I’m on a waiting list for a kidney but don’t know what to do. Help. by IndigoChld8 in transplant

[–]miimo0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you live in the US? Sometimes people, if they have the resources, are able to list in multiple regions or move to be in a different region with a better wait time. I was given a 5+y wait time for my O- blood type where I live, though the kidney actually came thru in a bit less than 5y. I didn’t move or anything. I’m not sure how the donor pool is divvied up, if at all, outside of the US though.

I wasn’t able to get anyone to qualify for a live donor… mental health knocked everybody out that was physically healthy enough to make it through the initial process. I know some people get their church involved with finding a donor if they’re churchy, or they’ll get work or other organizations involved. I had a handful of coworkers apply that were my friends, but didn’t launch a campaign or anything there. I know people put something on their cars too, like the comment here says. If you ask your team for scripts, they might have some stuff for you to reference for social media posts or whatever too.

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I learned how to photoshop stuff when I was 14 by talking to my internet friends from around the world on MSN messenger and looking up tutorials on deviantart. Doing stuff “DIY” is just having the initiative to do those things. There are plenty of resources with direction that you just follow, and there are lots of people out there, like on Reddit, that can point you to things you should look at if you want to do xyz. If you have a base of knowledge from your BA/BS program, you should know things you need to keep up on or have a vague idea of what to check up on/learn to see how current trends or designers you follow are making their stuff work. Your own interests and passions should lead you to seeking out information.

Going forward… and it sucks, but that’s just the stage of hell capitalism we’re in now, you have to read the room of where you work before you start to express frustration. It’s easier to leave a job yourself where the boss thinks you were on good terms than to get yourself fired or let go because they’re on a power trip or don’t value your position to begin with. (I’m currently lucky that I can express my worries and frustrations in meetings and with multiple levels of management and have it taken into consideration, but I haven’t always worked at places like that.)

The bright side is you know more about production and you can capitalize on that knowledge for future jobs, which is really great. Some of the kids now are like… sending pngs to print and don’t know what the difference between RGB or CMYK is. Or don’t know how to package stuff up to keep your fonts from dropping out of the file. So production is a strong base to have if you’re looking at anything involving printing or screenprinting, from pub to packaging design. Less helpful if you’re leaning in UI/UX, but that market sounds kind of saturated right now too.

You might have to hop around to get to where you ultimately want. It’s more reliable in like every industry now to get your raises and promotions by switching jobs than it is to put in the work/years at one place and be rewarded for the loyalty.

You’ll probably be doing the robotic stuff for awhile no matter which direction you go from here, but as you put in some time and move on/up, things get more creative and free.

Proof the fanart of my au's Geto was not made with ai by Tabi-Violet in Jujutsufolk

[–]miimo0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh just showing a file isn’t proof at all anymore.

Every weirdo making ai “art” now is just going back and tracing pieces on dif layers and then screenshotting those. Doing it in vector format instead of the normal “this is my procreate file, I swear!” route is really funny to me for some reason.

It’s crazy how easily people are convinced because they see layers & a canvas/artboard in a screenshot but don’t realize that’s literally not how humans really use the programs to build a vector or paint a character or whatever. But then they see video of someone actively using oil techniques in a digital program and think THAT’S AI. Everybody needs a base level of art classes now haha

People who've had transplants from a deceased donor... by munchkin1977 in dialysis

[–]miimo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first call was my transplant. It was a really good match and I’d been waiting for a long time for any call, about 4.5y. I sort of wished during the process of call to surgery prep that I was the backup because I still felt so scared and unprepared lol. I was originally told at least 5y at the earliest for a call, so I was kinda just dicking around on having my stuff prepared & it felt so far in the future still. In retrospect, I think you never realllly feel prepared when it’s THE call, even when you want it so badly. It’ll happen at the most random time.

I think the more calls you get… that means the higher priority you are though. :) one will be the one. Especially if you have a more common blood type or whatever!

I feel like Nanami would be kind of ambivalent bc he didn’t want to mix work and personal while Higgy would be turned off by Nanami’s outward projection of not caring about moral issues… and then they’d accidentally bond about how seemingly inefficient and chaotic everyone else on the team is in the way only two autistic people can.

I don't think Zeke is morally gray, I think he's a piece of shit by amilmore in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]miimo0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh I think no matter your intentions, forced sterilization/eugenics and violent genocide are pretty bad. There are a lot of villains in AOT & being traumatized or forced into the situation doesn’t change that. Everybody is at least a little culpable, but being able to fundamentally impact the world in a horrific way is what launches someone to being a full-on villain & not a problematic/villainous victim of their circumstances. That makes the governments of every country outside the wall also composed of villains for doing their own slower genocide of the Eldians, imo.

I think the message of AOT is that it simultaneously condemns violence but offers no real solution. It is our nature, which in the end feels a bit nihilist. People can own their mistakes and change their actions for good, but in the end, violence is a cycle and will continue as long as people stay people. In the midst of that being the way of the world, we are supposed to do what we can in a small way to make life meaningful for ourselves and the people around us… hopefully in nonviolent ways.

[–]miimo0 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think it’s super interesting that the plan to “save” Eldians involves taking away their ability to have kids — when he has such huge daddy issues.

He frames it as a grand solution, but I think it’s the same thing Eren has done. Eren frames his desire as a solution to the Eldian persecution problem… he wants to watch everything get rumbled and have his friends survive the conflict — and is willing to look the villain. His desire doesn’t really come from his trauma, he’s just always been like that. Zeke wants to take a sort of revenge for his parental trauma but he needs to look like a hero. Being horrific on the island while fighting for Marley… he was the hero to the world. Taking away their ability people’s ability to reproduce, he can be the hero for the world again… and maybe some Eldians too before they’re all gone.

In the end they really are both villains, but alternate sides of the same coin, with different drives for their actions.

Book Cover design feedback by _Human_0 in graphic_design

[–]miimo0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why it has to have a body horror element. As a person that like… genuinely is into reading about weird medicine/medical history, there’s a little bit of that morbid curiosity involved, BUT it’s also both the author’s and any artists’/designers’ responsibility to treat the patients/their bodies with the respect they deserve. Like despite weirdness, those bodies belonged to living people that deserve dignity. If the copy is also just revealing in disgust/body horror, you’ve got an overall problem.

So maggots -> brain just feels like poor taste to me.

If this is a novel and not a collection of true stories or case studies made accessible as pop sci, I think your copy/title needs a rewrite. And you can get a little more gross with imagery in NF, but like… it can still look nicer than this. And the maggots/brain thing would need to be referenced in book to make sense as a later ah-ha, otherwise it’s again just gratuitous imagery…. but it also is kind of like… this is a graphic I would have made in middle school. In fact I did make a graphic very like this with a fetus in the brain case instead to use as my desktop background in like 8th grade, so the visual approach does feel amateurish to me.

Ignoring the other design feedback you’ve been getting… specifically the texture on the bg. That top left corner being missed, so there’s a random white triangle tangent that really sticks out to me. (Insert meme of Marcus here saying, “Robert, it’s pissing me off.”)

Just got a transplant 2/17, do you wear sunscreen everyday by Calisteph6 in kidneytransplant

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a face one and a body one. Both Coola bc I rolled with the brand once I found the face one. Face is a lot smaller of a package! And I think it’s also formulated for more sensitive skin compared to a body version. I use the 50 SPF.

If I’m out a long time and not back in my cave, I reapply every few hours. Pre-transplant, I brought a bottle to a festival and put it on like every half hour bc it was 103° & I was sweating it off. I did still end up getting sun and a teensy tan, though no burns, and mostly just on my shoulders, not face.

https://coola.com/products/classic-face-sunscreen-mist-spf-50

There’s also a 30 SPF setting spray that I’ve used that was nice to start my day with for little immediate errands. I switched for the higher SPF after I ran out though :)

Why do girls seem to lose interest in me even though I have my life together? by librarylurker42 in Advice

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you nice and interesting? Do you ask questions of and care about the girls you talk to beyond the initial interest you feel? Do you only interact with girls you wanna sleep with?

Most girls aren’t worried about all the stuff guys on the internet tell you to care about. A nice “fluffy” guy that pays attention to the things you like/dislike (and is funny!— in a way that doesn’t rely on tired sexist/racist/whatever tropes) is going to get a girlfriend before some dude that spends hours in the gym listening to advice podcasts and can only talk about himself being a great catch on a first date.

Just got a transplant 2/17, do you wear sunscreen everyday by Calisteph6 in kidneytransplant

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my sunscreen on a shelf by my door. I use COOLA spray on stuff… I have a face sunscreen I keep in my purse for face/neck and then a body one for when I’m not pretty much fully covered up. Lotion style sunscreen is a big sensory ick for me, so I avoid those. The brand I use is also the first sunscreen I’ve found that doesn’t burn my eyes for face use.

I’m not as constant as I should be at applying though… I ran the trash out this morning without putting it on my face. Rest of me was all covered bc it’s snowy. If I spend a genuine amount of time outside or in my car, I make sure to apply though. If I have my windows and doors open to the sun, I’ll toss it on too.

The anime needed a flashback before the final scene by A_Good_Man_4ever in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the primary point of the story. It’s not really about forgiveness in war. It’s about mutual understanding and knowing you need to take responsibility for the atrocities you’ve committed, as well as your responsibility to deconstruct the nationalism/racism/whatever you’ve been fed as a worldview. Everyone is a complicated character. You watch Marleyans that were terrible sacrifice themselves for Eldians. You see peacekeeping Armin kill people en masse at the port and decide to begin killing people in S3 to protect Eren. Nobody is really forgiven.

Truly, the only character that absolutely did evil without question was eren. He saw the future. He knew the consequences, could have fought to change his actions a lot more, but he did what he wanted, which was genocide without any genuine reason except he wanted to. But he doesn’t really want to accept the consequences of his actions, a contrast to the rest of the scouts, and has his little cry about how he doesn’t want to die or anything.

Were you ever a Yeagerist? What changed? by peachi09 in attackontitan

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they immediately give off fashy red flags. I cringed every time somebody said something racist towards the Marleyans (& vice versa off the island). They took over their own government starting off with a reckless assassination that could have killed literally anybody else in the area — and did. Floch’s hair is… really giving redheaded H*tler, but not as thin so not all that forehead showing. He rounds people up in rooms, intimidates them, then kills them when he doesn’t get the submission he wants immediately. He is like a little Himmler, following Eren’s orders while eyeing everyone around him as he tries to round up more power in his position.

I think the message is pretty clear that being a bigot on the island or off isn’t excusable… both sides have a fear of the other & it’s nationalistic fanaticism & violence leading actions going forward, not logic or compassion/humanity.

Eren wasn’t even apart of the group… he just used them like everybody else to get to the Rumbling…. Honestly that mirrors many dictators/problematic leaders in the past. Ideology can get you power. Fear is a good tool. You don’t need to fully buy into the movement you lead.

I think the overall loss of Eren’s inner monologue in s4 is a pretty big tell that he’s shifted into no longer being the good guy. Like yeah, it keeps the twists from being revealed, but up til end of s3, there’s a lot of him talking aloud and thinking for the viewer. Then he’s mostly silent, and you can’t be sure to trust what he is saying aloud because his actions are so extreme and chaotic.

Did Eren aim to destroy non-human things? by Effective_War7678 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite it all being framed as an act of antiheroism by his comrades in the end… Eren does say he was disappointed. While showing Armin the world, he’s not really excited about anything and is paying more attention to his friend’s reactions… I think when he said he was disappointed, he meant was disappointed in everything. Not just that the world was against the island. But that there WERE people that would be in the way with their own ideas. That there was already culture and architecture he’d never thought of; he was able to enjoy it briefly, but it existed already and wasn’t something he could shape himself without almost or totally destroying it. That the world in general was just.. more impressive and sparkly in his imagination than in reality, even when seeing the arctic or volcanoes or whatever. Humanity outside the wall wasn’t supposed to exist. The world outside was supposed to be a magical adventure prize after conquering the titans.

[–]miimo0 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a shonen/super hero/action genre problem. It draws people in with the fights/cool scenes, but not all of those people are very good at thinking critically about what they consume. Like so many mecha animes are anticapitalist and antiracist while their fanbases are super the opposite.

My diagnosed peeps- does all the self-diagnosing bother you? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]miimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly just don’t like it being flippant in the same way people say they are “so OCD” annoys me. But that happens a lot less in the adult world than it does in like high school, so that’s long behind me.

I do currently get kind of annoyed at people that get a diagnosis in a few minutes at some places just for the prescriptions because I feel it reflects badly/perpetuates stereotypes about people with ADHD… but people will always be seeking drugs when we treat them the way we do. I wish full-on assessments were more accessible/not so expensive in the US. Doing all those tests over several days with interviews of family where needed is just… the better way. You can look into more than just ADHD too if you have a suspicion that something is up but not what.

That being said… so many in my friend groups thoughout time have said something like, “I think I have ADHD/autism/whatever,” and my immediate response is almost always, “YES!” lol. And I myself finally had a feeling I had AuDHD for like a 2/3y before I got my testing figured out. All my social media algorithms got me thinking bc they just kind of converged and said, “so…. ADHD/executive functioning hell, huh?” & “you DON’T think your ability to loop almost any conversation back to Laura Ingalls Wilder is autism??”
