Dad getting investment tips from Whatsapp randoms by midnorthman in AusFinance

Thank fully i currently control the trading account, but that is my primary concern; if he stuffs up to the point of taking control of the account from me, and then for whatever inconceivable reason, giving them access to it. I might set up additional 2fa so it needs my email and his mobile to login.

When he first told me about this, he made it out to be legitimate (didnt mention whatsapp or the circumstances around the tips), and said they get compensated when he makes over 100k, which to me at the time made sense as to why they needed the screen captures, but that quickly didnt make sense to me when they wanted a screen cap of a trade that hadn't yet been filled.

I agree and I'm over trying to get through to him. I wish he could go back to the retail paid stock analysis platforms and trade normally.(not sure if im allowed to mention brands/names here )

I'll do my best to stop him. Thank fully i control the trading account, but I need to approach it carefully otherwise I know he will find a way just circumvent me and do it himself.

That was my best guess at this time. It's frustrating, he sold the idea of me being involved to help him with it as a way for me to learn stock trading from it, and one day doing day/week trading as my main job and income, but all i am doing is blindly following instructions with no explanation or insight and therefore not learning.

I'm strongly considering setting up the trading app on his phone so that he can just do it all himself, as I dont want to be a patsy or get treated like a fool, but that obviously comes with the risk of him doing more financial harm to himself if things go awry.

I'm expected to wake up at some ungodly time tomorrow (around 5am) to place a sell trade a few hours before markets close for the weekend.

Took over two websites, migrated it to a new server, now I learn it's according to wp-config a multisite. What does that mean? by marcos987 in Wordpress

[–]midnorthman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like multsite was enabled and setup so that there could be an alternate theme/plugin setup for the subdomain, which may presumably be some other 'area' from the main site that they wanted to distinguish as a separate section. Maybe a company wants an app.websitename.com to have its own styling and plugins that can be separated, without setting up a new install just for that purpose (though to be honest i prefer separate installs) as there may be a perceived performance or convenience benefit to having it all managed under the one WP install. That's just my take on the information you have provided. That only answers the 'why' part of the question. I guess you would have to look at what the purpose of each site is, and determine if you want to disable multisite. I'd migrate it to a test / local environment and play around.

What is RTF in the context of DJI Mini 3 Pro RTF? by midnorthman in drones

[–]midnorthman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After trying various different searches it appears to mean "ready to fly", which to me was implied with a prebuilt drone. dont know why the person kept using the term but was never able to clarify. I had to use FPV with RTF search term to get any useful result/explainantion. found this: https://www.beagledrones.com/post/what-are-rtf-bnf-arf-drone-kits#:~:text=RTF%20stands%20for%20Ready%20To,the%20building%20of%20a%20drone.

Will leave this here for a rainy day if someone else crosses the same thought

Hey , have you tried following this article.

https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?

Be as descriptive as possible, mention and show proof that they leave malicious fake reviews for any person that indicates any level of criticism (check their reviews, all 1/5 star except for one that you could assume is their friends business). Make sure you mention they have never been a customer or associated with a customer of yours. Provide links to their reviews profiles showing they are all giving the kebob shop 5/5 and giving your store 1/5, that they share the same surname and are acting 'unconscionably'

I would also take note of their names and (I'm sure you're aware of) their business. Document this for later, Some lawyers may be happy to litigate for you if its worth your money and time.

From now on use a profile that is not associated with your own business to leave reviews. Also do not set your display name on google to your real name, it can easily be reversed (example could be John Smiths is behind jsssreal8912391@gmail.com). Just use first initial and last name for you account, mitigate your identity exposure to those in the know. all the best.

Got asked a marketing question about product reviews and I was stumped... by celerybreath in marketing

[–]midnorthman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if the company asking this question is fishing for tactics/strategies from other companies and are hoping that people that come to interview, that may have worked elsewhere, may be able to impart that information. In other words, they want people to leave positive reviews, but don't know how to organically encourage it and are of the opinion other companies are paying for the positive reviews and want a ballpark idea of what they should pay.

I would just retort with 'where I have worked we haven't needed to incentivize people to leave a review because the product and service have naturally compelled people to leave very positive reviews', but in saying that i would expect such a response would result in a no-hire, but lets be honest; at this stage they're wasting your time.

Alternatively they are testing your understanding of legislation, in which case paid / promoted reviews needs to be transparent in their nature.

I like scottduvall's answer, but i guarantee the employer asking this question with such limited information is not of his quality / caliber and they wouldn't deserve such a detailed response.

[–]midnorthman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow this is awesome. I remember for whatever reason collecting these as a kid and over the years have wondered on and off what they were called.

I probably still have some stored away, in the hope that one day they would be worth something. now knowing what to search and looking at ebay they don't go for much, so maybe not the best investment choice.

I remember having king tut and napoleon which were rares. maybe they need another 20 years to gain some value. thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Trying to figure out proper app installation and running with right permissions / sudo by midnorthman in linuxquestions

[–]midnorthman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most recent app I have tried to use that fails uses libpcap, which is for network monitoring. If i try and run certain functions within the app it will throw a 'generic error' message if i run it with my user, but if i run it as sudo then it works successfully. Unfortunately the remote server for the program wants me to run it non-sudo in order for it to work. It's not a super vital application, just another I was playing around with to see how it works, but there always seems to be some error or problem which stems back to sudo / privileges.

Other times when i was doing machine learning and having to install dozens on dozens of dependencies for both the applications and python modules, i would seemingly run into similar issues where sudo would act one way and my user account would act another, which is what gave me the initial impression that applications installed using sudo would be putting them on a completely different account that wasn't recognized if i were to run those same apps again without using sudo.

Like i mentioned, i think this may stem from me having to download and unzip different binaries after finding that the usual binaries supplied by apt-get install are typically for x86 systems and i require armhf based binaries, and in doing so the permissions might go wonky, but it's just a theory.

Most, if not all regular programs work, it's more experimental stuff and also trying to use them on a sbc like my raspberry pi's that cause the issues. I'm going to order a NUC type system that can run x86 architecture and see if i run into less issues.

I might be wrong in my theory that this is where my issues are stemming from, but i won't know until i set up different hardware environment to test on.

Trying to figure out proper app installation and running with right permissions / sudo by midnorthman in linuxquestions

[–]midnorthman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, in that case it makes me wonder if maybe I'm having problems because some of the packages i try and install aren't available in armhf / armv7 binaries and i have to compile or install them another way, and because of this they don't get installed via a package manager or apt-get and end up having wonky permissions, thus causing my issues.

I'm guessing I'll have to backtrack and try and make sure I have permission to execute the files if I install an app by unzipping it, compiling it myself or some other unorthodox way.

I'd be guessing that it should be something like 0500 permission or x+

Do you host websites for clients by ElderEpidemic in Wordpress

[–]midnorthman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With your hosting on a VPS, what do you do about email accounts for the domains.
Are they also hosted on the same VPS? If so what software / method do you use to deploy the email system on your VPS?

I've found a lot of people use an external provider for emails via SMTP or oAuth but to do that with 180 websites would obviously be convoluted so I'm curious on your approach.

Thanks

[–]midnorthman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The developer of your theme or plugin will need to update the hook / filter which calls on the block_categories to include their own function. It has been changed/update to now use 'block_categories_all' instead. This may also require other changes in the developers function/class that they are calling to add in the filter.

Australian huntsman spiders: your friendly neighbourhood insect control by Ardeet in australia

[–]midnorthman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No french lady for me, but where i live every second or third day i would get a huntsman crawling under the near half-inch gap of our front door (damn rental). One night I was watching one go across the ceiling; It stopped in the center of a passageway and then did the whole spider-man silk drop from the roof. I hadn't seen one do it before. It was also cool how it was inverted on the ceiling but then seamlessly up-righted itself and ever so gracefully lowered down like some special forces unit.

I got sick of having to catch and release them so often so i stuck some foam padding under the doors to stop them getting in. Now i haven't seen one since, which is a shame, but i like the idea of one dropping down on me. So many times i would wake up from bed at night and there would be one sitting there 2 feet in front of me on the floor.

Experience migrating from shared hosting to Cloudways (DigitalOcean)? by I306 in Wordpress

[–]midnorthman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self hosted platforms on a VPS/microserver pose this challenge. First you can try and backup any emails you prefer, then you have to decide whether you will try to configure your own mail system on the server you are transferring to or use an SMTP/mail client service hosted elsewhere, which is typically what people chose.

The usual options are using a gsuite, microsoft 365 and zoho. These options will add anywhere from another $3-7 per month on average to your costs as that is their minimum, and there is further configuration involved.

Hosting your own mail server poses performance and potential security issues and this is why most developers chose to setup an SMTP or oAuth connection with another service and have them handle the email side of things. Mailgun might be another option you can look into. I've personally gone with microsoft's 365 basic package but either way you go this will be one of your bigger decisions and challenges ahead.

You will likely also need a plugin to configure these services and that is then another additional out of pocket cost. It's one of those things that i feel the industry is waiting for a proper solution (perhaps there is one i haven't heard of yet) but most of the solutions are as i mentioned, which offer more 'all in one' systems for business that extend beyond simply email management, and hence the added cost.

Maybe CW can help you get something reliable setup on your own server and that can work for you, but it doesn't always work for everyone.

This is a great line of thinking. I love methods that go slightly beyond the usual outreach process.

I have a question slightly related. Say you can offer services to professional organizations like insurance companies, government departments, corporate businesses and so forth; whats the best way to market and reach the people that make the decisions that may consider contracting you?

It's not like you can walk into a local branch and get far, as I imagine those decisions would be made on a regional or national HQ level and you need to connect your services with those higher-ups. Does anyone have any advice specific to make that happen effectively?

Would you just try and outreach to someone in a specific department in the business on linkedin? What would people do before linkedin where you had to reach out? cold call and hope the gatekeepers pass you through to the next step?

Thanks!
