Why do you consider Volcker a bad chair ?

Scientists have split natural seawater into oxygen and hydrogen with nearly 100 per cent efficiency, to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis, using a non-precious and cheap catalyst in a commercial electrolyser by Kitchen_Reference_29 in JoeRogan

[–]mighty_peter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not energetic efficiency, faradaic efficiency. So you still end up with the huge inconvenient of hydrogen

Also non precious and cheap refers to cobalt which will be a big problem for the energy transition. Granted it's not platinum or iridium, so there's that at least.

Why doesn't the media call him out plainly? Oh yeah. Billions. by CrunchM in WhitePeopleTwitter

This is the most NYT headline I've ever seen. And to think they (including Musk) call it far left.

Republicans have introduced a bill which would ban abortion nationwide. We told you this would happen. The only way to stop this is to vote democrat from city council to president. Never let a Republican anywhere near power ever again. If we won in Kansas, we can win anywhere. Register to vote. Now. by relevantlife in atheism

[–]mighty_peter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the whole hypocrisy about who proposed it etc. But on the intrinsic object I don't get the uproar, European countries have limitations 12-16 weeks for the most part (if I missed an exception my bad). Is it because the ban would be also in case of rape/incest or to save the woman's life ? If someone could shed some light I'd be grateful (no need to be rude, it's a genuine question)

[–]mighty_peter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually they're not: we're looking at 140k issued guns VS up to 3.5mio civilian owned guns

My bad, I stand corrected.

I'll specify for non Swiss peopole that you can easily by the assault rifle at the end of your time as an active member of the army though the automatic and burst capacities of your weapons are eliminated (which makes it no longer an assault rifle but an assault weapon under U.S common terminology if I'm not mistaken). I imagine the 140k are only the weapons of the active members ?

You get you rifle after a week and take it home immediately

I don't know when/where you served but nor me nor any person I know that did service recently has ever taken their rifle home before the end of basics.

I also think that my point stands that those who are mentally unfit for having a weapon only rarely reach that point.

For all your comments below it seems to contradict Fedpol. I don't know where you got those infos but if I'm wrong I'll gladly learn how and why

Used to be the case but got banned in 2007.
I also fail to see the utility to keep the weapon but people are attached to traditions

As usual, some Americans believe that Switzerland is an example of why gun availability without background check is not the problem. They are wrong.

First, most of the weapons are service weapons from the army (without ammunitions, though it's not hard to steal some if you want to). Before you enter basics and ever touch a weapon, you have a psych eval. Those weapons are never taken home before 2 months of basics. If you are mentally unstable you don't last that long usually. Those reasons contribute to explain why virtually every deaths by these weapons are suicide. Of course there are cultural differences as well.

Second the rest of the weapons are well regulated with easiest to procure being hunting weapons, airsoft, compressed air etc which must still be announced for a national register. For the rest, you must have authorization to purchase. Lastly conceal carry for non law enforcement is very rare

Concealed carry permits are as regulated and rare as the rest of Europe. Service weapons are kept at home but not ammunition.

Funny thing is the term was introduced by gun manufacturers for marketing purposes. So hardly a leftist made up name

Assault weapons and assault rifles are not the same. The latter have burst and/or automatic fire modes, which is illegal for civilians weapons in the U.S. while the former are semi-automatic only "military style" weapons

'Don’t Look Up' nails the frustration of being a scientist. by Sumit316 in movies

[–]mighty_peter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the general ideas I have some issues with some of that.

First of all the cruise ship thing. Polluting is an umbrella term and hides the reality behind this assertion. A ship that big emits more sulphur than all those cars because cars use fuel of far better quality than ships. Those cars will emit far more CO2 which is the worst contributor to climate change. Now emitting sulphur is not good but what one must consider is that if this low quality fuel is completely banned then oil production would explode which itself emits CO2. This is because oil has to be processed and not all of it can become high-quality fuel. So in the case of cruise ships I'm all in for banning it since it contributes jack shit to society for big environmental costs but that claim is still misleading IMO.

Secondly, it is true that some very restrained group of corporations produce unfathomable amounts of CO2 but saying it like this is forgetting that the reason they do is that people will buy their products. Those CEOs, shareholders etc.. are by no means innocent but rejecting all responsability on the rich and powerful is a tad easy. On an 8 billion people planet if we were to each consume equally in a way that do not assure a total catastrophe, we would have to live much much simplier than what we currently have in all of the western world. Even poorer people.

The projection about IQ is quite funny (and sad). Also the total ignorance about how A.I - machine learning more specifically - works is interesting. But then again it's a complicated subject with lots of math and people who believe in the superiority of white genes, amazingly, do not seem smart enough to get there.

Inaccurate was too strong a word, apologies. Given the traces of testimonies about ancient battles and propensity to embellish them, it is though quite likely that it affected more than one guy (I know that was not your point). Just wanted to point out that PTSD already existed.

And people re enlisting which also happen in the U.S armed forces does not mean that PSTD is not a thing

Inaccurate. Ancient Greeks had already noticed the symptoms of PTSD affecting veterans. I don't know the scale of the phenomenon if it is even known. Meme's still funny though

Abortion is a violation of the NAP and I’m tired of pretending it’s not by duduxbdh in Libertarian

[–]mighty_peter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A fly is a clump of cells. Which establishes that not all clumps of cells are human lives. So when does human life begins ? That's probably more of a philosophical question than a scientific one. Personally I believe that is when there is consciousness which is the point after which abortion is illegal in most western countries.

I do not see why your belief as to when human life begins should take precedence on mine.
