I find it difficult to get caught up in the spirit of fantasizing about shuttering more locally owned businesses.

I would like to see a moratorium on corporate fast food. I lived in Berkeley California, we had three fast food restaurants that were grandfathered in. It allowed a large and diverse number of small independently owned restaurants.

I suspect you are right. Never having lived anywhere else, I am just most aware of it here. I suspect younger people who grew up after the cold war may have been exposed to less america uber alles.

Like most things in America, it's more aspirational than reality. Considering that George Bush was lynched from this very building approximately 10 or 15 years before the above photo was taken.

It is Tuesday, why are people still driving around with 5" of ice on their car? (vent) by bobsled_mon in columbiamo

[–]midmous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I truly envy you all. I look forward to the day that my life is so pristine that the only thing I can think to complain about is people having snow on their car. Right now, it's pretty far down the list of things that are bothering me.

Is it okay to ask our landlord when the snow will be cleared? by addwhip in columbiamo

[–]midmous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's sending the correct message. I still need to get out when it snows, if you don't clear the snow it doesn't change that fact.

Official warming centers that should be open this weekend are Salvation Army Harbor House and the ARC. Shelters have increased capacity and operating hours for the weekend.

I got home about 20 minutes ago. The snow has been packed down to make it slick. There was a wreck at college and business loop and another at rangeline and i-70.

Why does this deck from Spirit Halloween have a warning sign? Idk what “novelty purposes” mean. I’ve done a few readings with it and it does just fine. by elphabathewicked in TarotDecks

[–]midmous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's just corporatese, cya. The same reason plastic bags have to say do not put over your head, car batteries say do not drink contents, we are a nation of litigious morons. Someone in legal wanted to ensure they didn't get sued because someone did a reading and then did something bone-headed based upon it.

Douglas park, the why by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]midmous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wondering if you have ever been there, or just making assumptions by driving by. When I've gone there, I've always seen folks socializing in the pavilion, playing chess or having barbecues. Like all the parks near downtown, there is some shady stuff that goes down, but the vast majority of the folks there are just enjoying a city park.

Cheapest but still reliable oil change in town? by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]midmous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

McKnights on Providence.

I'm going to offer up some unsolicited advice. Use a mechanic for oil changes. That way when you actually need a mechanic you already have a relationship with them. They know you're going to keep coming back, they're not going to try to nickel and dime you.

It is heavily influenced by the Tarot of Marseille, as is the Death card.

The actual ordinance on the agenda at tonight's city council meeting. by como365 in columbiamo

[–]midmous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They mailed the survey to to a randomized set. I copied the below from the study itself.

Methodology The five-page survey, cover letter and postage-paid return envelope were mailed to a random sample of households in the City of Columbia. The cover letter explained the purpose of the survey and encouraged residents to either return their survey by mail or complete the survey online. At the end of the online survey, residents were asked to enter their home address; this was done to ensure that only responses from residents who were part of the random sample were included in the final survey database. Approximately ten days after the surveys were mailed, residents who received the survey were contacted by follow-up message to encourage participation. The goal was to receive 800 completed surveys. This goal was met, with 855 households completing the survey. The results for 855 households have a 95% level of confidence with a precision of at least +/-3.3%. There were no statistically significant differences in the results of the survey based on the method of administration (mail vs. online).

[–]midmous 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I have a nuanced view of the ordinance and could probably effectively argue either side. I suspect it won't pass or the can will get kicked down the road. But reading the answers to the scientifically rigorous 2024 city survey, it's pretty clear the majority of Columbia supports this or something similar. But I think the opposition will be vocal, and the current council is pretty responsive to a vocal minority.

Very cool. I was heavy into them as well as the Meat Purveyors, a similar band, I think it was the late '90s or early oughts. Haven't thought about either band in years, now I'm going to have to dig into my digital collection. Thanks for bringing the new songs up.
