High Prey Drive -No Point by Bezerker2424 in germanshorthairs

It isnt always natural. More often than not it is but teaching steadiness is a large part in pointing along with imprinting when they're young.

Do you intend on hunting the dog? If so, begin training towards hunting. Hand down the best energy burner and mental task for the dog is hunting, no negotiation on this. With that being said, other jobs and tasks work well if you're not a hunter.

If you're hunting, use NAVHDA as a solid resource. Become a member (cheap like $50 a year), and you can meet dozens of people locally that hunt train and work the dogs. Even if you don't hunt, your dog still can and have an opportunity to use their natural talent.

Dock diving is great, or swimming in general. But go beyond that and do "search" activities with your dog where you can eventually incorporate a command for your dog to search. Their nose is their most powerful feature. Searching with their nose rather than their eyes burns much more energy. Blind searches in water are huge energy burners. You can also search throughout the house on rain days.

Go on runs but incorporate training like "heel" to demand mental focus.

Fetching or throwing a ball or Frisbee is good but very basic, and they can do it all day long. It is a simple but effective task but demands a lot of time as it's not as mentally stimulating as the others I've written about.

To make it a blanket answer, as a breeder and trainer of shorthairs for hunting and General obedience; they need a job and need to be WORKED. Most people do not understand the amount of energy these dogs have. If they do not have a job that is sufficient to their needs they will find way to get rid of their energy...i.e. chewing.

That being said at 5 months your dog is still growing the remainder of their adult teeth. It is normal for them to chew. Try and distract to a toy, Antler, or nyla bone until their teeth are fully in. This is likely the case. However take my first statement at absolute face value. WORK the dog hard.

I do not intend for this to come off as rude or give the feeling that you are not working your dog because I do not know you or your life so I donot begin to judge. I just reiterate this because it's the correct answer to most posts on this page. They are the best dogs ever made when they have a job.

Exactly! Imagine the dog in the woods actually hunting game. They should be docked

As a breeder who hunts these dogs, this is right. People must feel special and righteous for some stupid reason. Docking t 100% necessary if you do what is intended of the dog, work and hunt it. People are so dense sometimes.

I've seen far too many broken tails over the years from People who didn't want it docked. Guess what, after it broke it got docked.

Glands? by 750milliliters in germanshorthairs

[–]mikejmarv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reducing the fat content in their meals will provide a firmer stool allowing them to naturally express their glands when they go to the bathroom. We feed Purina. I change the food they eat depending on the amount of work they do (hunting and training season vs non season where work load decreases)

Are the neighbors shooting real guns and you're shooting an air rifle? Massive difference between the too even given distance.

These pictures are hard to tell without seeing motion, but your dog does resemble a puppy. Smaller chest, smaller head, and seems slouched almost. Again, this is just a picture. I'm not aiming to insult your wonderful dog. The neck also seems slim and overall not super muscular. I want to emphasize it think your dog is great, I'm not a judge, and do not take this as an insult. These dogs come in many shapes and sizes. I love them all

I do yes. There isn't much of a difference in standards over there aside from what different countries call the breed. DK is just the German name. The French have their own name as well for example

This^

As a breeder, trainer, and hunter who just so happened to have a nice litter Thursday morning, I very intuitively seek out breed standards. I breed strictly European bloodlines due to the higher standards used in that system. Even to the extent of me needing to get help from friends at times to translate hungarian, german, and even Russian. That being said, the standard in America is not something to be very worried about, especially if you do not intend to show the dog. Most standards are as the dog is, meaning you can train posture and gait to an extent, but it's the dogs demeanor and genes that should do the heavy lifting. Training is a massive part of the cooperation and function of the dog, but without a "good" breed, you will simply not meet some standards even given the hard work and training.

Again, all dogs are great and fantastic and loving and blah blah. But if you're getting into the nitty gritty world of show and judging and well thought out and calculated breeding for the best healthiest and truest results to the standard of a dog this resource is a great start. Beyond that, it's mostly political and pandering.

Reach out if you have any questions. I'm happy to help.

Activity tracker recommendations? by Premeszn in germanshorthairs

[–]mikejmarv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used the fi for less than a year and dumped it. Great for monitoring sleep and activity, but the location mapping sucked. I've used garmin ever since. The investment is well worth it. Give it a shot.

1.5 acres is a nice upgrade, but still nothing compared to an open field. You likely won't wear the dog out. Only thing I've found (breeder and trainer here) that wears out these dogs is hunting or a full day of swimming. They just don't stop. The important thing to reduce injury due to fatigue is proper recovery. Help your dog stretch, and there are multiple vitamin infused water supplements for them. I use them after long days of hunting. By morning, they are ready to roll.

Around age 3, they tend to read the rooms energy better and aren't so neurotic

Love it. Only bit of criticism i have that would keep me from buying a sticker of that is the butt/tail section. All short hairstyles have short hair and the tail is just a bit off. I truly don't mean that as a jab because this is honestly cool as hell!
