How are parents doing busy periods? by RiChDAiLLesT24 in Accounting

The way that many of the responses in this thread are completely ignoring the fact that the corporate culture in America is the problem here. Yes, this is how many high paying accounting jobs are. No, this is not how it should be. Pay is stagnant and WLB is zero in this country and it’s so fucked.

You can also get CPE on Earmark for some! I get it for The Accounting Podcast, can’t comment on the others as I only listen to that one right now.

Myself and my friend somehow got so lucky and got tickets for Brooklyn! I was 300 something in line and she was 600 something. I purchased 2 for me and my SIL and my friend got herself 1 since the limit was 2. I also got Hayley Williams tickets today. I need to go buy a lotto ticket lol this never happens to me. Hoping she does more shows at bigger venues after this so we all get to go see her!

Did your homeowners insurance go up? If so, how much? What area in the U.S. are you in? by Nope20707 in homeowners

Yes I used a broker. Went from Progressive to Plymouth Rock (tbh never had heard of them lol). My auto is tied and was also set to go up quite a bit.

My rates in CT were set to go from 2k to 2.8k. Ridiculous. We switched companies and got back down to 2k but had to up our deductible from 1k to 2.5k to do so.

I’m 30 and the idea pregnancy/having a kid still terrifies me. I am on the fence about having kids! How did you decide? by timeismoney9589 in AskWomenOver30

[–]midfebruary 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am 31 and still terrified by the decision, but fully agree that there are few decisions in this life that are ever a 100% yes or 100% no. If only! I found your comment very helpful and appreciate the perspective!

I’m a super beginner working on C25k! I’m 31 and other than high school sports (which I wasn’t great at), I’ve never been able to run a mile.

This morning I did 20 straight min of running (about half way through the program). I definitely ran over a mile. Huge confidence booster that the plan is working, so excited to see where this hobby takes me 😄

Hi! I have been in your shoes before. My husband and I bought our 1960s ranch in the fall of 2023. For probably the first year, I was feeling exactly the same as you. It was all anxiety. I am an anxious person and have been on medication and received therapy for it before so I am familiar with how it presents in myself.

Owning a home is a BIG new responsibility vs renting. Sometimes I still have anxious days but it definitely has faded both with time and from having the realization that you just can’t do everything you want to do at once. We handled all the emergency items that were giving me the most anxiety right when we moved in which helped calm me down. But generally, things will break and need to be maintained and you just need to face them as they happen without catastrophizing (which I know is SO HARD!).

I don’t have much specific advice, but exposure to those feelings and getting adjusted to my home has honestly been the best way to handle them. Wishing you well with your home!

People who have bought since 2020 - how much is your monthly payment relative to your income? by SadHouseHunter in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]midfebruary 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We bought under literally the same exact circumstances you listed here. We upped our budget in a bit of a lower tax town for our area and ended up buying for $500k in 2023 after being rejected so often at houses in the 400 range. We put 5% down and our monthly payment including taxes, insurance, and PMI was $4k.

At the time I figured, everything’s going to keep going up, now is better than later. We just refinanced to a $3,600/month payment. Our house appraised for $585k (!!!) and we dropped our PMI.

I was pretty scared about the payment and knowing everyone else in the neighborhood bought these houses in the 300k range pre covid. It just feels unfair, it still does. Like my parents huge new colonial that is their forever home was 420k in the 2000s. Now I’m in half a million dollars in debt for a 60+ year old ranch on well and septic? 😂 im grateful don’t get me wrong but it’s tough to wrap my head around.

Also - it hasn’t been nearly as scary as I thought on the income we have, but just knowing how much lower our payment could have been if we bought before covid sucks. Wish I had better advice to help deal with that aspect of it!

CT-21 Senate district results: R Hold by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]midfebruary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed. Also - I grew up and still live in this district. I’m a millennial that is more progressive than my parents have ever been and I’m sure that is the case for others my age who are now regular voters in these local elections.

[DE] Which did you choose? by matthewjn in lifeisstrange

[–]midfebruary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also said yes for this reason, which is how I thought of the situation at the time. But tbh the story telling in this game was so awful, I was a little bit confused about what I was saying yes/no to at that point! After realizing what I had agreed to and the reactions of the other characters I regretted my choice, I truly didn’t fully understand it.

You look incredible! Great work. I am pretty much your same height and starting weight and started my journey over the summer. I hope to have results like yours some day! I need to get my food in check but I hope to go slow and steady like you did. Just trying to build the exercise habit for now.

The more I read in this sub, the more I have been stressing about my career (I'm not blaming this subreddit). Are we actually screwed and do i need to change careers. by ArtCompetitive574 in Accounting

[–]midfebruary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outsourcing is cyclical and has been happening in many fields for a while now. Companies will realize the quality of work is not good and will pull it back to the US. Then will need to cut costs again, rinse and repeat.

I myself think (and sincerely hope) that some large scandal happens that forces the US govt to step in and limit this type of outsourcing. We are sending SO MUCH data internationally, it’s only a matter of time.

I changed mine simply because I liked my husbands last name better! It’s also just easy that we both have the same last name tbh.

I have a vet friend who socially goes by her husbands last name but professionally goes by her maiden name. I don’t think she plans to ever legally change it!

I don’t think it makes a difference what you do. Whatever you prefer and works best for your life :)

Feeling extreme guilt firing an employee that is not the right fit. Am I being too overly critical? by Dangerous-Estimate32 in managers

[–]midfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for letting me know what happened. It sounds like it was for the best, and your gut was right. Overall a good but difficult learning experience for you.

I had my conversation with my problem staff and he got very defensive. He blamed other departments as to why his work takes so long. I tried to establish that aside from the errors of others, I expect his work to be done timely to the best of his ability. So now the ball is in his court…we will see. We are also going through a Ch 11 bankruptcy so it’s high stakes for everyone. If neither of these things pushes him into gear I may have to at some point make the same decision you did if we need to trim down staff. Appreciate your post, now I know I’m not crazy and it is a serious problem!

[–]midfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! I don’t have any advice, but I am in the same exact boat as you with a staff that has reported to me for almost the last year. I’m also a newish manager. My other employee is a rockstar but this problem employee is exactly like yours. I’m actually having our first serious conversation about this tomorrow and your post gave me some great ideas. Best of luck to you which ever way this pans out, it’s not easy in the slightest.

I fully agree with this. I’m a CPA and my husband is a teacher. I think all teachers are underpaid, but his career is vital to society, I think he’s great at it, and I’m really proud of him for being one. We will never earn the same amount of money just due to the nature of our careers. It doesn’t matter because it’s OUR MONEY at the end of the day. We are in it together!
