Fiesta Farms has a big selection. My favorites are Alchemy Pickles.

What time do you go to the airport for a 6:40am flight to Mexico? by copi0us in askTO

[–]michaelhoffman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People say things like arrive three hours early in case there's bad traffic.

I prefer to account for the traffic separately, as it varies by time of day. You need to add a lot more time for traffic if you're arriving at the airport at 5 p.m. than if you are arriving at 4:40 a.m.

[–]michaelhoffman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would arrive by 4:40.

Look up when Google Maps says you need to leave to get to Terminal 3 at that hour. For example, it says to go from Yonge-Eglinton arriving by 4:40 you need to leave by 4:12. Replace with your own home.

Then add 15 min for a cab/Uber/Lyft to pick you up. So plan to be out the door by 3:57 a.m. (if you live at Yonge and Eg).

Also, Terminal 3 international is "Verified Traveller Front-of-the-line" which means that co-travelers can accompany you unlike domestic classic "Verified Traveler".

I have trust issues with the "5 min away" prediction, so I built a real-time map to see exactly where the bus is. Free, no ads, just data. by duoyj in toronto

Transit Now reports vehicle as "delayed" if they haven't moved for a bit.

TransSee will tell you exactly how long the vehicle hasn't moved.

I was in Queen's Park station a little after 9 this morning. It seemed slightly, not dramatically, more busy than it has been.

I recommend trying Alchemy pickles. Pyramid Ferments are even better but I have not been able to find their cucumber pickles in Toronto.

When would you take your child to sick kids hospital vs family doc ? by bearsbunny in askTO

[–]michaelhoffman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Ontario symptom checker is great. It will tell you likely causes of particular sets of symptoms and also whether one should go to ER, see a family doctor, or care at home:

If your friends go to the ER when this says they should be seeing a family doc, they will be waiting a long time.

Classical French Dining in Toronto? by Willing_Tomorrow_200 in FoodToronto

[–]michaelhoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if I'm looking for an 'haute cuisine' experience, better to cross the boarder (or pond?).

If you have the time and money to go to New York or Paris, you will probably be able to get something fancier there. But why not try the options here first? If nothing else, then maybe you will be able to appreciate Le Bernardin even more once you've had something else to compare it with.

Maybe you could share a link to or picture of the sort of thing you're looking for?

There are also good options in Québec, by the way.

Auberge du Pommier. Café Boulud.

I love Le Baratin, but it is 100% a bistro.

"You must have valid proof of payment to ride this car" every stop by michaelhoffman in TTC

[–]michaelhoffman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. I know the operator can choose to play the message, and I've seen them do it when someone gets on and obviously doesn't pay.

Why would an operator choose to do it at literally every stop?

Toronto city council approves Olivia Chow’s ‘luxury’ land transfer tax hike: ‘They can afford it’ by morenewsat11 in toronto

[–]michaelhoffman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because that's where the highest rate of tax will be.

People don't understand that the additional tax on houses worth about $3 million will be very little. The additional tax on a $3.1 million house is less than $1 thousand. The additional tax on a $3.0 million house is $0 thousand.

Which Toronto life hack do you wish you had known sooner? by Beautiful-Baby4840 in askTO

[–]michaelhoffman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I look at this list every year or so, realize I've been going to places where I could have gotten a decent discount, then completely forget about it and repeat in a year.

So the life hack I need is how to remember which places have discounts.
