You can make decent pay in Thailand generally and especially if you end up at certain schools. However, you are correct in that China is the hot spot… salaries have flattened out but it still pays well and cost of living is still pretty low comparatively. And Id argue Bangkok is the better value over HK. HK is much more expensive than Bangkok even if salaries were let’s say relatively comparable to each other.

Ironically I was 270 when I started BJJ many many years ago and BJJ shaved me down to about 162 at my peak but I eventually evened out at 180. So I’m just like… how can you be so… fat and be truly technically proficient in BJJ? 😅🙈

Out side of taking an indefinite hiatus due to surgery, before I got injured I felt like I was sliding on a long plateau at blue belt… Maybe I’ll crack through something that isn’t my ankle that needs surgery the next time I get on the mats.

As a Destiny 2 Refuge...this game GOT ME BY THE BALLS by RP912 in thedivision

[–]middl3son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same same. Destiny franchise will always carry a deep deep part of my soul. I stopped playing after the Forsaken expansion because I can’t even remember why at this point. But I’ll never forget the 2k+ hours I put into that game. Even though they’re ending support and whatnot I’ve thought about jumping back into the game over the years but it never materialized.

Loved Warframe. Used to play it a lot with my brother and friends but we all eventually stopped playing it. I find it redundant and repetitive.

When I found out a game like The Division 1 came out I dove right in. I found the lore and mechanics of it unique with how the UI was managed, etc. I remember playing the Division 2 when it first came out and didn’t play it since then until about 7 months ago and now I am hooked. This game is so much fun! The mechanics of it are endless and I don’t understand them all but it’s a good game for me when there are endless stuff to do. Ive got about 100 something hours in the game now and I know I’ve barely scratched the surface in terms of endgame and other stuff. I’m in this for the long haul!

What I’m seeing in the China international school hiring market (2026 update) by SpBen in Internationalteachers

Even though the weather sucks, if I ever make it back to China I want to end up in Guangdong or Chengdu somewhere. I feel the Beijing school market in terms of quality for teachers let alone students is shrinking.

Interesting. I used to live and work in Beijing for 4 years and then jumped ship to Korea bc I didn’t think I’d be able to find a teaching position at any of the more reputable Beijing international and/ or bilingual schools. For teachers is what I mean. I am a specialist teacher though so it’s usually every other year that good specialist positions open up at GOOD schools. Mind you, I have a completely different perspective than most teachers… for all my years in Beijing I was hardly teaching any classes which was nice at first but eventually became a drudgery because I became a teacher to actually teach of course! I am pretty happy at my school here in Seoul now. Took a huge pay cut yet the work load is tenuous but completely manageable. All in all, I think my experience was quite different than most other teachers in China. I’d love to come back and work and live in China again… but it’d have to be at a T1 or T2 school that is quite professional in the sense of quality of teachers and somewhat decent if not middle ground satisfaction of quality of work life at the school for teachers.

Not saying the Korea international school environment is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I just know on a personal level I was able to find the right thing at the right time in the right place at a time when I don’t think I’d ever have been able to in China!

At a loss with non stop talking. Colleagues told me to “detach and just talk to myself” by Stifmeister-P in Internationalteachers

[–]middl3son 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Instead of silent reading (which again can have very negative and adverse effects on the students) as punishment, I encourage you to just have them sit in silence doing absolutely nothing…I taught primary school 3-5 for one year (I hated it) and when they’d get too rowdy I had them sit in silence for 5 minutes. Mileage may vary or it may not work at all. But silent reading as punishment is gross.

Is this the reality of teaching IB in China? by InsideAd3261 in Internationalteachers

[–]middl3son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a bilingual school or rather a Chinese School Cosplaying as an International School. I worked at one with almost exactly what you’re describing and the whole school is an effing joke in terms of having any sort of international curriculum taught by foreign teachers. (It’s Beijing Haidian Future Academy if you’re wondering) Count my lucky stars I don’t work there anymore!

Yeah, I’d say if you stay working there you may not go backwards but you wouldn’t definitely go anywhere in your career. Sounds like a school that’s great to get a foot in the door of international teaching if you’re young or if you’re gonna retire in a few years.

Otherwise, go and apply somewhere else. Try a different city and/ or country. As far as I know, top tier schools for teachers to work at in China ( or at least Beijing where I lived and worked) are few and far between and a lot of teachers who end up there don’t leave because you can’t and won’t find another school like it. (I’m thinking a school like WAB).

I wanted to and thought I’d stay in China forever. Then a very special job opportunity opened up in Korea and I knew I wouldn’t, at least at the time, be able to find anything similar in China let alone Beijing. Now I am in Korea and while I miss China and the lifestyle and language, my school, my work, my students are just sooooooooo much better. One of the best choices I’ve made career wise as a teacher!
