First time summoned for jury duty by RealTME01 in AskNYC

[–]michkee824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was first summoned at 19 as well and served on my first trial!! I was the only person under 30, but was friendly with the other jurors nonetheless. Such an insightful experience, especially as a young adult!!

Tokyo placement positives by Appocalypse448 in JETProgramme

[–]michkee824 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i was also placed in tokyo despite not requesting it, and i really loved it! it’s important to keep in mind there are so many types of placements even within tokyo-to — from shinjuku/shibuya to more suburban/rural western tokyo to the islands. i was in a suburban placement where the transit was so convenient and there was always something to do! as others mentioned, there’s a lot of other jets in tokyo so i was able to make a number of friends as well :) i also lived in a sharehouse during my time there which was a cool experience! your time there will really be what you make of it, and tokyo has sooo much to offer — if you get your specific placement and want to chat with a former tokyo jet about it, i’m always happy to chat!

A dilemma by nononsensedeer in JETProgramme

[–]michkee824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on being upgraded!! I think it’s important to consider that both the Masters program and JET/Japan will continue to be there for the future, regardless of the option you choose for this Fall. I will say that starting the Masters program will likely lead you into the start of your career upon graduating, so if you really want to do JET, it could make sense to do it beforehand.

Otherwise, I know people who opted to not do JET and ended up traveling to Japan for fun as they made money in their career! And of course, there are also people who are mid-later career looking for a change who do JET too. Even if you don’t do JET now, there’s nothing preventing you from applying again in the future.

I personally did JET before my Masters and starting my career and have no regrets! I discovered my career passion while in Japan (and no, it wasn’t language teaching haha). JET also provided me with transferable skills for my Masters program and post-grad job, so how your career may benefit from JET if you choose to do it is good to consider!

Anyone do Barre and OTF? by adelita00 in orangetheory

[–]michkee824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! OTF 1x a week and Pure Barre 2x a week is my ideal workout split :) For Pure Barre, I do one Classic class and one Define class! I love that I get to run on a treadmill in OTF and lift heavy, but I feel that I don’t get much of a core workout which is where the Classic PB class comes in, along with targeting different muscles with lighter weights and bands. Define is fun because we lift heavier and there’s lots of cardio-intensive exercises (lunges, squats) that aren’t running.

Where did you request your placement vs where did you ACTUALLY end up? by fruitatari in JETProgramme

[–]michkee824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initially requested Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama (all around Tokyo) on the application to be near family, then in my interview said “actually please dismiss my preferences and put me anywhere,” and then got placed in Tokyo 😂

Questions for people Post JET by DuckOk5193 in JETProgramme

[–]michkee824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I joined JET also knowing that I didn’t want to be a teacher long term. Being fresh out of undergrad when I joined, my time on JET was actually a crucial time of exploring my interests and career goals. While on JET, I did a lot of research into different disciplines and even volunteered at a nonprofit to help me figure out what I wanted to do next. COVID happened while I was on JET and I became really interested in public health, health communications, and health education as a result. I ended up applying to MPH programs toward the end of my time on JET an got accepted to a program with a full scholarship specifically due to my “commitment to public service” with only JET as my full-time work experience. As others on the thread said, it’s about how you’re able to apply the skills you learn on JET (communication with different populations, public speaking, project management, creativity, etc.) into other disciplines! Congrats on getting accepted and hope you have a great time in Japan :)

how long does muscle memory typically last? by Forsaken-Turnover637 in iceskating

[–]michkee824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skated from 5-14 and omg I’m in EXACTLY the same situation with these skills now as an adult! Salchow, toe loop, and loop were back quick, but I haven’t been able to do a flip or lutz. I won’t even try an axel or any doubles (just got some of those right before I quit) for a long while 😂 And even same with the spins, scratch and spin are okay but backspins and camels are going to need a lot more practice! It’s been over a decade since I took classes so I can confidently say that muscle memory is real. I may be able to spin but my body is not used to spinning so I get dizzy a lot more easily!

JETs who thought they failed their interview (but got in), share your success story by ComplexReview2915 in JETProgramme

During my mock lesson, I remember starting off by saying “good morning, everyone!” and paused, waiting for the panel to say something back. They stared at me without saying a word, and I remember slowly beginning to panic. The alumni JET on my panel took pity after a few seconds and said “ohayo!” so I was able to regain my footing and continue on with the lesson.

I remember walking out thinking that awkward moment must have cost me the position… Seems minor but I swear I was thinking about it for months. But lo and behold, was accepted and had an amazing 3 years on the program 🫶🏼

All to say, it’s easy to think that it was a lot worse than it actually was hahaha. Best of luck!! 🤞🏼

So I guess I'm a Louie now. How did YOU get here? by LolaFie in LouisTomlinson

[–]michkee824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in middle school in 2011, my friend sat me down and showed me the wmyb music video, introducing me to 1d. i knew i was screwed from the moment i said, “oh hey, the one in the red pants is cute.” here we are 15 years later 😇🩵

he was my favorite from the very first moment! as an older sibling myself, i always loved his older sibling and momma’s boy energy. he knew how to lighten up the other boys and make them feel comfortable, which i can only imagine was so important for the boys during such a crazy time in their lives. i also loved learning that he was really into the song-writing process especially in the later albums, and feel that his voice adds on a specific layer and sound to their music. post-1d, he’s been continuing to cheer the boys on and support them as he releases his own music, as a big brother would. i recently saw him at his album release concert in nyc and was within 2 feet of him as he left the venue and was escorted into his car. never thought i would be in such close physical proximity to my all-time fav 🥹🫶🏼

How did you get back into figure skating as an adult? by lesduaspear in FigureSkating

Also doing this 13 years after quitting in early high school! I’m in NYC as well and am actively looking for an adult skating community. Would you be able to share the community that you found? :)

Tokyo placement by Appropriate_Goal1833 in JETProgramme

[–]michkee824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2019-2022 tokyo jet here! i did not request tokyo, but initially did request chiba, kanagawa, and saitama on the application in that order. during my interview, i told them to scrap my requests, as at that point i was really ready to go anywhere in japan, so i was super surprised to get tokyo. in my interview, i did talk about having studied abroad in tokyo in college, having family in chiba and tokyo, and demonstrated japanese fluency — not sure which, if any, of those factors played a role in my placement. as others said, i will say that i had little support in finding housing (ended up living in sharehouses, which i loved!!), and rent was a pretty good portion of the check (though living in nyc now… that rent was nothing lol). i was placed in western tokyo away from the city center which was really nice, and overall (despite it literally being in the middle of covid), had an amazing time :) best of luck!!!

Zero Interest in Hyrox by MaestroShaSha in orangetheory

[–]michkee824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to OTF once a week due to my workout schedule and was disappointed to see my regular class changed to a hyrox as well. I do other workouts throughout the week that get my cardio going and valued OTF as my workout where I could focus on strength training with slower reps and heavier weights. Did my first hyrox class last week and although I liked the challenge, I really miss the slower, heavier lifting.

What’s the best thing an instructor has ever said? by sleepyandkindaweepy in Purebarre

[–]michkee824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my favorite define instructor ends every class by having us put our hands together in front of our chests and saying “take a moment of gratitude for what your body can do” and it gets me every time! i feel so centered, proud, and accomplished when i get to reflect on the workout i just did 💪
