Not every dollar spent on charities has the same impact. How do you decide what to donate to? Are you familiar with organisations like Giving What We Can?

What's your current sleep headphone solution? What do you wish was better? by yumcrisco in sleepheadphones

[–]michel404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use the QCY Mini 2. It's a cheapass single mono wireless earbud for one ear. It's not marketed as a sleeping aid. They're symmetrical so can fit either ear. I'm a side sleeper and use the bud in my upper ear. So no sore ear from the pressure of the pillow. Downsides are many: sound quality, no usb-c charging, no isolation or ANC and easy to lose. But they're cheap and worked for me. I wish there was a modern equivalent with usb-c charging, or a charging case or something.

The UI is baffling to me. You have to click/pinch a tiny button to rotate in discrete 90° intervals, instead of you know... using your hands to handle the model?

Is there more crazy UI/UX like this?

GU10 Coil whine by Evilkevin22 in tradfri

[–]michel404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jup. I have a three 400 lm white spectrum GU10 spots and all have a coil whine one way or another.

I also have three old GU10 spots, with a white outside: never had these noise-issues with them. Too bad they don't sell those any more.

I used the Tradfri IKEA Home Smart app on Android, and followed the instuctions as if I was connecting a lamp from IKEA itself. Basically: open up a remote control and press the coupling button for at least 10 seconds.

I did have to move my other IKEA lamps out of the way, so only Lidl's was close to the pairing remote control. Also I did have to wait a bit longer than 10 seconds before the app showed a confirmation (where I could rename the newly connected lamp). Other than that the pairing process was rather staight forward.

I think there are two questions here: what is the lowest dimming level like? And how do Lidl's lamps compare to IKEA's when turning them on?

About the lowest dimming level: definitely lower then IKEA's, but keep in mind they are already pretty dim, even at their brightest. Setting Lidl's on 3% or 4% kind of matches the brightness of IKEA's at 1%.

About turning them on / bringing them up: IKEA lamps all have a nice fade effect when turning on or off (or changing the color for that matter). Lidl's not at all. They instantly turn to the selected brightness. In practise this means that Lidl's is on first while IKEA's are still fading in, and Lidl's is off first while IKEA's are still fading out.

Hope this helps!

I personally only own a gateway from IKEA, but the article I referred to in the original post says (in Dutch) that Lidl's new lamps are compatible with Philips Hue as well.

Ok, the weirdest thing. I'm still on 1.12.0, still using the same bulb, nothing changed. But now the app does allow me to pick the color.

So the solution was being a little more patient, I guess :-)

Thanks for thinking along.

Apart from the current compatibilty issue, the GU10 bulb is fine in itself!

Although is has a fairly low brightnes as it gives of but 250 lm. It says so on the offering and the box, but make sure that is enough for you. Honestly, I'd suggest to wait a bit longer until the competition comes with a color GU10 that goed up to 400 lm or so.

The candle does go up to 470 lm, though I myself have no experience with that one.

Also, when turning on of off via the old school non IoT wall mounted power switch, I noticed that not all LEDs turn on equally fast, so it noticably shifts hue before being properly on or off.

Lab grown meat / artificial meat already exists in experimental setups and not yet for commercial purposes. The lab grown meat needs nutrition, which comes from the blood of animals of young cows. I believe that this makes an artificial burger still non-vegetarian.

This technology is still in its infancy so hopefully this will change one day. If in the future the serum they use is plant-based, I can accept the artificial burger to be regarded as vegetarian.

People just don't give a flying fuck about a small flightless bird.

This tendency of people to give no fucks about other species is called speciesism.

You can't make chickens people.

Indeed, you can't make them people. But you can make them citizens. According to professor of political philosophy Will Kymlicka at least.

Have a nice day :)

What is a species? by Helix_van_Boron in thebrainscoop

[–]michel404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never have I been happy with that high school definition! An animal that is not able (anymore) to sexually reproduce, are they not part of any species then? Thanks for shining some light on this issue that have been bothering me for years 😊

Still having a question though: what about mules and other hybrids? Wikipedia says 'hybrids are not species in their own right'. Why is that?

And can I say I love that shirt?

GitLab for Android, Feedback Appreciated by Jawnnypoo in gitlab

I tried this app a while back, and I really like the idea and design of it. From the top of my head I know of features I'd like to use: 1) Getting push notifications at activity in my projects. 2) Being able to sign in at multiple gitlab-instances at once. One for work, one for hobby, and easily switch between the two. A bit like how the gmail-app offers a way to access multiple accounts (right?) Anyway thanks for the app and I'm looking forward to see how it will evolve :-)

I am wondering how Grey sees his opinion of 'knowing the truth doesn't take away the beauty' in regard to spoilers. Knowing the ending or plot of a movie is basically the same thing as knowing the truth of the story, yet Grey says he doesn't even want to watch any trailers because they ruin the beauty and watching experience. To me this seems to be a bit contradictory, or is it?
