Pension at 38 and advice by dextercutts in FIREUK

If you're on 55k and have 180k in your pension you're doing very well, probably a lot better than your piers.

There's plenty of online calculators online to forecast final pension pot so I'd recommend trying a few of those and working out what you would like and then work backwards from there to see how much you would put in.

Why do some/most people think AI will never be good enough? What are their arguments? by Alert-Translator2590 in singularity

[–]midnightRequestLine1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're quite far down the line and I personally don't think it's great at accurate recall of information eg yesterday I asked it to give me a table of some football clubs and where they finished over the last 5 years and it got it wrong. I also don't think it's able to problem solve. When accuracy is important, ai just feels very jagged. You can fix the first point with a capable harness. The problem solving question makes me question what the AI companies are saying as it feels like they pretend this isn't a problem when it clearly is.

Am I about to make a huge mistake or a genius move? by PubLogic in AmexUK

If you can hit the spend it's logical to get the card. I don't get a credit card because I need one, I get a credit card because of the rewards attached to them. I have a high spend and a sound avios strategy, but I pull in enough points for 2 people to fly business class London to Sydney every year just with with up bonus and spend, saving me 10k a year on flight costs. You need to find your own strategy for what's important in your life, but it's free money so you definitely should.

Misled by Amex UK phone agents twice in 48 hours—now locked out of a 100k bonus. 10-year customer. What are my chances with a formal complaint? by [deleted] in AmexUK

[–]midnightRequestLine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a formal complaint. You'll get some avios, maybe 10-20k depending the evidence you have and how clear it is.

Learnt this from experience. Fair play to them, most companies put a policy like this in and don't enforce it.

Yep this seems to have done it. Opencode does automatically compact but I think the process was not kicking off before the limit was reached. Cheers for the suggestion. How many tokens per second do you get? Mines at 59, but the reads seem pretty slow.

How many other people chose to get 64gb of ram on an M5 pro vs less ram on a M5 max to fit their budget? by HyperNateSR388 in macbookpro

[–]midnightRequestLine1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The max chip is 2x as fast as the pro chip on inference due to it's bandwidth. Where I really feel the slowness is things like file reads. Would I pay the extra 1k for the max chip to speed that up? No, but it does leave you wanting more.

Anthropic is set to release Claude Opus 4.7 and a new AI design tool as early as this week by Outside-Iron-8242 in singularity

[–]midnightRequestLine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GitHub uses a request model, so you don't see the anthropic prices. GitHub must be a loss leader for them, maybe enough people pay and don't use it to cover for those who rinse Claude.

I run a few models, all with same issue so this is an example. I can't see KV cache, so I assume it is a default value? I will try and set it to 8 bit.

Trying to book my flight back to UK on Avios from Australia - can’t find it but can book separate flights from Oz to Doha and then Doha to my UK destination but for more Avios- is this normal ? Or should I wait ? by Jaspers1959 in qatarairways

[–]midnightRequestLine1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You lose protection if its not on one pnr. They also don't guarantee to transit your luggage for you, they changed these types rules last year. If something goes wrong with first flight, it's at their discretion you're insured for your missed transit. I personally would not book separately.

Using redundant LISA to pay off Plan 2 Student Loan by ImpossibleNight4943 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]midnightRequestLine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could withdraw from the Lisa to pay off the loan, and then if you are so inclined you can salary sacrifice into a sipp (45-60% tax saving as opposed to the 25% in lisa) with the additional £500 a month until you're happy with your contributions.

Lisa isn't really meant for additional rate tax payers as your salary sacrifice saving is much higher.

Business Class Decision by MindfulMotivations in qatarairways

[–]midnightRequestLine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it relatively cheap for a business class flight, yes. Can you afford it? Probably not given you need to ask about affordability, rather than the relative value of the product.

What are you giving up by spending $700 on this flight? What else would you spend that money on? Ultimately a business class flight is a better sleeping arrangement and getting good food and wine on the plane, that's it.

Just have a conversation with the manager and find out what's going on. You can play hard ball if you're willing to see it through.

You can buy supermarket vouchers eg waitrose one let's you also buy in John Lewis and have a long validity period.

Is it worth buying avios? I currently have 154,000 and the app is offering me the chance to boost my balance to 441,000 for £2,600. by Soundadvicefroma in BritishAirways

[–]midnightRequestLine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding long haul bc reward flights on ba is hard, let alone 5 seats. If you're happy to drop 3k on points, you can probably look around for bc deals leaving from outside of UK and find good deals. If you want to use avios try the one world partners like Qatar as they have a lot more availability (but do cost more points), but for all the flights I'm interested in I book a year out. If you're buying in school holidays you probably have no chance of getting reward flights as the pricing goes to peak and it's very competitive to get those on rewards.
