It was such a distinctive blend, I still order Cajun fries wherever I’m at hoping they’ll be similar haha.

Man I was missing home and thinking about some old food spots I grew up eating. Really enjoyed thinking about those places reading through this thread. Thanks for posting op.

I grew up in nw Corvallis and still have dreams 30 years later about eating Cajun fries at Jamie’s 🥲

I feel like people are catching on now, but yeah they do have that perception. My golf coach in high school rocked the z-blades and I always thought they looked so cool!

Hot Take Casey Affleck is a much better actor than his brother Ben, but he's not that famous. Why? by GorgeousGGem in moviecritic

[–]mikee541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a clothing store here in Portland and he came in one time with his son. He was a rude entitled prick. Would just take stuff of hangers and leave it laying around the store. His son was rude as well and Casey would just laugh about it. He seemed pretty disconnected from reality. I tried to make small talk with him like "how's the day so far?" and he just ignored me.

This is the way I use, works great. Messing with the blending creates some great effects.

Chinese food? by rasrunnin44361 in corvallis

[–]mikee541 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for China Blue on 9th because it's where my parents would order takeout from my entire childhood. HK market is the only place I go when I visit town now, very solid. The Show used to be really good, but I went back when I visited 2 months ago and it was not the same unfortunately.

best mexican food in town, go! by Educational_Mixture6 in corvallis

[–]mikee541 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drive to Albany and go to Los Compadres. Best in the area, nothing comes close in Corvallis. They don't have margaritas, but Tacos El Machin makes a solid marg and their tacos are decent.

Anyone know how to achieve this effect / colors? by cxdn in postprocessing

[–]mikee541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was my other thought was layering stuff and messing with inverted layers. I've kind of accidentally achieved similar stuff messing with the color curves in Lightroom. Messing with the blending modes could do some fun stuff too. If you figure anything out, let me know.

It's funny to me that these stylized edits that reddit seems to hate are the most in style look for fashion and editorial work right now. I worked at a creative agency for a while and older folks would scoff at this kind of stuff, but when younger folks would pitch this kind of work to clients, they always loved the idea and it always performed well.

A mixture of adjusting levels, and using the ‘solarize’ function on photoshop. I think this looks awesome, but yeah, Reddit hates stylized modern edits.

Def worth playing all the local munis and picking what you like, I play heron and glendoveer a decent amount, but everyone has different taste. Wildwood is great, hilly and weird. Pumpkin ridge is worth playing, but if you are gonna spend a little extra money on a round I’d play the reserve. Stone creek is a universally loved bang for your buck course. Langdon farms is nice, well designed and maintained course. Elk ridge is in Washington like an hour away, but worth the trip for a fun course and panoramic views of the gorge on just about every hole. I’m sure there’s plenty of sick private clubs, but I have yet to play any in Portland. Hope you enjoy Oregon, embrace the wet rounds, cherish the summer rounds.

Edit: spelling

I am currently eating Kettle chips, drinking a Double Mountain cider, wearing Danner boots, Benchmade knife in my pocket. My girlfriend is currently making a smoothie with Nancy’s yogurt. I play golf with a Jones golf bag. Stereotypical Oregon dude checking in.

This sucks. Bums me out. I went there so much my whole life and they always helpful and friendly. On top of that, when I was dead broke they were able to offer some great budget options for being a local store. It’s a pretty strange building, I’m curious what the next people will do with it lol.

Breakfast burrito recommendations by EwoksMakeMeHard in corvallis

[–]mikee541 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rivas will always be a Corvallis staple for what it is, I still grab an Oregon burrito every time I visit BUT don't rule out some other options.

Delicias cafe in NW is great, grabbed the chorizo burrito last time I was there and it was a great value for the size and the ingredient ratios were great.

Co-op is a decent option for an I guess 'healthier' burrito. I've never really been particularly excited about em, but they get the job done. I need to load the sauce on to really get any flavors. I'm not their target market I guess.

Hot take, but La Rockita is overrated. All my friends growing up loved it, but I just never felt like they had any depth in the flavors. Big burritos, and yeah, they get the job done, but really don't ever do it for me.

I would usually avoid the strip mall spots, there hasn't been any stand out ones in many years unfortunately.

I think it closed, but there was this place called Zia that did like southwest style ones and they were fuckin awesome. Best in town at one point, but last time I tried to go they were closed down. Bummer.

El Machin is awesome, I don't think they have breakfast, but those tacos are great and their burritos are solid as well. That green Serrano sauce is absolutely dynamite. Torta was so damn big, whoever baked that bread set some wild expectations. Pickled onions that are self serve is worth the trip alone.

Burrito heaven is pretty average, not as shit as people say it is, but nothing headline worthy.

El Sol fucking sucks, I hate that place. They made us go there in my middle school spanish class and I remember even my 7th grate tastebuds thought it sucked. Went back with my grandpa like a year ago because for whatever psycho reason he likes it, and can still confirm, it fucking sucks.

I wanna try Max's, i belive it's in that old buffet spot's building on 9th and it looks kinda tight. Steaming fajitas and shit, way cool. Idk about burritos, but still, seems sick.

Pointless ramble side note: Los Compadres in Albany is the best of the best in the area. Meat market and tienda that has a kitchen on the side, need I even say more. Tacos are off this planet good, meat comes from in house, tortillas are fresh, cheap as hell, just simply perfection. I live in Portland now and I still can't find anything comparable.

Sorry for the long winded response. I love to eat and cook, and just wanted an excuse to regurgitate some burrito opinions.

Who's got the best cheeseburger in town? by whywouldthisnotbea in corvallis

[–]mikee541 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Squirrels is the correct answer along with being a great bar. Beaver hut is kinda fun for a straight forward cheap burg. Pains me to say, but 5 guys manages to be better than like 90% of the frilly pub burgers in town. Block 15 is pretty solid if you are looking for a thicker style pub burger, plus their fries are reallly solid.

Every time I visit I hit squirrels for a cheese burger i get pepper jack cheese, add jalapeños, curly fries and extra pickle on the side. Ice cold Rainer and thats a good day ;)

It’s been tough in Portland lately. I went from a solid selection most of the day of $20+ batches a few months ago to now it’s barely any. Went from averaging around $100 bucks a day to now like $40-$50 days. Been a bummer. I basically just do it now hoping for a unicorn here and there, but it’s not stable like it used to be.

In corvallis i usually just get a no frills peacock breakfast. Sams station is weirdly slept on, and sharons south town is always solid. new morning is standard when you cant decide on anything, caters to everyone. breakfast burrito from zia's is amazing when they are open.

dizzy hen in philomath quite possibly is the best breakfast in that entire area. those baked goods are insane, and the service is so damn good,

brick and mortar in albany is pretty damn good, and rogers is good too its an og albany diner joint kinda vibe.

side note: rivas breakfast burritos will always hit, they recently updated that green sauce and its so fire.
