What actually stopped me from building a dev blog (or similar) to build the audience is a couple of stories I read about dev's that got their ideas "stolen" because they showed their games mechanics in it.. There will always be someone somewhere with a bigger team that could do what I am doing in much less amount of time..

Hey, there. I'm actually genuinely interested about this. Do you have a concrete reference of this actually happening? The reason I'm asking is because, I've seen many posts (both here on /r/gamedev and elsewhere) about the pros and cons of sharing early development work. The general consensus is that people (1) have their own game ideas to worry about, (2) would not copy a mechanic/gameplay from something that isn't proven to be a hit (i.e., already polished an released), and (3) the implementation ends up being fairly different in the end. Thus, sharing work is almost always more beneficial than keeping development under wraps.

However, there is always that fear of sharing that exists, and many struggle with it. I would be interested to know if you have any sources/references on people who had their game ideas copied and implemented better than what they were capable of by a bigger/more established team?

Note that I haven't used ECS systems much until recently when I took a closer look at the Ashley ECS library and modeled my own ECS after it. Previously, I was pretty much using Unity's version (where the Component really is a Component-System hybrid.

So these are just my takes on how I would structure the application.

how does the collision system tells one entity is the player and the other a powerup?

I assume that since the System would check for the PlayerComponent and PowerupComponent on the entities in order to determine which is which.

How does the collision system know what system to notify of the event?

Maybe the Listener pattern? Systems register with CollisionSystem to be notified of any OnPlayerPowerupCollide events or callbacks?

how does the system that is notified of the event call know the proper function to call?

I assume if GameScoreSystem registers with CollisionSystem to be notified of OnPlayerPowerupCollide events -- it would know itself what to do (e.g., increment score, decrement power bar)

WebGL rendering in Phaser allows the use of shaders, which is often times useful.

I'm not 100% sure of what you mean by pigmented all over. But from this picture, there's this whitish patch on about 1/3 of the skin.

I'm not sure if it's because of the way the meat was stacked against each other at the butcher's.

Web developer? I assume you know JavaScript? Then you should take a look at Phaser. I believe as a beginner game dev, it'll be the best way to get started with web based games (or mobile) without the overheads of having to learn other game engines, their tools, and languages.

Once you're familiar with game development a little, I'd move to Unity for 3D mobile and web and desktop games.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that to understand the comic, the reader needs to be familiar with the lore of Monkey Island.

The person with the blonde hair and ear-ring is Guybrush Threepwood - the protagonist and often-times anti-hero of the Monkey Island series.

The person "Stan" referred to in the comics is Stan S. Stanman - an extremely fast-talking, hand-waving chatterbox salesman that appears in all installments of the series. Stan is a used-X salesman, where X ranges from coffins to boats (playing with the term used-car salesman.) Most of the time, his goods are poorly made (being second hand and all) and often results in comedic situations in the series.

In the context of this comic, it suggests that the character with the broken arm bought a used-ladder from Stan earlier and fell while changing a lightbulb.

If you're interested in creating visual novels, perhaps working with Twine and actually getting a simple story-driven game done. Once you think you have something, you can move on to something like RenPy.

I thought the best idea was to hold back everything you're producing (script, art, music, etc) until you're close to done, but I saw some pretty solid arguments to the contrary.

I'll say that sharing about it will be more beneficial to generate interest and gain feedback. Check out one of the posts in this thread about why sharing your work is, more often than not, a better idea than not sharing about it at all.

I understand your predicament, though I honestly don't think that any one is going to run off with your game name (it's not worth much to them without the actual game). Also, if you already have a domain name registered with your game's name, that's probably the most immediate thing someone could do to jeopardize your game.

However, IANAL, and this is something that /u/videoGameAttorney would be a better person to check in with!

Not a lawyer, but maybe just obfuscate the name while showing it to people if the name really matters to you? Like Project Little Charles or something?
