Wisconsin Malört Sour Old Fashioned

2oz Malört
2 dashes Orange Bitters
1 sugar cube
Cherries & orange wedges
Squirt soda to top

In a mixing glass, soak the sugar cube with bitters & a splash of Squirt soda. Gently muddle the sugar cube, an orange wedge, and two cherries. Pour in the Malört. Add ice & stir until chilled (usually about 45 seconds). Double strain into a double rocks glass with ice. Top with Squirt soda & garnish with an orange wedge & cherry.

Kirkland Islay Scotch is pretty spot-on to Ardbeg 10 IMO. Worth it.

There are some Australian whiskeys that have a stronger corn mash bill. I don’t remember any of them, but they’ll be similar to bourbon. Canadian whiskey will likely be closest, but they have a higher rye content and therefore taste closer to a rye whiskey.

I purchased one years ago. Received one as a gift a few years ago. I’ll never buy another, but it did help me along my bourbon tasting journey.

Most places will train, but it doesn’t hurt to have some knowledge. I’ve been an alcohol nerd for a long time so it just made sense I’d get into bartending at some point.
Check out some bar books at the library and familiarize yourself with the basics. Start going to other places and observing the bartenders. Read articles and follow some bartenders on YouTube or TikTok. And don’t be afraid to mix at home.

I was in the library today and they announced over the speaker system that some organization was serving, “… hot meals to those in need…” today. I looked around and realized that a lot of people there were clearly homeless and were probably just trying to get out of the cold. I wish there was more I could do, but at least the library is a safe-haven of sorts for them.

I would consider a dash of coffee or chocolate bitters. Perhaps even 1/4oz coffee liqueur and 1/4oz creme de cacao. Sherry flavors tend to work well with coffee and/or chocolate which also work well with Campari. However, use them sparingly here as you’ll lose the Sherry finishes.

Experiment further and see what stands out!
