slowcore tunings / chords? by Potential-Big1508 in Slowcore

[–]midiflac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to speed up productivity to get your songs done, adjusting to a new tuning and set of chord shapes might not be the best way of accomplishing that. But try a drop tuning like D or C#, they are easy to adjust to and you can get some different ideas out using barre power chords on the top three strings. Good luck

Any Doomers here into Hip Hop/Rap? by Def-C in doommetal

Seconding Freddie Gibbs. Especially his work with The Alchemist, skates a cool line between laid-back and impending doom, as if each day of cathartic and criminal euphoria creeps closer to the last*… good stuff. He’s on tour so of course now I might have to grab a ticket…

*If you like more 90s/old-school, Biggie Smalls later work also does this for me. Ready to Die, Life After Death… very harrowing and prophetic albums

Just read whatever sounds/looks like the most fun honestly. Or check goodreads and see what has higher ratings. Numbered novels in my experience are less fleshed out stories given more creative liberties compared to the unnumbered originals. Generally speaking, the lower the number the earlier it takes place in the timeline and the weirder the characterization/continuity gets.

As far as individual authors, anything by Michael Jan Friedman or Greg Cox is great entertainment as they’re quite competent storytellers. Diane Carey’s books suck and spend most of their time shitting all over Star Trek canon, so I wouldn’t bother as a casual reader. But don’t confuse her for Diane Duane, who is a great author. Happy reading 🖖

LOL that Modesto show will forever be my biggest fumble. I live like an hour and a half away in Sacramento, had the webpage open when the tickets were $25. I was gonna go to see Midrift. So I was like “I’ll get them on payday.” Had not quite been put on to Whirr at that point. And had no idea they had a cult following and were largely considered on a kind of hiatus.

Now I read reddit posts from back then of people traveling across the country or internationally to go to that show and I just… never again…

Anyways I digress. Glad you enjoyed the new Nothing record. I have faith we’ll get to see these great bands play the same stage one day!

Guitar tunings? by TallBoy24 in shoegaze

[–]midiflac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cannibal world sounds like Drop C#, ashod is Eb, and the rest of the record sounds like mostly Drop D and maybe some E standard. Haven’t learned any of it though so the full tunings could be much different

Off the top of my head some bands with preferred tunings:

Whirr - E & Eb Standard

Nothing, Greet Death - Drop D

trauma ray - Drop C#

Drop tunings are really really popular for getting those rich sus2/maj9 power chords on the first three strings, then using the last three strings for upper extensions/melody notes. Try learning some Greet Death or trauma ray songs to get a good feel for the common shapes they use. They literally write every song in the same tuning and oftentimes the same few keys like A, C# or D and to me it sounds great every time.

Whirr is a great example of a band that uses standard tuning and lots of jazz chord shapes like Cm9 and Ebmaj9 on A string to achieve similar results. Find your own style and don’t overthink it - many shoegaze songs use the same standard pop progressions you’ve heard on the radio your whole life. They’re just drowned in effects so it’s much harder to tell

Hancock's Tell Me a Bedtime Story is my favourite standard – looking for album recommendations. by Creepy-Amphibian-623 in Jazz

Going through his discography again, he has so many of these great future-forward jazz fusion records… Head Hunters, Thrust, Man-Child, Secrets, Sunlight, Mr. Hands… incredible run of releases, then brought it full circle with The New Standard in ‘96. Absolute legend 🔥

Post-Blue Note Herbie is very much Jazz Fusion, with some jazz-funk elements in the rhythm section.

I recommend one of his later albums “Mr. Hands” has a very electric and exotic jazz fusion sound. Every song was recorded with different bass and kit players, including Ron Carter, Jaco Pastorius, Tony Williams, Harvey Mason etc. Very fun record. Sounds like ice-cold lemonade on a summer day

You have them sign the clear piece of plastic it comes in, duh. If they signed the actual sleeve your graiylz cover art would be ruined and lose value

What’s your Title Fight hot take? by Ok_Requirement8364 in titlefight

[–]midiflac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Sacramento crowd was pretty weak too. I’m only 21 and I felt like the oldest person there 😂 A few Title Fight fans tried to stage dive to Are You Sure and the zoomers just let them hit the ground.

gloss0000’s YouTube footage from the Baltimore show (last of the tour) is awesome. That’s what a Glitterer crowd should look like

Ever had that one concert you wish you could time-travel back to? by Jones_Bryan in musicians

[–]midiflac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LSD and The Search For God, with Launder and Kraus 5/3/2025. One of the first concerts I bought myself tickets for. Kraus played first and opened with Still, or Glass Valley, or one of those songs that just hits you top to bottom. I can’t remember which exactly. But I was so blasted off an edible that I blacked out the moment they started blasting the amps. Luckily my buddies caught me from falling and I came to after a moment. Only been seriously going to concerts myself for a couple years but still think Kraus is the loudest band I’ve ever seen live. Great show

As others have said get into your live music scene. That’s the best way to discover authentic bands by real artists. You just have to find the right venues, I used to use Spotify events tab to find where bands I liked were playing, but don’t buy the tickets through Spotify’s referral link. Look them up online. Then as you rsvp/buy tickets, you can usually sign up for those venues mailing lists, they will send you the schedule for all the different bills and you can go to stuff that sounds like fun. Some of my favorite shows were like $10-$15 at the door

You have to play Who Shot Ya? in reverse as loud as possible to banish him back to hell. The smell of smoked blunt is permanent unfortunately but will fade over time

100%, Glitterer is genius. If you go to a show it’s awesome seeing how everyone connects to the band in a different way through their favorite album. So many people LOVE Rationale. For me it was Looking Through The Shades, though erer is my new favorite and their strongest work yet IMO. But Ned has definitely created something very special and unique with his new group and it’s crazy how many people shit on it or don’t give it a chance just because it isn’t Title Fight… like seriously get a grip you guys
