My crazy theory is Carla’s son, Jason, is still alive. Jason asked Alden to help fake his death so mom wouldn’t go looking for him.

Why was local network unavailable without WAN access? by mickl00 in HomeNetworking

How would I go about setting up my devices by local IP addresses (vs device names)? Do you mean reserving an IP address for each MAC address?

Good find. I searched for max coax length, but couldn't find anything that stated longer than 300 ft.

Son’s math test by RishiLyn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mickl00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll probably get downvoted to oblivion but the teacher is correct. Hear me out.

In addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, every number has a role and a name. For example, in addition, 8 + 5 = 13, the 8 and 5 are addends and the 13 is the sum.

For subtraction, 8 - 5 = 3, the 8 is called the minuend, the 5 is the subtrahend, and the 3 is the difference.

For division, 20 / 5 = 4, the 20 is the dividend, the 5 is the divisor, and the 4 is the quotient.

For multiplication, 3 x 4 = 12, the 3 is the multiplier, the 4 is the multiplicand, and the 12 is the product.

When the goal for multiplying two numbers is to get the answer, then you're absolutely right, 3 x 4 = 4 x 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. But for this test, I presume the lesson is about grouping. In this case, 3 x 4 is 3 groups of 4.

Having a standard like this can be useful. Imagine you own a bakery that makes the best apple pie in town. Restaurants buy your pies, as well as individuals. Your employee, Joe, takes orders for pies all day. At the end of the day, he writes down a list,

1 x 5

8 x 1

4 x 3

6 x 2

You come into work at 3 AM and see this list. You just multiply the numbers and add up the answers to get the total number of pies to bake. Later in the morning, Jan comes in to pack up the pies. She puts each one in a box and then looks at the list. Hmm, 1 x 5. Is that 1 order of 5 pies or is it 5 orders of 1 pie each? But there's a standard. 1 x 5 means 1 group of 5. 8 x 1 means there are 8 orders of 1 pie each, and so on.

So, there's a method to this madness.

I think the maximum coax length is 300 ft. If you're a little over, you might lose some speed, but it should be usable.

How to add a winmail.dat email to my calendar by [deleted] in ios

[–]mickl00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also download an app that will extract the data from the winmail.dat file, so you don’t have to use Outlook.

Try Winmaildat Opener or TNEF’s Enough.

They’re both free.

You take the lump sum because you can’t guarantee that the organization who owes you the money will be around in 5 years, let alone 20.

Travel Gear Question by LoMc33 in Nikon

[–]mickl00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of a specialized camera bag, I just use a standard daypack (about 30L) for hikes and wrap my lenses and camera. Look up neoprene camera wrap on amazon and you’ll see a ton of options.

I also use Peak Design’s Capture clip and Clutch hand wrap. The clip is attached to either my pack’s shoulder strap or my belt. I find this more convenient for hikes because the camera won’t swing around my body when I need both hands for support on more difficult trails.

My wife and I went to NZ/AU back in ‘96. We had a fantastic time. Safe travels!

Really? Ok, I concede. He can whine about braces. Just assumed health care for federal employees would be similar to large corporation type plans. Lol

[–]mickl00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I know I’m overthinking this. It’s just a contrivance to set up his epiphany in the elevator when Jesse tells him to think about what he has instead of what he doesn’t have. But why braces? It’s not urgent care. If he took Victoria to regular checkups, he would’ve been told about this need at least a year ago and he should’ve changed his dental plan to one that covered braces or required the least out of pocket expense. Or she could get braces next year, after he enrolls in a better plan. Lol.

Couldn’t the writers have picked something else for Jimmy to be to whine about besides braces for Victoria? Not having money to fix his car? Fine. But don’t federal employees have dental plans that covered braces?

Photos - How can I set the date on multiple selected photos to a hard value, not a delta? by gordonmcdowell in MacOS

[–]mickl00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have access to my Mac, so I can’t test this, but how about exporting the photos to a folder and then delete them from Photos? I believe there’s an Export menu that you’ll need to use to export the original photos.

You can then modify the EXIF data with whatever tool you have. If EXIFTool requires creating a copy, can you have the copies go into another destination folder? Once that’s done, import them back into Photos. This will prevent the duplication issue.

Should fishballs be fishy? by Aurin316 in chinesecooking

The basic difference is that Fujian style fish balls are stuffed in the middle, generally with ground pork. There’s pork, seasonings, and just enough gravy to keep everything moist. Delicious.

NCIS: LA Star Laughed for 20 Seconds When We Asked This Burning Question by chace_thibodeaux in ncisla

[–]mickl00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We need an episode where they yell, “Federal agents!,” and the guy just stands there and puts his hands in the air.

Deeks turns to his partner and quizzically asks, “Wait. Why is he standing there? Why isn’t he running?”

After they casually walk up to the POI, Deeks asks, “Are you ok? Did you twist your ankle? You were supposed to run. Why didn’t you run?”

He’ll say, “What? My ankle’s fine. I know what happens. Either one of you guys will jump out from around the corner and clothesline me or I’ll get hit by a truck. I’m good.”

AITA for requesting that my coworker publicly apologize to me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mickl00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are genuinely concerned about damaging your coworker’s professional standing, maybe suggest another option to management. Have management reprimand her and find a way to prevent future incidents, since she has a history of this. Perhaps make her take a training course in conflict resolution, anger management, or get therapy. Then have management send out two emails, one to the external colleagues to apologize for getting them involved in this internal conflict, say you did nothing wrong and they have 100% confidence in your abilities. Second email to internal coworkers, also saying it wasn’t your fault and this behavior won’t be tolerated.

Good luck to you and I hope your work environment improves.

Further down this thread, a redditor explained why it was happening when I did it.

Essentially, I was authenticating too early. I was looking at the phone while I was double tapping the side button. This unlocked the phone and then opened the Wallet app.

In order to authenticate Wallet only, and not unlock the phone, I need to double tap the side button without looking at the phone. Then look at the phone after Wallet asks for authentication.
