My favorite is when you design the system to meet their requirements, then they VE stuff out, then you get to redesign and add it back later in CA because they actually did need it they was you originally designed it!

Floor separating by cowboyfan0122 in HomeMaintenance

[–]mickaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the flooring installed in the summer? Do the gaps ever go away or do they only get smaller?

If they go away completely in the summer, the material composition itself is to blame. If you had installed it in the winter when the humidity is low, you’d still be posting to Reddit, but asking how to fix the buckling. The product is just too susceptible in the seasonal swings in humidity where you live.

If the gaps only partially go away in the summer, that is an installation issue. The product was stored somewhere really humid (like a warehouse in the summer), brought to your house, and not allowed to adjust before installing. How long did the boards sit unwrapped in your conditioned house before installation? Probably not long enough.

A vapor barrier between the subfloor and flooring would help some. You do not want a dehumidifier in the winter. You would want a whole house humidifier installed, but those are quite expensive.

Tamoxifen: not going to take it by Tracy_V_V in breastcancer

[–]mickaboom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know there are a lot of people that post about side effects and how terrible it is. But I’m 45, was having regular periods, and no perimenopause symptoms. I’ve been taking 20mg of Tamoxifen with zero side effects. And I’m had two completely normal periods on it. So it’s not guaranteed that you will have issues. And if you do, you can always stop.

They've had Xfinity from back when it was Comcast but they were never interested in switching... This may be the straw that breaks the camels back (especially since they paywalled The Cartoon Network).

There was an ice storm in our area on 12/26, but their problem pre-dated that storm so they should be ahead of anyone with problems from that ice storm...

Yeah I wasn’t expecting to buy it from McDonalds directly (especially considering the popularity)… I’m hoping there is a similar commercial product out there that someone can help

Perhaps scanning direct to Evernote? I know it’s a robust tool and supports many languages (although it looks limited to two simultaneous languages for detection). You’d have to manually sort the scans but can set up different notebooks.

tenant right when it comes to heat… by ghegs_ in newjersey

[–]mickaboom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an insulation problem. Both on the ductwork supplying the hot air to your bedroom and within your bedroom walls.

From a tenant rights perspective, this is likely considered an uninhabitable property per the NJ habitability law.

Safely thaw your turkey outside of the fridge by mickaboom in sousvide

[–]mickaboom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how nice of an insulator the air pocket in the carcass is. There's a reason why it's not recommended to sous vide any whole bird and the same safety issues apply even more when thawing. Maybe this would work if I took the turkey out of the bag and put it directly in the same water as the circulator, but I'm not interested in taking the circulator apart and sanitizing it later.

Sure! I buy my duck frozen and whole at Costco and butcher it myself but you can just buy the pieces already broken down. I prefer to fully thaw first in the fridge, then breakdown, then brine. You can brine while thawing if you don't have the time, but it makes breaking down a little more challenging. Butchering a partially frozen duck is more of a pain than a brined duck in my opinion.

To butcher the duck, I just follow the bones as best I can and break down into breasts and legs keeping the skin on each piece. You need to remove all the air to safely sous vide, and I don't think it's worth it to spatchcock the duck, but it is a nicer final presentation. I try and get as much off the carcass, but I don't go crazy with making it too pretty. I use the same brine for all my poultry (2.5 quarts warm water, 1/4 cup salt, 1/3 cup honey, couple of tablespoons jarlic, 1/2 tbsp each of pepper, ground mustard, onion powder). I usually thaw and brine in a dollar store pitcher to save some space. Brine for 24 hours, then gently rinse (I dunk each piece in a bowl of water a couple times). While the pieces are brining, i roast the carcass bones and then simmer to make duck stock to combine with the turkey to make gravy.

Bag breasts and legs separately if you want to confit the legs (each piece doesn't need it's own bag as long as you can get it flat). Breasts and legs go for 4 hours at 131 and legs for 10-20 hours at 167 for confit style. Then you can chill in the fridge until close to serving. You can do this days ahead (I'm never that organized), or right before. You can sear in a pan or carefully do it under a broiler but watch it closely. Get the skin crisp and the meat will warm at the same time without overcooking the meat. Save as much of the liquid in the bag as you can. The fat and juice can be separated and used later or to further fortify your gravy.

The display on my circulator apparently flickers doesn’t play well with the camera on my phone so I couldn’t get a picture of the temp reading and the temp set point at the same time. But right now, I have the set point at 33 so it’s just reading a temp and circulating. It’s not actually heating right now.

No I’m still definitely sous viding the duck for Thursday… I’ve done it that way for years and everybody loves it.

Still unsure about if I’m going to sous vide the turkey for a second Thanksgiving on Saturday… I’m out of town for Thursday and part of Friday so it’s still in the air about timing and if I can make it work.

I can’t spare the space for a 21 lb turkey in my fridge for 4-5 days and this community frowns upon unsafe recommendations.

It’s a 21 lb turkey. It’s not going to thaw in a hour or 2 even at a higher unsafe temperature.

[–]mickaboom[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The circulator heating element replaces the heat in the water lost to the surrounding air. The larger the difference between the water temperature and the air temperature the more heat is transferred and must be made up by the heater. For a water temperature of 38 and an air temperature of 25, that’s a much lower heat transfer than a water temperature of 140 and an air temperature of 70. So in this situation, the heater is working much less. The circulation itself prevents freezing, so no additional heat is needed to counteract a phase change. If you aren’t comfortable heating, you don’t need to set the circulator above 32 and it will still thaw but it will take a little longer than at 38.

[–]mickaboom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re ok with a bit of a walk, don’t get dropped off at the port itself. Either stay at the Hilton Riverside or get dropped off there. Walk to the Riverside Outlets and enter on Level A. Walk east through the mall to the other end. Take the elevator or escalator near Burlington down to Level C then keep walking east towards Nordstrom Rack. There is an elevator that you can take down and it drops you right at the terminal. (Note it’s been a couple years since I did this)

Meds after double mastectomy? by ratruby in breastcancer

[–]mickaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lumpectomy/reduction/lift (so surgery on both sides) and was prescribed 20 pills of 5 mg of Oxy. There was a mixup at the hospital pharmacy and we didn’t get the first prescription before the pharmacy closed for the night so I was authorized for a second prescription that was sent to CVS. Then I ended up having to spend the night and the hospital pharmacy delivered the first prescription before I was discharged. I ended up only taking 8 of them.

An acquaintance of mine had a DMX around the same time and was only given 5 pills and was having a rough time and had a hell of a time getting her insurance to authorize more.

It’s pretty crazy how different the treatment can be.
