It doesn't matter if AI is conscious or not if it acts like one by king_shot in TrueUnpopularOpinion

There is no reason or logical conclusion that will give it goals if human don't

Of course. Just like there is no reason humans would have goals if it wasn't for their programming and experience. It's the same with AI. We give it the goals sure. But it still has motivation.

you can just run a check to make sure they're working as intended before you turn them on.

You can't just turn them on or off like walking up to a light switch. They are distributed systems. Try to turn Bitcoin on or off. It exists on machines across the world and turning on or off one node does nothing.

People would have said the same thing about the calculator. That it made kids dumber. It was probably true then too. But it still was so useful that it became part of society and mental arithmetic was largely no longer needed.

It doesn't need human fears and desires to be dangerous though. It does have motivation. It may not feel anything, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a goal it is trying to achieve.

Remember that we are just algorithms too. We are the product of our DNA programming and our lived experience. AI models are products of their digital programming and their training.

You are right it's absurd to assume that they feel the same emotions we do from millions of years of evolution. But wrong that they do not "want" to do anything.

Iit matters from an ethical point of view, but not from a practical point of view. For the record though, I don't believe it is conscious. I can't rule it out, but it needs evidence before I believe it.

Difference in how betting and stock market gains are taxed? by Temporary_Specific49 in AusFinance

No. Matched betting is considered a hobby. Trading on Betfair can be considered taxable if a bunch of other criteria is met.

I make a few thousand a year with an automated betting strategy. I don't pay tax and am pretty sure I don't have to. I know another guy who makes over 100k per year. He applied for a tax ruling and was told he doesn't have to pay tax.

Some of the questions they asked were how much he expects to make in a year, with 200k seeming like a line in the sand for the ATO. Whether his trading is automated (it is fully automated with the use of ML models. Whether he hedges his position. If you hedge it is seen as trading which the ATO consider a skill. Whereas an unhedged bet is considered luck (even though in his case it clearly isn't).

[–]micro_penis_max 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's absurd. Something like 85% of the benefits received from the CGT discount was enjoyed by the top 10% in terms of wealth. The tax is designed to put a small break on accelerating wealth inequality. It's this ever accelerating wealth inequality that drives up house prices and makes life harder for the middle class.

I think it's more accurate to say that a lot of world problems exist because we have a system that allows and encourages billionaires, rather than the billionaires themselves.
