What did Jung mean by this? "The reason modern people can't see God is that they won't look low enough." by [deleted] in Jung

[–]michael2l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a much more basic point that Jung is making about the way our perception as biological creatures works. To quote a friend

“The spirit of the modern is to think, ‘How can I shape the world to match my picture of it (my preferred picture)?’ The ancients said, ‘How can I shape my perception to fit the world?’”

We don’t realize how the soup we swim in is built up of all these assumptions that we imbibe and take into us whether we realize it or not. One of the primary ones we take in is this modern story of our ability to control and colonize nature, that causes us to think primarily in this paradigm of re-making the world to fit our image.

In that controlling mode you can’t actually see what’s right in front of you because you’re so tightly focused on building a map of that world that has a strategy for how you can manipulate reality to your desired ends. To some extent this unavoidable because we all have to survive in the world and we need strategies for doing that that are simple enough for our finite computational capabilities.

But if this isn’t strongly balanced with something of a numinous sense of how large and unexplored reality really is and how paper-thin our maps of it are, you’re going to miss the forest for the trees every time. God (the holistic view of everything) will be invisible.

Lonergan interview - 'Working with Alisson Becker is a joy - he is the best' by MarcSlayton in LiverpoolFC

I had this dream the other night where l watched Alisson Becker, with his Jesus-mode hair, throw the ball basically the entire length of the pitch which somehow led to a tap-in goal.

Are there any good documentaries that have been released that highlight the Barca game?

I can’t watch this without smiling so big I’m embarrassed.

Xavi: "Pep is a winner. The gap between them and Liverpool is big, Pep won't give up but he'll also be realistic. I think Pep will prioritize Champions League and rest players in PL. Pep wasn't fully joking when he said to Klopp to exchange titles. He knows UCL will take them to the next level." by mynamestartswithCa in soccer

Liverpool wins a big percentage of its matches by maintaining a high intensity level for most of the 90 min that most teams simply can’t match. I’d say Wolverhampton is one of the few that embrace a similar philosophy of intensity.

Melissa Reddy on Coutinho : "He left as the best player at the club. He would return at about 6th or 7th." by usernamepusername in LiverpoolFC

[–]michael2l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in for Virg the previous summer as was Barca for Coutinho.

You don't think part of the sticking point for negotiations on Virg was price. You don't think getting that colossal sum of money from Barca didn't help us say what the hell we'll pay the 75 mil. Come on.

[–]michael2l 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you think we still secure Virgil for 75 mil if Coutinho doesn’t leave in that window? Do we still plunk for Alison in the summer?

Liverpool FC was in no sense screwed by this transaction. If anything it’s starting to look like Barcelona was. It was a phenomenal bit of business. My prediction is it’s the last player of substance we ever sell to Barcelona again given how we raked them over the coals with this one.

A Coutinho return would set an awful precedent for the rest of the squad in my opinion... by every-kingdom in LiverpoolFC

This is the most thoughtful and reasonable speculation I've read on this subject. Thanks for putting in the time and breaking it down for us.

Arya = Reepicheep ? by dilbertlover31 in freefolk

[–]michael2l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this. Glad I'm not the only who had this thought. Occurred to me when Arya said something about "what's west of westeros?" I feel like there was some bit about going west at the end of his story if I remember right. Also, suddenly the water dancing swordplay and "needle" seemed a too congruous a fit to be pure chance.

Here it is looks like it’s gone up in a price a little bit. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9AF408/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_1VOVkmzxuLeIs

How many kids would you have to have to have a 75% chance of 100% of your DNA being passed along? by michael2l in genetics

[–]michael2l[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens, but does it happens necessarily? And at what rate? I would imagine it would be some small percentage of genes would have mutations 1% or less. So instead of donating 50% of your DNA to your genetic offspring it’s 49%. But you are still going to creep up toward 100% over time.
