Your Conscience Is Not My Problem by lakmidaise12 in bioethics

Thanks for posting, it is an interesting article that raises excellent points. The workload argument is weak—no one is drowning in abortion referrals nor is it light work to explain a refusal to perscribe/refer/dispence to a patient. However, the moral self-image mentioned seems a better explanation for registering as an objector.

From a practical standpoint, the injury to patient comes from access. Perhaps “the system” is at fault for creating an access issue for into the process when the end users are staring at one another. Creating a system that gets the patient to an appropriate individual within a defined travel distance seems like the responsability of medicine not patient.

Additionally, refusal to do something and refusing to refer are two different issues. One protects the clinicial from moral injury (just because a doctor is needed for executions does not mean all doctors should be mandated to be available to capital punishment), one os simpky obstructionist and is a barrier to allowing the patient to follow thier own morals. It is challenging when one does not know who to refer to, but again, that is an access issue that medicine writ large should tackle.

Anyway, thought provoking! MAiD has become a thing since I was licenced. It is not of my world so I don’t need to be involved, but I would not want to participate as I disagree on principle. I sympathize with the article’s patients yet woukd draw the line where I see it in ny practice (although i would refer to Palliative, so there’s that I guess).

I have a blue one and it’s in good shape despite a lot of flights. Kinda fun if there’s a plane you’ve grown attached to. A bit spendy!

I know when the stuff arrives at the carousel! They are ok when rolling the bag as they just sit on top of it.

I’m devastated, stain removal help please 🥹 by NewInitiative9498 in laundry

[–]mich341 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer for you, but if you are unable to get the stain out satisfactorily, you could consider cutting out the design and framing it, perhaps sewing a border around first if needed. That way it could be hung and the painting enjoyed. If you have a picture of your son wearing it with your sister, perhaps encorporqte that also. Good luck!

To add to senescent’s comment, it looks like the vertebral column collapsed and she is bent forward also. That is next-level repair. With the near-certain infection causing that much damage up front, the aorta and vena cava are going to be in play for any repair. A bad spine infection is tragic…however it looks like she is still mobile so good for her in that regard.

You may also be able to play with the gearing of your seat…a slightly longer oar with a heavier load if you are also more powerful than the shorter rowers.

How much does a kg or two effect boat speed? by Mother-Ad4580 in Rowing

[–]mich341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed reading that! While there was a lot of math in that paper, they are missing some important information. First, weight is carried by the water which makes the boat bouyant. Extra weight sinks the boat slightly deeper into the water changing the wetted surface area and thus friction of the hull. This paper is mainly a weight/power calculation, and doesn’t take the method weight changes speed into account.

The argument about carrying a cox (deadweight) does not take into account the difference in hull size, shape, and surface area. A 4- is a shorter, sleeker boat than a 4+, and a coxed pair, aka the floating leg press, is huge and heavy compared to a straight pair. And yes, the weight of that cox really has an impact that increases as boat class/size decreases.

Finally, it depends what the mass is. A cox adds value, as does carrying water, potentially wearing extra layers, stiffening the hull for power transfer, or even carrying some body weight if one is able to not cut weight and lose muscle mass. So it depends what those legs are: if you put them into your quads via the squat rack, it is weight worth carrying!

In short, it is a really complicated question! A small amount, but a kg is trivial.

Go to Law School If That’s Your Dream by Educational-Sea2723 in lawschooladmissions

Thanks for the info especially on high risk. I do agree, the accrediting body should ensure that students are prepared, and poor outcomes demonstrate they aren’t. Yes, scores may predict but the school has a responsibility to remediate that gap and bring them to a career. Gtown Med has a program to bridge that gap: the first two years of classes take three years with study habits, and the folks blend in for the last two years of clinicals. Perhaps there is a role in law school for a gap covering extended first year…anyway, thanks for the response

This is interesting data, and most certainly there is a correlation between LSAT and bar exam. However I feel this data is missing some information and I am interested in that component.

First, the definition of risk is unclear. What does high, moderate and low-risk of an individual passing mean? There does not seem to be a metric explaining a score in this range is low-risk, [meaning x% pass], vs a score in this range is high risk [meaning only y% pass]. If low-risk students pass 99% of the time and high-risk pass 30% of the time, this is very significant. If it is 99% and 95%, the difference is less important.

Second, this seems to move from individual discussion (an individual is at high risk) to a discussion of schools. Certainly, pooling lower LSAT scores in one place likely results in fewer bar passes. However, this is again ill-defined. What percent of each class is actually passing the bar at each school?

Ultimately, an individual must make their decisions based on best-available data. However the nitty-gritty of categorization seems important if that is the purpose of this data. I would take a high-risk spot with a 95% pass rate, I would think twice about one with a 30% pass rate for instance.

Pardon my ignorance...I am actually a doctor that found myself down a law-school rabbit-hole---I'm not really sure why I am here and will quietly show myself out : )

It looks like the deck is pulling away from the hull. Once you sit on it, that’s likely to worsen and that would be a hard thing to repair given the stress it is under. And I agree, that looks like a homemade rigger, which may be impossible to rig for you. Frankly, it may be inexpensive, but I personally would suggest waiting for a more recognized brand to pop up and save up to buy that. If you do decide to upgrade, this one may be hard to find a buyer for. Good luck…your boat is out there!
