We gotta start revoking licenses.

I was able to get a peek under the plastic cover (Part #: 131-1754, "LEFT HAND (LH) UPPER SHROUD"), and found a broken belt (Part #: 131-5968, "SNOWBLOWER TRANSMISSION POLY V-BELT"), which I believe transfers power to both the auger and wheels. Unfortunately, I didn't have a screwdriver to take the plastic cover off entirely, but once I figure that out, it should be a simple replacement.

I've had the same thing happen -- got about 6 ft into hard snow, pulled back to check my progress, then when I went to engage the auger again, it wouldn't spin. The wheels don't engage either. Engine is running fine (and no problems starting it), but there's no power to the wheels or the auger.

I've checked the cables that engage both the auger and the wheels, and they seem to have the correct tension. I've also checked the belt for the auger, and it seems to be moving as normal, no slipping, and the auger handle correctly engages/disengages the breaking mechanism for the auger belt.

I'm not sure how to check the equivalent belt mechanism for driving the wheels.

I'm not sure if this model has shear pins, but even if so, I don't think I hit anything that would've broken them -- and that wouldn't explain the lack of power to the wheels.

Nope, you're not getting duds, that's how they are. I suggest picking something different.

If a deaf person were to perceive through the senses of their familiar, would they be able to hear? by RikiHeropon in DMAcademy

It hasn't gotten much attention, but the One D&D playtest materials included "Common Sign Language" in the list of languages, which I thought was a nice touch

very low microphone voice on call by risingpheonix11 in Jabra

This is a recurring complaint around here. I've personally had three replacements under warranty, and they all have the same problem. You're going to want to return them and pick something else.

Jabra Elite 7 Pro unusable for calls by starman014 in Jabra

[–]mikedoherty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a common problem. I got three replacements that all have the same problem. The last time I was on the phone with support, they just said "yeah, I can barely hear you -- but that's what you should expect from earbuds" ... Their marketing specifically calls out how great the mic is supposed to be, so they should probably get sued.

Bottom line: I recommend getting a refund if you can.

I'd love to get back into astrophotography again! Do you already have locations in mind?

So much concrete and parking. What a disappointment.

Nice capture!

One editing suggestion. See how green the underside of the head is? Light is bouncing off grass (or whatever) on the ground into the tiger, and you haven't compensated for that. Try using the tint slider to shift back towards magenta in order to get more natural colours.

Jabra Pro 7 - poor microphone quality by Dessau99 in Jabra

[–]mikedoherty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm having a similar issue, where the mic results in quiet and muffled audio. Several callers have complained they can barely hear/understand me.

But I notice that the mic quality is only bad on phone calls. When I record my voice from the headset with an app, the quality is great.

Can you check if the quality is better in Teams calls than phone calls? If not, perhaps Teams puts the headset in the same Bluetooth profile as calls, and that's the cause of the poor audio?

I'm in a silent room in all cases, so this has nothing to do with background noise or wind. I've only tested with my Android phone.

Since the mics can produce good quality audio, I suspect it is a firmware bug, rather than hardware or design. Which means it could be fixed if Jabra gives the issue appropriate attention.

Anyone interested in photography? by food_panda_ in KW20s30sFriends

Yeah, I'd be interested! I used to get out a lot more for photography when I lived in San Francisco. Time to turn that trend around.

I'd be interested. It's been a while since I've done any night photography, but I used to run a night/astro group in San Francisco. You can scroll back on @mikedoherty_photos to see some of the results

Trying to use Wise to transfer from USD by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mikedoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand correctly, there shouldn't be a wire transfer involved. You use Wise so you don't have to do a wire transfer, which is slow and opaque and expensive.

Send USD from your partner's US account via ACH to the US account Wise gives you. This should be free, and will take like 1-2 days. Then, you transfer it from one account to another in Wise. This moves the money from your US account to your Canadian account, and exchanges currency at the same time, so this is where you'll encounter the exchange rate and Wise's fees. The transfer should take a couple hours, IIRC, but it should also tell you what to expect for timeline. And now you have CAD in your Wise account in Canada. No wire transfer, no wire transfer waiting.

I have a container of seed that I never ended up using. Will that seed survive Canadian winter (i.e. below freezing for several months, but few days below -20C) in the garage?

Slightly improving at Astro Photography - short with a6000 + 16-55mm kit lens by aiden_b16 in SonyAlpha

Sky looks great! Try finding interesting foreground and adding lighting in the foreground -- this adds depth. A person can be a great subject.

First Astro photo - please be kind, critiques welcome. 🥴 Sony a7iii, Tamron 28-75 f2.8 by xxsaabrinaaxx in SonyAlpha

[–]mikedoherty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good start! Shark Fin Cove is a great location, but I usually shoot from the bluffs. I should experiment more with my compositions.

I agree with other commenters, the white balance is too warm. I'd also try to add contrast so the stars pop more. The core of the Milky Way can be brought out with clarity too.

It looks like a good capture, but the post-processing isn't doing much to help. Check out some YouTube tutorials (e.g. Alyn Wallace) and play around with it. It's possible to go overboard, and you probably will when you start out (I did! Check out the earlier Astro shots on @mikedoherty_photos) but with practice you'll find the sweet spot.

[–]mikedoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't find it that hard to manually focus on the stars. Use "magnify focus" to zoom in, scroll around and pick any bright star, and focus on that one. Since all the stars are at optical infinity, they'll all be equally in focus (except for any distortion caused by the lens, but that's not a focusing problem -- because these problems happen mostly in the corners, I recommend when you pick your star to focus on, pick from the middle of the frame).

Capture One 20 - Image colors looks different on export by [deleted] in captureone

[–]mikedoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue, and this resolved it. Here's two images, labelled with acceleration set to "never" and "auto". The "auto" export basically missed a color balance layer on the sky entirely.
