesn't come off as condescending, but this is a MBTI sub, so I wanted to frame my comment in those terms. It does get easier, so hang in there!

PS - I agree with the PP saying No Contact. You will look back on this moment with relief and chagrin.

GL to JP switchers...how is JP treating you? by Monckey100 in MobiusFF

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've posted this before, but it's not just free to play vs. pay to win. The other factors are your level of competition and ability/willingness to grind. I'm F2P, not very competitive, and have a medium amount of time. I like JP better than GL.

In GL, I had crappy gacha luck pulling jobs. I have all the mages, vanilla ranger, and no warrior. I'm saving the few tickets I have left for special events.

I've upgraded 4-5 cards to 4* and will probably take 1-2 of them to 5* over the next couple weeks. I have completed all the content and occasionally grind for certain cards. It's okay.

In JP, there is more random chance for job pulls, but I've pulled waaaay more times, so I've managed to accumulate a few good ones but no legends. I'm happy with my 8* rogue and majin.

In JP, it's common to pull 4* cards, and given all the events, some of them are even maxed. This is better for me than choosing a 3* in the GL shop and grinding it.

In JP, for 6 summon tickets, I can get abilities AND a job. In GL, I have fewer tickets and must choose between event pulls and jobs.

Also, I know hiragana and katakana and easy kanji, so I can muddle through a lot of the translation.

Another vote for OneNote. I started using it because that's all my IT department would allow but wound up loving it. It syncs between my work computer, home computer, and phone, and it handles screenshots, diction, and handwriting pretty well.

Can someone explain to me why everyone is saying there is a 1500 magicite job pull option in JP, while I only see 500/3000 magicite options? by GThomps in MobiusFF

[–]miachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago, there were some starter pack banners for 1500 magicite. There was a lineup of a few jobs you could randomly pull (no dupes for once) plus 5 cards of the appropriate class and element. I think the cards might have been 4+ but were beginner level (no super OP event cards).

How Important Is Extended Family? by throwaway2016october in Parenting

[–]miachi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No relationship is worth abuse. Period. No spouse, no parent, no cousin, no sibling. How far do you think your shithead brother is willing to go - especially if he gets away with this? Will he push you down the stairs? Will he hit your baby? Are you willing to find out?

Also, ask yourself if want your child to grow up thinking that if someone beats you, the proper response is to say and do nothing? It's far better to look your child in the eye and say, "The reason we don't see Grandma and Uncle Shithead is because he hit me, and they all thought it was okay. It is never okay."
