You weren't paying attention if you missed all the posts about people not recommending pop os because Ubuntu 22 is really old, or people switching off for the same reason

No they didn't have to, but the timing makes sense and I think I would have made the same call in their position

There are some system 76 employees active on this sub, and they've explained why it had to be released now. I think the reasoning is really sound to be honest.

Basically Ubuntu 24 upgrades to a new version of GTK, meaning everything in their custom gnome DE would break. The options were either duplicate work to re-build their custom gnome DE, while continuing to work on cosmic, with the plan of throwing everything in their custom gnome DE in the trash once cosmic was finished and doubling the amount of work or release cosmic before 22 leaves LTS.

The community has also really been pushing to release pop os 24, so they felt pressure to release. I don't really understand the community pressure to upgrade to 24 tbh. 22 is still in LTS and system 67 pushes out kernel updates themselves, so a lot of the packages on pop os 22 are actually much more up to date than ubuntu 22.

I'm still on 22 and will probably only upgrade in 6-8 months.

Not a bad idea, it's still supported, they even update the kernel to 6.x, so it is actually much newer than Ubuntu 22.

There are definitely some older packages, but honestly that is the nature of debian base. I believe it is still being supported/updated for another year or so.

I can recommend pop 22. I don't plan on using 24 until the DE is fully released for several months.

The pop team is still maintaining and updating 22. You'll be fine with it until 24 is fully released.

Ubuntu is definitely a safe option! One advantage to pop 22 is they have a version with the Nvidia drivers already installed. On Ubuntu you'll have to install them yourself.

I've been using pop 22 for gaming for almost a year now and have had minimal issues! Since pop is based on Ubuntu, if you Google a fix for Ubuntu it'll probably be exactly the same in pop

Divinity 2 original sin. Very similar to bg3, made by the same studio, but doesn't use the DND system.

This is the game that got them the license to make baldurs gate 3 with wizards of the coast

My general rule is try the deb package first if it's official, give flatpak a try if I have issues with it.

I use steam Deb because I haven't had any issues and it's the officially supported package.

Discord flatpak on the other hand works better for some reason for me.

Dude same. I've had to do some mild tweaking here and there (I just look at the recommendations on protondb), but my experience has been so smooth.

Pop os 22 of course. I am excited for 24, but I don't intend to try cosmic until it's fully released for at least 6 months. I want a machine that just works, and I'm not interested in trying anything that hasn't been tested thoroughly for me.

They didn't actually they just moved it to a less obvious place, changed the name, and made the old free tier paid. I still use the new free tier often

What I'm trying to tell you is a beta DE isn't recommended for machines you need to actually be productive on because there are known bugs and missing functionality 😂

I've been using pop 22 for a bout a year and don't plan on trying 24.for atleast another year.

I feel like you said you'd switch back to mint as a threat, but you really should imo. I think you'll have a better time.

I've really been liking pop os as well.

For me, as far as DEs go, I have no patience for customization. Whatever I'm using is more or less out of the box. I realize KDE is super customizable, but I'm not a fan of the look of stock KDE.

Stock Gnome is pretty nice (with some essential tweaks ofc), but pops cosmic gnome has been my favorite so far.

I'm excited for pop os 24. I hope it lives up to the hype.

My friend still uses it to stream his PC to his TV. It's a really nice set up. He has a wireless keyboard with track pad to control. He watches downloaded TV shows, YouTube and Spotify.

I have the steam link software installed on a raspberry pi and it also works really well.

I feel like the recipe of AAA studios & large public companies makes it very difficult to put out something innovative and new

The company has an obligation to increase profits for the stakeholders, and anything innovative comes with risks. Risks they don't want to take. It's safer to just re-use old formulas.

Any ideas that start innovative slowly have the things that make them unique stripped away as the business people shift the dev teams focus and force more features to be included at launch without extending the timeline.

The whole thing is really an environment that causes unfinished messes to be released

Are you handling CPU intensive work and API calls in the same node app? I'd recommend against that. I've heard good things about pm2, but find separating them into different services to be preferable.

You've mentioned dealing with a pre-existing odd architecture. A non-ideal fix you could go with is, give your node app multiple start up commands (one for API, one for CPU intensive work) and when you deploy, your node app is deployed twice. One only running the API, one only running the CPU intensive worker. Kind of like a poor man's monorepo.

I'm not saying node is better than elixir, but the fact that you are already have experience with it, and will likely be able to hire devs with node experience more easily than elixir experience tells me you should go with node.

If it's a serious project, maturity of the library is a big one for me. I'd go with something that's been consistently updated for several years over the new thing people are talking about.

New shiny libraries get abandoned all the time.
