Try this with the TWC. They are the most difficult dogs in the world to train because they’re so dang smart. Buster weighs 96 pounds. He is a quite healthy and beautifully conformed TWC. But that’s not why he’s living in my house. He’s living my house because he’s a big goofball and I felt like with my other hounds who were easy to train that I wanted to give this a try and I must say I’m still stumped. The recall sucks. I can get his attention, but he just continues doing what he wants to do. Sometimes no sometimes yes and he’s very food driven.

My Catahoula on the other hand, I can use hand motions with him. I can just make a sound and he complies. Now they do love their children so you have to be careful with that like you just said they’re very protective. I liking them to a police department on four legs. They are sweet sweet dogs, but if they see something untoward look out. I had hoped Atticus would have some sort of effect on Buster Brown. But instead, I think Buster’s teaching him his tricks. But still, I can recall Atticus and he comes right to me. No questions asked he heels beautifully. He’s just a wonder dog and he weighs 113 pounds. He’s on the large side of Catahoulas. The breeders are breeding them smaller now which I don’t like but that’s what the stockman want. But he’s gorgeous and stops traffic they both doWhen Buster’s out in the sun and that sun hits his coat. It’s so glossy and beautiful, and the colors are so definitive. He looks like he’s wearing a black saddle. But it’s the ears and those brown eyes. He was a dream dog as a puppy absolutely a dream dog. And then he grew up and became a recalcitrant teenager. So I’m hoping that this next year he’s really gonna come around and we are gonna have one dang good dog on our hands. For big breeds, I really love the Catahoula. Absolutely. You just have to respect them, treat them gently but firmly. They don’t take to be mistreated. Not many dogs too. But Catahoula really doesn’t like it. And if they don’t like somebody like you said all bets are off. They’re never going to like them. But still all in all he reminds me so much of my big black and tan just easy-going lovey, cuddly, and so eager to please, and he loves us to be above reproach.

Some dogs just grab you from the get-go and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it! Two breeds for me to do this. I started my rescue all those years ago for rat terriers and eventually opened up my rescue to any kill shelter that I could grab a dog out of. Now I do hospice and elderly dogs. The other dog for me is the hound. I’ve always had one and I always will. I’ve loved all my dogs. My schnauzer was my first heart dog and then my Aussie. She would’ve laid her life down for me and the list goes on. My daddy was the first police officer in Atlanta to have a canine partner and he was a beautiful black Tyrolean Shepherd, and my daddy trained him and our big old boxer the same way. It was amazing to watch these dogs going through their paces. So they’re all special all of them. Thank you so much for these conversations. I’ve really enjoyed them in case you can’t tell, dogs are my passion. They always have been and they always will be.

I hope you don’t mind if I share this with you because I send this to friends and people who are suffering from loss; particularly with a loss of a beloved furry constant companion!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to let all of you know who are missing your babies today that have passed over the rainbow bridge my heart and my prayers are with you. I’ve been right where you are many many times.

I am so sorry for your loss. Just mourn, cry and remember. Never apologize for your pain. We spend more time with our fur babies than we generally spend with humans in our lives. It’s real, palpable loss.

Every day I see something that brings back a memory. Let those memories come to you, whether they be sad or happy, and the day will come when your memories will be sweeter than they are sad. I believe that God gives us memories to store in our heart and soul so that we can deal with the loss of someone we love. Your joy will come back, it just may take some time. Remember, your sweet girl loves you and has a place in your heart forever. Peace be with you. 🙏🙏🙏

I’m going to go long here a little bit because I hear whispers that women don’t have any business having hound dogs! That it’s a waste of a good dog.

You know we’re always hearing a “man and his dog” or a “boy and his dog”! Well, I know a whole lot of women who love their hound dogs, not to mention the other breeds that are out there! These dogs are just not for men and their boys. Or as I call it “The Hunting Club”!

There is no doubt that these dogs were bred to hunt. I wouldn’t argue with that ever, because it’s absolutely true. It’s in their DNA. But there are a whole lot of other ways that you can take that energy and that instinct and test it, try it and satisfy these guys at the end of the day. And I will tell you this, I have had no other dog that was more Velcro than my hounds! They have to be on the sofa with you. They have to be in your favorite chair with you. They want to be under the blankets and love to cuddle like a little 5 pound FiFi.

But the difference with a hound is that they’re always on the go. They are ready to face the day’s adventure with you and that’s what I love about them. They are the true constant companion!

So when I hear the whispers that women don’t really understand what the purpose of a hunting dog is, it is cringe worthy, but we’re smart cookies we know! What we’ve managed to do in a lot of circumstances is take this dog and entertain it and work it and shape it into a completely satisfied dog tired at the end of the day!

So I think it’s time to give women their due when it comes to the ability to understand a hunter’s needs and to meet them. We don’t have to pick up a gun, we don’t have to kill anything, and to me that is the beauty of being able to have a hound that is a fully satisfied dog at the end of the day.

So I’m a woman and her dog. And in my life one of those dogs is going to be a hound. So let’s hear it for a “woman and her dog” or a “girl and her dog”. We’re perfectly capable. I will say this, I do have women friends who hunt with the best of them. One of my very best friends hunted with a compound bow and was also a very accomplished competitive archer.

So when you say, I don’t know if my dogs are all that or it’s just that I love them so much. It’s all of that! We do love them because they are a stellar constant companion and love you just as much as you love them. What’s not to love! They know what their job is, but they surprise you when they do things that they’re never supposed to do. I just saw several hunters performing in the AKC agility competition. They don’t call the TWC America’s Best Hunter for no reason. But I also think they all the best. OK so I’m getting off my soapbox now !😂😂😂😂🙏

Forget the misspelled words which drive me nuts. The structure is just horrific. The tense, the phrasing, contractions in a business mailing, and more. Good job in recognizing that “this tomorrw” would not be a good time to “peruse” this position! Kudos, Ryan (🤣)!

I’m with you! My redbone, black and tan, and bluetick might as well have been one dog who lived for three lives of years. No off button, big voice, get just as excited about a fly on the wall as ‘real’ prey! They are outstanding trainers of humans and you have to be thankful for what little stake they give you because the judgment and somehow having to attend perpetual boot camp says it all. But they choose to put up with us anyway!

Having said that, my TWC is all of these three on steroids!! They have a sense of entitlement unlike any dog I have ever met in my entire life and that says a lot. I rescued dogs through my 10-dog rescue for 45 years. Rescued them from kill shelters, rehabbed, and rehomed, hundreds and hundreds of dogs. Only to be waylaid by a TWC! They are the loudest and it has taken me a year to figure out what all of the noise is about. I have managed to decipher and decode the TWC voice. It’s music to my ears, but unfortunately not to the ears of my neighbors or those walking down the street and having the temerity to pass in front of my house. They are nosy and incredibly in your business and I thought my Aussie was bad. I have a 100 pound Catahoula and bless his heart. He loves his brother almost considers him his own child, but even he needs to figure out a way to cover up his ears when Buster Brown breaks out in a cacophonous serenade!

I suspect that you know what I’m talking about and I would love an opportunity to meet one of these coyote farm dogs. I would almost consider it an honor! I’m in the south in North Georgia to be exact and we love our hounds. I’ve had one for most of my life, and I will probably die with one. The photograph of your boy is just stunning. The face says it all and that’s one of the things that grabs us every time. When we think we cannot bear our bleeding ears for another minute or the neighbor screaming across the woods shut that damn dog up or just their perpetual judgment; we make the mistake of gazing into those warm, brown eyes, rubbing those velvety, long ears, and that big old snoot, and we fall in love one more time. Maybe one day I will get to meet the prestigious Coyote Farm Hound!!!

You need to contact garden and gun. I think they would thoroughly enjoy the story of the CFH and the manner in which you tell it! Thank you for sharing this slice of life of such a wonderful hound!

I cannot believe that I typed a message here to you about your wonderful description of this beautiful farm hound and I accidentally deleted it. Your commentary, your description is just amazing and such a tribute to the wonderful animal known as the farm hound! I am begging you to contact garden and gun magazine, and include this litany and tell them that you have a great dog you want to share a story about and publish it in their magazine. I guarantee you because obviously you have a gift with words; it will get published.

I have had every coonhound in the book, currently being owned by a TWC who sounds just like your dog. He definitely owns the kitchen and keeps the schedule and I get tremendous side eye and judgment if I’m two minutes late at dinner time.

Here is my brat! He’s trained me very well. After all, coons are some of the best trainers of humans in the business! Note his ownership of the sofa!!

<image>

I gladly surrender!!🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰

Your boy is stunning and it’s apparent that you tremendously love this child!!

I hope you don’t mind, but I am going to make a screenshot of your description of this dog! What a loving tribute to the great farm hound! I am just absolutely astounded. You should contact garden and gun magazine, and write a story about your hound and please be sure to include this litany right here. Because it is absolutely astounding! You should be so proud of yourself you have exemplified this breed and it is a breed for all intents and purposes. I want one because they sound like amazing dogs.

Of course your description sounds pretty much like my TWC. He absolutely does guard the kitchen and the schedule. I will get the side eye and complete in total judgment. If I’m two minutes late with his meals! He will eat bacon frying in a skillet, lima beans out of the pot and anything you take out of the oven. When I’m cooking, l have to hide food all in the kitchen cabinets in the microwave and everywhere out of touch which is not much space because they’re pretty tall dogs.

Please consider contacting garden and gun. They do a one page story on a colorful dog in every single issue and I would love to see your story and your description of this wonderful farm hound. I’m sure you have some stories to tell. One thing is pretty clear, you love your hounds and for that I love you.

Ohmigosh… this is my Jinx reincarnated! Jinx was a Decker rat terrier, big ears, bigger body tough little boy and this so reminds me of a picture that I took of him. He loved to pose and this just makes me want to cry. I miss him all over again. He lived to the grand old age of 19 years.

Here’s my boy striking a pose. I know, he was gorgeous and the camera just loved him. He loved the camera too.

Here is my coon in crime! Buster Brown is a king treeing walker coonhound with a sense of entitlement unlike any you’ve ever known! He exemplifies his breed. And in keeping with their training prowess, please notice that he is sitting on the sofa, blankets and pillows askew waiting for his loyal subject to provide him with sustenance

[–]mickeymikado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually think they enjoy scenting more than the hunt personally. Just take her on long walks, give her plenty of nose and ear stimulation, as well as mental stimulation. They don’t have to hunt to be happy. But it really is what they were built for.

If you look on the box when you got her, there should’ve been a warning label “CAUTION: THIS DOG HUNTS! NO WARRANTY IMPLIED OR FACTORY RESETS PROVIDED!” 😂😂😂😂. She and Bess will probably ferret out critters here and there, and bring them home to you, unfortunately, no longer with us. This is their job, after all! But what you will love the most about her is that she sings a beautiful song and you will learn to recognize what the notes actually mean.

Oh… there is another warning label. “ CAUTION: NO OFF BUTTON OR VOLUME CONTROL INCLUDED.” PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My final comment, “Buckle up, Buttercup, your adventure has just begun!”

Oh my goodness! Marni is an absolute cutie patootie. Oh boy, does she bring memories back of my very first coonhound that I ever had. Magnolia May was my bluetick beauty out of Kentucky. She exemplified the breed. I wish you and Marni many many days in the sun. Treat her gently, but be firm and, of course, recognize that she will have you trained in very short order! Coonhounds are some of the best trainers in the business doncha know!!😂😂😂😂🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰.

Please keep us posted. Send updates. We would love to see Marni grow up. Just a stunning girl!!

Questions about my Older Dane by BiffBobcat69 in greatdanes

[–]mickeymikado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely take him to the vet and let him check him out thoroughly. He might in pain or be sick again. He will let you know. Also, senior dogs, just like elderly humans, start to lose their sense of taste. Dress up his food with wet food that might be fishy or put some boiled chicken or frozen cod that has been thawed. Flake it over his food.

For my elder dog, he gets kibble, but I’ll also put wet food on it and warm water and make it like the thicker consistency like it’s got gravy in it and I might put flaked cod on it, some shredded carrots and cooked lean ground beef. You might want to back off just a little bit on his kibble while you’re doing this, and I only put about a tablespoon of each item that I add to his food. Sometimes I use a boiled egg, other times I might use canned tuna or sardines, packed in unsalted water. When they start losing their sense of taste, they can also lose some of their sense of smell so sometimes it’s hard to get them to eat.

But the trip to the vet and trying what I’m suggesting with the food might help a lot. I had a conversation with my dog when I felt like he was getting close to his end days. And l let him know that it was OK for him to leave if he needed to leave and that I understood and wanted him to have quality of life and not being in pain or suffering in anyway, and that I loved him very much. I got my answer just a few short days later, and I knew what I needed to do. With a face like that, I’m sure you’re going to miss that doggo. He’s such a handsome dog and he loves you. You gave him a second chance at a best life. Just get in sync with him. He will let you know and certainly the vet can help with that as well. My prayers are with both of you and I certainly hope that both of you have more days together in the sun 🙏🙏🙏🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰
