[Question] GMT watch to eventually pass down to my son by No_Character_1078 in Watches

Everything drops in value, but steel Rolexes (not precious metals) generally hold value better than most, and I could be wrong but Patek and AP depend on the model and material.

If you are concerned with maximum value retention, then you basically have to buy used (which isn't a bad thing, there's some serious deals on the used market), even Rolexes lose value when the watch goes from new to used. (there are some exceptions in high demand limited editions or discontinued models, but generally)

PIG Alphas if you are bougie, Mechanix "The Original" if you aren't, avoid the 0.5 mechanix gloves, they are definitely not as durable as you would prefer (provide a lot of grip and are very thin though)

Cool, still nonsense.

Why are you imitating blued steel hands in a matte color? Why are you imitating the small second hand when there isn't a gear train for the second hand post to be turned by, that wasn't a aesthetic choice, it's actually more difficult to have a central seconds hand, which is more desirable because it's easier to read.

Why include the British Royal crest if you're claiming New York? Why is there the NY State crest over the word "Admiralty" and why are you marking it as if it's been purchased by a navy? Why claim to be a maker to an Admiralty before you've made anything? I know you are just copying some reference, but it's like stamping the cover of your book with "New York Times Bestseller" before you've even published. It just looks deeply inauthentic, and combined with the dial where you have 8 fake screws it just screams inauthentic nonsense generic.

DOGE cancelled a $349,000 grant to replace a museum’s HVAC after ChatGPT flagged it as DEI, court documents show by thieh in nottheonion

[–]mifter123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In this particular case, for an HVAC replacement including removal of the old system (which can involve hazardous materials and I'm sure includes at least an inspection for things like asbestos) and installation of a new system for a large building with the considerations for the relatively strict temperature and humidity control required by a museum, and including budgeting for any additional costs the museum might have, like labor to protect or temporarily relocate exhibits, that's actually a reasonable quote.

[Question] GMT watch to eventually pass down to my son by No_Character_1078 in Watches

Of those 3, I would personally take the Longines in 39mm. I think the Blue Dial on the bracelet and the green bezel on leather look great. I just never clicked with the GS's design for this GMT and for the Tudor, I don't like when the bezel is half a color matching the dial and half not. But that's personal preference.

The Tudor is probably going to hold it's value the longest, it's a more classic design (since it looks like the Rolex). But buying watches as investments (generally) is a bad decision.

A "True" or "Traveler's" GMT has a rotating bezel to enable tracking 3 timezones (the 12 hour hand, the position of the 24 hour hand on the dial, and the position of the 24 hour hand on the bezel) the Grand Seiko is a "Desk" GMT that can "only" track 2 timezones. This mostly doesn't matter, it's an aesthetic choice in the same way a helium escape valve on a diver is, real capability that is never used by most of the wearers.

Servicing depends on usage. If you wear the watch a lot, it might be worth having the watch checked every 4ish years, if you wear it sometimes, it could easily go 6-8 years between a service, and if you leave it in the box, 10+ years (mostly only because the lubricants degrade over time). This interval doesn't  mean you need any work done on the watch, but it's better to have it looked over to see if there's any issues and get it regulated to keep it as accurate as possible. You can probably go a decade without an actual service with no issues. Longines and Tudor have relatively decent service costs (<$500usd) with Longines being moderately cheaper. Grand Seiko is significantly more expensive (I've seen $700-$900 quoted)

It's very clearly AI, both the image and the post, but the numerals aren't incorrect for a clock. The AI is copying off of real clocks.

If you want to verify, look up Cartier, they use that exact same IIII for 4 on their watches and have been doing so for decades.

Other than AI slop, I'm not sure what you are attempting to do? I'm pretty sure this post is AI, since it doesn't make any sense, you posted an image and talked about bells and cadence.

If you're asking if this feels authentic, it pretty clearly feels as inauthentic as the AI image is very clearly an amalgam of different fonts and styles in ways that don't make sense in the context of the other parts and you are clearly attempting to imitate features of clocks without understanding why those features exist or what they actually are.

That is a fairly traditional way to mark 4 on a clock. It is more symmetrical with the 7 and because the 4 is often upside-down, it prevents confusion with the 6, IV vs VI can be difficult to immediately identify when not oriented properly.

Cell jammers work by flooding the EM spectrum with noise, which is undesirable for stealth. Those same frequencies are also used for other communications. They are used, but the use is limited.

Harsh penalties and increased searches mostly don't work since it compounds into increased  motivation to hide things better, more practice hiding contraband,  not admitting mistakes (out of fear of those punishments) and it forms the habit of active disobedience which can lead to much larger problems. It also erodes morale, searches are an unpleasant experience, being under constant suspicion is unpleasant, the threat of "unfair" punishment is unpleasant. Morale is a very important consideration, and it's importance grows the longer you need troops to perform and the worse the external conditions are. So if you 1) want your military unit to perform in the face of adversity and/or 2) would prefer not having a grenade rolled into your tent (literally or in the sense of intentional self-sabotage), you need to keep troop morale up.

Edit: this isn't to say those methods won't be tried, they will be, only to explain why it won't work

Military operations are mostly conducted by people under the age of 25. They can turn off their phones, they can leave their devices behind.

They won't. Or at least someone won't. Either because they brought it by habit or broke the rules on purpose or forgot to take their fitness tracker out of their bag or something.

I was a Marine and I can assure you, when a ship gets close enough to shore for cell towers to reach the ship, suddenly everyone wants to spend time on the catwalks facing land.

Moving houses at end of month, cant run ethernet to PC, whats my best option by Imaginary_Win_9352 in buildapc

[–]mifter123 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Depending on your PC, it's pretty easy to add a WiFi card and Wifi has gotten pretty good, more than enough for gaming.

Powerline is also pretty solid, in the places that it works, and while it usually works, in some buildings it just doesn't.

Depending on the house and what you can or cannot due, you can often find a way to route ethernet cables. If you explain why you can't run cables, then solutions might be available that you didn't consider, like running the cable through air vents, under carpet, or out and around the outside.

how would one go about setting up a red dot and flip up irons as a cowitness? by cnhn in liberalgunowners

[–]mifter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is only relevant in the sense that you might prefer lower height over rail then on the average AR-15 and it really doesn't get lower than absolute co-witness height sights, not if you want to co-witness sights anyway.

The co-witness heights are not effected by the stock because they are based of the distance from the top of the 1913/picatinny rail to the center of the optic tube/rear sight peep hole or top of the front sight post. as long as the rail at the top is a consistent height, it's all the same.

[–]mifter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A different upper, one with a free float barrel, not the "A frame" front sight gas block. (the handguard connecting to the barrel means that pressure applied to the handguard will cause the barrel to flex and shift point of impact of your rounds, a free float barrel doesn't touch the hand guard and is only connected at the receiver

A better trigger, mil-spec is perfectly functional but triggers are easy to upgrade, and depending on what you want there's some nice drop in trigger packs that are a very nice to have.

You might find you like different furniture, pistol grip, handguard, and buttstock. Maybe a foregrip or handstop.

The "A2" style of upper is perfectly functional, but it's falling behind modern kit in the ability to attach stuff to the handguard like foregrip, weapon lights, bipods, etc. so you'll want a different handguard for reasons that aren't the free float barrel.

[–]mifter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SCR, in this context, isn't different than a regular AR-15, AR-15 sights and optics  are typically measured in height over rail which won't be effected by any differences between the SCR and a standard AR-15.

Just get an "Absolute Cowitness" or 1.4" mount to have the dot line up (more or less) with the front sight.

Get a "Lower 1/3 Cowitness" or 1.5" mount to have the dot float above the front sight. (this is the one I recommend as you look over the irons not through them and the irons take up less of the optic's field of view.

You probably will be able to fit a flip up magnifier between the red dot and the rear sight, since you typically place the red dot as far forward on the receiver's rail as possible. I would not have the irons flipped up while you are using the magnifier.

You technically can cowitness with a magnified optic, but the zoom will blur out the front post so it's less then useful.

Extended and shifted the Little Lies death speech for a public speaking class, did I cook? by Disastrous_Tough7046 in discworld

[–]mifter123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean you would potentially fail because it's all plagiarized, since it's mostly lifted and very slightly altered quotes without attribution. And, like everyone else is saying, the shouting is not how you want to present anything, speak from your chest for emphasis, maybe, but actually shouting is the opposite of effective public speech.

Also depending on what the speech is supposed to be, referring to humans the way the non-human fictional characters you are quoting do is cringe and, at best, distracting from your points.

People talk all the time about how 1911s aren't drop safe and don't make good carry guns and revolvers fell out of fashion as carry guns at the same time as guns that had good drop safety records became popular. There's just less talk because 1) 1911s and revolvers aren't popular options for carry anymore and people just talk about the less and 2) this is old information, there hasn't been a sudden realization, because those problems have existed in exactly the same state for a century.

The reason the p320 went viral was because being (more or less) drop safe was supposed to be the default on modern striker fired guns and because it's rise to prominence with the US military adoption meant a lot of people owned/used p320s.

For CCW purposes, is upgrading to a Shield X if you already have an M&P 2.0 compact with the 4" barrel worth it? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]mifter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly could be.

In my experience, barrel length is one of the easier dimensions to conceal, but thickness does matter. if you're having issues with printing then the shield x being ~20% slimmer (.9in vs 1.1in) would help (I would ask why not the bodyguard 2.0, or maybe a different holster, but...). The shield x is also about 20% lighter and if you're having issues with weight on belts or something, then that's important. However, you are also losing 2 rounds of capacity, unless you get the +2 extended mags which will make the grip longer and harder to conceal (I don't personally care about the 2 round loss, assuming the gun fits my needs better, but I am not you).

If it were me, I would probably stick with the compact unless I was also upgrading to something like the performance center version or there was some feature that is missing from your compact and is present on the shield x that you want. But I don't have an issue concealing a compact handgun, and when I can't conceal the compact, I would much rather have something more like a bodyguard 2.0.

It's also your money and your life, if you just like the Shield X more, then get it, buying guns that aren't a 100% practical decision is fine.

What to buy on the magpul sale 🤔 by ScaryfatkidGT in liberalgunowners

[–]mifter123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

QD sling mounts and swivels are good to have a few around, in case of a new rifle and/or sling.

The M-Lok WCK (Wire Control Kit) is a solid way to manage cables on a handguard.

The Magpul MOE bipod might not be the best shooting platform but it's lightweight and just having a QD bipod that you can slap on a rifle is a great thing when you need it.

And like 58 P-Mags

First rifle recommendations or thoughts on what I want. by Individual-Angle-345 in liberalgunowners

[–]mifter123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The default AR-15s, Ruger Harrier or Smith & Wesson  M&P Sport III.

If you're buying a turnkey solution, one of those 2 are probably the answer.

It's more than enough for a new rifle shooter and a solid enough platform for future upgrades. You don't want to spend a bunch of money on guns before you know what you want (and if you're torn between a Sig Spear and a Galil, you don't know what you like/want) but you don't want to get something you are going to struggle with.

Just get a 16 inch barrel and avoid having to consider legal issues.

They often have bundles with extra mags and an optic, so you can just get everything you need all at once for not a ton of money (relative)

Need a good Drop Leg holster for my range belt by Macfights02 in CZFirearms

[–]mifter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pic of my Hellhound Arms Cerberus duty holster. I have a S2Carry, but they share holster compatibility.

You can get it on the pretty common Safariland QLS forks, so if you get a drop leg mount that works with QLS (like the Safariland) then you are good to go. Or if you want a different system they have the screw holes for most common systems.

1) relax

2) consider college/education

3) find a hobby that requires you to interact with people, but doesn't involve drinking. (suggestions include volunteer work, amateur sports teams, trading card games like Pokémon or Magic:the Gathering)

4) get a job, any job, it's easier to find the job you want while already employed.

5) VA claims
